Well, the new set is out -- I post here because this is the first DDM 2.0 set, the first "4th ed" set, and is getting some attention as a result.

Here are my overall thoughts:

1. It's not THAT different from what we'd been seeing -- which is good. The new figures basically fit in with the old, so from a purely aesthetic standpoint, the change doesn't mean that much.

2. The first set is very well painted -- sure, there are a few issues, but after sets like War Drums, which were severely underpainted, I'm happy to see that, overall, these minis look good. They did a good job getting several paint apps on these, it's one of the better sets, I think. Also, on the whole, I like the poses and sculpts. Sure, the new hook horror is silly, but it's very detailed. The tomb guardian (four armed skeleton) is one fo the best skeletons they've ever done. The Ascendant Hellsword, the Vampire Vizier, the gargoyle, the new beholder... they really are very well done. Far more impressive, IMHO, than fans are giving them credit for, I think. Looking past the 2.0 business, it's on the whole a well executed set.

3. They are re-issuing a LOT of monster types -- this set gives us a TON of figures we "already had" in the prior edition. If this set is any indication, I'd say future sets will probably be light on the monsters we haven't seen yet, and a little more heavy on 4.0 versions of what we have.

4. I don't know if it's because 4.0/DDM 2.0 is going to try to be more like "instant gratification" or if it will more vigorously court fan interest or if they're simply worried about fans fleeing the DDM game, but it's amazing to me how many iconic monsters are in this set. THREE dragons (four if you count the hydra), a beholder, a mind flayer... The first set had nothing, and even "Dragoneye" was a little disappointing on the dragon front. And we waited FOREVER for a beholder (dagnabit!). This first set is like pure sugar rush compared to the agonizing, piecemeal distribution of stuff like this before. I wonder if the next set will return to the slow-n-steady approach or will just be more candy. It's going to be a Huge set, which could mean some pretty great stuff is coming....

Anyhoo, I'm really happy with this set.

I haven't touched this set at all yet, seen the posters and had mixed thoughts on the new "look" of some of the things, and haven't even seen that many Common/Uncommon lots i wanted to buy.

DoD2, in some ways really made me mad, not so much in the actual Minis, or the new game, but in what it did to the SWM, and it's timing. Dropping the week after LotF, and then prempting it's Release tourney with a pre-release for this DoD2 (along with wotc's basic avodiance of telling the SWM community anything about the plans) has it so i haven't bought any. I Still am working on the SWM set, and honestly won't even look at these till after the release, er i mean two-week "post" release tourney for SWM, and have spent my $ on something i like better. So won't touch this set till next month.

Just not a fan of the Tiefling (or Drow for that matter)

I mean, the more time I spend with the figures, the more curious comparisons I discover.

The new "death knight," for example, is clearly inferior to the "dread guard" figure from a few sets back -- poorer detail, poorer paint, smaller (!)

The new Hook Horror, however, while posed in a ridiculous way, actually boasts greater detail and a more elaborate paint job -- the two-tone look is bad, but even on the face, it just has more detail and looks better. A shame the total package looks worse, but in terms of detail and paint, they really TRIED to do something better here.

The new gargoyle is clearly better than the first, and probably at least as good as the second.

The new beholder is fine, I think - some people may prefer "fleshy" to "dragon scale-y" but that's pretty subjective. In terms of detail, paint, color choice -- I really don't see anything WRONG with it per se.

Other figures like the Vampire Vizier and the warrior wight look great, I think. As does the hydra.

The only figure that looks unambiguously TERRIBLE next to its predecessor, IMHO, is the grick. The thing is just so FLAT, so two-dimensional, it just looks absurd. The mind flayer is a close second, just for lack of detail, gloppy paint, and an attempt to do something dynamic with his tentacles that just looks stupid.

I think another figure I'd like to pick up will be the bulette. It's an old-time beastie, and the new figure looks very nice. The Huge version can be an advanced bulette.

And I do like the serpentine hydra. After all, the name means "water snake."

I admit i like the new Bullete, i want one or four for my SW games, they look like nice critters. I am down to just 2 of the darn LotF minis, and depending on what happens at the release tourney this weekend i may pick up the started (don't really want all the figs in the start, i just like that dwarf for my PC), or hope to get the Uncommon Dwarven Warlord. Almost none of the Rares in this set are things i am interested in.
The Young Silver is nice, Young Red (if i got it wouldn't sell it), Hydra, Beholder, and the Balhannoth are the only rares i would actually want.

Even some of the Uncommons, and Commons i am very eh on,
I LIKE the Bulette, the Bugbear, eh, Cleric of Pelor one would be nice, Death Jump spider, kind of cool, the Defiant Rake, and Dire Wolf, i'd like 1 of each, Dwarf Shield Madian, yeah like at least 1, Elf ARch, could use 1 or two of, Same with Everfrost Ranger, I REALLY like the Giant Centipede, could use about 6 of those, Gargoyle, Gnoll a couple would be ok.
Howling Hag, (well 3 might be nice for a coven), Human Ftr, Hook Horror, Ice Archon, Maga brute, iron defender, Kobold archer, Shadow Hunter Bat, Shade Knigt , Shadow Demon, Warforged Inflitrator, Spectral Panther.
So 24 out of 30, less than half the set is what i am intersted in. Just don't like the look of some of them. The pictures of that Trog... Ugh.

L, I have to ask;
Do they look better in person than on the website?
I just took a look at the "gallery" and IMO they look atrocious!
(Troglodyte Bonecrusher= Harbinger quality! Ick!)
The paint looks extra shiny- is it just the lighting?
Did they use some sort of gloss paint?

I usually buy 2 cases, but I'm seriously hesitant with this set.
Please, calm my fears!

the trog is horrible.i hope they improve it drastically with the next set. vrock is a 1005 improvment over the first1. shade knight coul make a good proxy for a spectre or wraith. death knght is a little short butnot all knights have to be 6.5 feet tall. i little paint and he will be a gem. overall most of the new mins are nice but i havent completed the set yet
wicked cool

BLAST -- I gotta say, some of the commons are pretty awful. The trog, the orc raider, the goblin picador, the grick -- these may be some of the worst figures DDM has EVER released, in any set. The spectral magelord is, IMHO, a new low for rare figs -- awkwardly painted, really a wasted opportunity.

But some others are fantastic -- Ascendant Hellsword, Bullette, Eye of Flame, Dwarf Warlord, Fen Hydra, Gargoyle, Howling Hag, Rakshasa, Shade Knight, Skeletal Tomb Guardian, Vampire Vizier, and all three large dragons (green, red, silver). And I kinda like the hook horror, goofy pose aside. I like the bugbear, the Baphomet champion, the defiant rake, the drows, the vampire spawn.

There's some good stuff here, but as always, there's so much room for personal preference -- if the website photos are scaring you... well, you might want to pass.
