Several people have mentioned "e-tools" for 4e that might be a draw for them...

Don't forget - that will be available on a monthly fee-based web-site ONLY. As well, each 4e book will come with a special "code" that you can plug into the fee-based web-site to unlock extra (essential?) content and errata. Dungeon and Dragon will also be available through this site, though I imagine for an extra monthly fee? The YouTube video of the GenCon 4e presentation said they would be publishing Dragon/Dungeon article on the fee-based web-site every 3 days, then collect them into a monthly "e-zine"....They also said the would be continuing the OGL and the SRD and that some publishers would get access to it pre-release of 4e.

I will certainly take a look a 4e, but most likely simply adopt on my own any changes I like, while still playing 3,5 and using the huge amount of stuff that I have created and is already out there for 3.5

I'm with you Harneloot - I hate the idea of monthly on-line subsciptions. Heck I refuse to use pay TV for the same reason and I woudn't get the utility to justify this sort of scheme.

Thay said some of the digital copntenet could go into some mind boggling directions in the future so I will be very interested where it could end up.

All the Online stuff is the biggest detraction to this i have so far.

E-tools Blows, it becomes unweildy after you get to many books in it, try advancing a monster or making a decent level NPC, finding the feats is a pain, and with the way its done it is almost useless. I was making some Kobolds last week, that were the elite problem solvers in this massive underground kobold city (over 5K kobolds who were lucky enough to be on an island where there are few adventureres so have had thousands of years to flurish and build up a massive society). And i wanted the Ftrs and warriors in the group to have Swarmfighting, i new kind of what it did and that i wanted it, but after freaking paying for both E-tools all the darn add books in print and e-tools, the stupid program didnt' tell me what the darn feat DID. I ended up having to wait till in game, and asking one of the players if he had the book with it on him so i could read it. For something bougth and paid i think it BLOWS that they don't actually tell you what the feats, etc do.

The computer files, accesories so far have all been sub par, the MM stuff isn't That bad, i can get the decent stats for a Beholder, etc, but there are some major flaws in calculating Saves, etc if you advance a monster, i find i have to do a decent bit of touch up on the things that get out putted.

I look at the online move and think this will blow, what if like this past week the webpage is down when i need it for my game? will i have to connect to the WotC page to use it, i don't like running from a lap top, PC etc... The "online content" is what is turning me off.

Well, in all fairness I think the website was down due to the huge traffic this announcement generated. Everyone has down time, but I think it will be pretty minimal.

The way I see it is that I will buy the 4th ed core books on the hope that it is what 3.0 and 3.5 always wanted to grow up and be, but I refuse to buy any other suppliments that are not oh high quality. Lots of the 3.0 and 3.5 suppliments had nothing in them I wanted. Not in the least, and I will not buy just to buy. And I will never rebuy setting material. FR is FR, and I won't rebuy to see Elminsters stats updated to 4.0, or any such thing.

Some of it was traffic due to the announcement, but my complaint was that the thursday before the announcment when there was no whisper yet, and on the lead up to the announcement they had a stupid clock counting down. That is what annoyed me, if i was PAYING for it and i couldn't get to it i'd be livid. ( i do call the Cable company to complain that i want a discount on my bill when service goes out). I don't like the idea of paying for something that is most likely going to be down when i really need to use it, or am really leary of what i'm going to be getting so far none of the electronic products really do what i as a GM want.

ill wait until it comes out before passing judgement. ive ben collecting mins for a long time and mostly for the collecting part. skirmish game is fun and half the time is solo skirmish anyway. my gamers wont care if i plop down a new wotc troll or a substitute. they are not that picky. i do like the tabletop computer idea as a way to help out a player who say broke his leg and cant maek it for th next couple of weeks. great way too keep them involved.

We have been trying the computer thing in our game, one of the PC's has to be away due to work for a month.

While i admit we have jurry rigged stuff, we have decent tech in our group, (over 4/6 of the group is in IT), unless you build for such a purpose it will fall short, i don't want to upgrade my game area into High tech, it is one of the things i do to get away from that stuff.

I can possibly see something along the lines that a DM (or other player) at the game uses a laptop conected to the one the PC us on at Other location, and he gets to move his there etc, but ugh it is just going to be so annoying, it over time might be a workable way but i haven't seen computers and table top meld into a good combo.
Every time i have tried it some thing goes bad. I spend to much on the compter, you get technical issues, etc. While i admit i am far above the "simple graph paper and pen" most of us here are with DF and other 3D terrain elements, from sccenery, terrain, to minis and i would like for this upgrade to live up to what i want no one program has to this day, they are all missing something or don't do something the way i want. i really cant see D&D 4e making this happen.

I'll buy the core books and give it a try. Me and my gaming group have made a 'pact' that we will all just buy the core books and play it pure. No purchases of the following hundreds of splat books that will follow and will (in my humble opinion) slowly upset game balance and uneccesarily increase complexity.

Been down that road with 3.5. (I must own 25+ books for 3.5). With rules, there comes a point where new books actually spoil what you already have. Each new game becomes a case of the DM having to make an extensive list of which books/feats/spells/classes etc are allowed/not allowed and upsetting some of the group.

System does need tidying up and I look forward to a new edition with an open mind. If it's not significantly better than 3.5, I guess we will stick with 3.5.

I'll pick up the 4E core books, and will see how it plays. If I like it better than 3.5, I'll make the transition. If not, I'll stick to 3.5 with my own house rule variants.b

I'll be curious to see 4.0 There is no law that says I have to play it. If there are some good and useful "suggestions" in it I will see how they fit into my own homegrown campaign. I'm mostly still a first edition DM with a mixture of various 2nd edition and 3rd edition elements thrown in.

Let's not forget that D&D at it's core is really what we all decide to make of it. It's genius is that it leaves the spaces for us to fill in with our own imaginations. It should be a springboard. the new 4.0 is just another diving board, your choice wether or not to use it or else to stay with the one you already enjoy.

I suppose I would rather see them coming out with new ideas which I suppose is inevitable rather than an opposite effect which might have been D&D just going out of print all together. Bottom line is, Nobody can take my own campaign away from me. Whatever edition you decide to play, it simply up to your group of players to play as you see fit.

I hope there are some kool illustrations. I am still a fan of the original art work. I doubt it will ever be equaled in scope imagination and design but still hold out hope that some kool things will be presented. There are many good artist out there waiting to be discovered.
