I swear, it seems like just when I'm prepared to write off GW entirely and never buy another product, they do something kinda interesting. Once again they've released a plastic set that really takes advantage of the sprue, giving the buyer tons of flexibility in what actually to build. In these case, I'm talking about the new Chaos Spawn set.

It's a set that enables you to make two "chaos spawn," which basically means two demon monster types. What's cool about it is that it comes with an assortment of spikes, blades, tentacles, eyes, teeth, arms, and heads, so that you can make tons and tons of different sorts of monsters, or combine things to make something wholly new and funky. I don't think I've ever seen a kit that allows you to make your own monster before.

With the set, you can basically make two sorts of thing -- you can make cave-dwelling (or lower-dungeon dwelling) monstrosities like things covering with tentacles and mouths that look vaguely like Gibbering Mouthers or Beholders with legs, or you can make extra-planar abomination things, residents for the DoE. I was so happy with the set I picked up an extra, and that gave me even MORE flexibility, since some pieces come one-per-set and now I had two (specific example: giant lobster-claw arm, fun if you only have one, but even COOLER if you have two) For the person who prefers his demons classic and straight-up, you can even make a somewhat traditional demon (one of the body-types is hooved, and there is a basic demon horned-head included, and some basic arms, etc).

As always with GW, the price is a bit steep -- but not too bad. It's $25 for a two-pack, which compared to the $17 two-pack of wizards doesn't seem that bad. After all, you get two very large monsters, even Reaper would probably charge $10 a piece for these days. And you get a ton of extra pieces left over when you're done, for converting other figs. And you get a lot of creative options about what to build. For all that, $12 a pop isn't that bad, in my eyes. Plus you can always find a place that offers a discount on GW -- 20% seems to be standard in my area.

I'll post pics when I get a chance, I've done up a few of these guys. But anyone who likes making giant monsters, anyone who wants funky things lurking in the darkness of a dungeon or leaping around in the DoE, I advise you to check it out.

There's a set coming from GW that will include 10 Chaos Space Marines and 10 new Chaos Spawn for $110. That would certainly provide all the fiddly bits you'd ever need.

Sure! Sorry about that.

Normally GW showcases the ways these things can be assembled and painted with sets of galleries on the site, but this time they didn't. There was an issue of White Dwarf that showed them off (and convinced me to get them) but nothing on the site.

Still, this page gives a taste of what you get...

EDIT: Spoke too soon!

Shows you the sprue, with everything on it, and ways to assemble some spawn...

I put my order in with Neal at The Warstore for the Chaos Tide of Spawn set, so I'll be swimming in chaos bits!

Wow... I have to admit, I'm jealous. I doubt I'd have much use for the marines, but that many spawn....

I keep coming up with more ideas for things I could do, color combos I would want to use....

I love converting minis, and the Chaos Spawn sprue looks to have amazing potential. Plus, the spawn themselves are way cool.

I agree. The only thing I have against the set is that it's a little less open-ended than it seems at first. There are essentially three types of "thing" you can use on these guys -- spikes, tentacles, and blades. There are just enough to use all of them in one figure, which means you won't have any leftover tentacles if you use tentacles, etc. I suppose one could always mix-n-match (design something with two tentacles, three blades, and four spikes), but most of the designs I've seen don't do that, and I wonder if it would work.

Of course, you could always leave some off altogether, the body types are designed to work pretty well even if you just leave open sores rather than plugging appendages on...

Altogether a really great funky aberration sprue. Great for the DoE, just exactly the sort of beasties that look like they belong there...

I know I won't make all ten with the same theme, so I'll have plenty of everything. A while back, I picked up extras of the Chaos Mutation sprue, and the Spiky Bitz sprue. Those and the Zombie sprue are always good for conversions and basing decoration.

Yeah, that's the chief advantage of getting 10. I should have gotten that deal, since I ended up getting 3 sets anyway. I got a small discount at my FLGS, but even so -- I could have gotten some extra....

The only really creative stuff I did was:

1. I used just about every chain I have (from a 40K chaos vehicle accessory sprue, from WH Beastmen figures, from Flagellants, from a Mordheim sprue possibly, from the Zombie sprue) and placed some on one particular beastie (I posted a pic of him in the Cool Photos thread, but you can only see the two chains on his chest, not the bunch that are shooting, Hellraiser-style, from the holes in his back....

2. I used extra tentacles and put them on Tyranid Genestealers in place of arms and made sort of mini-Spawn. I also used a few Spawn heads to shake things up. My favorite conversion used a zombie head as well, so that I have a horribly wretched guy with giant tentacle arms that end in scything blades, and a mournful, eyes-turned-up human face on this narsty Genestealer body. Painted it fleshy colors with lots of brown and red to suggest wounds, pus, blood, etc. One of the more unfortunate things someone could encounter - not sure if I'd use it as a direct threat to PCs, or just a kind of dire warning or way of establishing atmosphere....
