OK, not that I have time to DO anything with this information these days, but....

the new Chasm set has me really excited about the caverns, and I'm looking at my old Hirst Arts cavern accessories. I'm starting to think the HA cavern floor mold would be REALLY useful, since I could not only make my own floors to set up these DF accessories, but I could make my own chasms.... it just seems neat.

The thing is, $29 for the basic mold seems a fair price, but to be able to "refine" and fine-tune your floors you need the variety that you get with the cavern floor accessory mold -- and that makes the purchase closer to $60. That's a significant jump, and it turns a cheap lark into an investment, one I'd rather avoid.

So -- if you ONLY have the floor mold, can you make floors that have the same 2"x2" footprint that DF floors have? Or is it off by a 1/2" and I'd need the smaller floor elements to produce precisely the right floor? Is it possible to snap the tiles in half, along the cracks, to make something closer to the right size? Would that look wrong, if I didn't use the accessory mold?

Just wondering what's possible...

If you are refering to the base floors (ie Dung, MBS, Sci-Fi) yeah you can do some of the 2x2.
The 281 floor mold, has 1 2x2 as a bit, 2 1x2, and 4 1x1's. I haven't made any 2x2 in the Cavern style from HA, i tend to go with either 4x4 like DF, or 2x4 for some filler bits for the 6x6 and 10x10's i did... :)

I don't see a reason you could not break the tiles per say, there are 4 or 5 that could break into some items that are closer to the 282 mold.

If you are intersted might be able to do something similar to what i did with the Sci-Fi with these...

Have a look at my Ice Cavern. There I have 6 different 4*4 inch floor plates which I made (mainly) out of the floor mold. I I say mainly then because a few from the accesory mold might have crept in - not out of neccesity but rather out of availability. If I recall right then you need to cast the mold approx. 1 2/3 times to get a 4*4 inch floor plate.

Having said this - if you want to make irregular floors, then I highly recommend to take the accesory mold as well. Again - have a look at the ice set - the 4*4 chasm/cracked floor piece was done using regular floor plates on the outside and using irregular ones for the crack/chasm.

Also somewhere at the end of the thread I did add some irregular pieces similar to the floor pieces Stefan has done. Like two different half corners - which actually was the cracked floor piece broken in two pieces and some tiny alterations done.

Also if you want to build up height by stacking pieces - for example the stone stairs I made - then I would also recommend the accesory.

So have a look and decide yourself. And that my pieces are in clear resin doesn't mean you can't cast them in plaster instead. Actually the original pieces have been plaster and since then I did a few in black resin - but still need some dry brush and finalizing them.
