I guess I'll have to accept that I like what GW is doing with their Empire reboot. And this time I'm talking about something that is not only cool, but cheap!

The new Flagellants are out, and this boxed set is actually a great price -- $22 for ten figures.

But what really made me want to bring it to the attention of DF collectors, particularly those with the MBS and the upcoming Tavern set.... this is a great set for townsfolk and accessories.

It's not a perfect townsfolk set, of course, not like what Reaper's been doing. But it does allow one to make some colorful characters who fit in with the "township" approach -- these guys are in rags, and chains, and they look great as the wretched underclass of a city, perfect for hanging around the corners of an inn or bursting through the door of a tavern, causing trouble. Now, admittedly, they'd make more sense on the streets than in the taverns, but it's possible to make streets by placing dungeon elements outside the MBS elements, so there you are.

The set allows for two fantasy archetypes: the town cryer, and the prisoner. There are books and scrolls and bells and torches for the former, and chains and iron masks and even stocks (!) (though officially it's a yoke) for the latter. There's also a blindfolded face, perfect for a blind beggar.

To get a sense of the possibilities for these guys, check out the various models GW shows off here:

nemesis.us.games-workshop.com/hobby/modeling/flagellant/default.htm

There is so much here that I managed to put together ten unique models and only ONCE did I use any weapons -- and that was because I wanted one to have some maces, not because I had no choice. The rest are all more NPC types -- three different types of prisoner, three different types of town cryer, some beggars, and a few renegade wizards for fun. Granted, for people who don't like to model, you won't get as much use out of these if you aren't willing to play around a bit -- I had a leftover potion vial and a leftover book from my wizard stuff, so two of my flagellants got those -- and I repositioned a hand to have one guy holding a scroll -- and it takes thinking to figure out how best to use all the many lengths of chain they provide -- but still, there's a lot of potential here.

But even if you aren't crazy about escaped prisoners and cryers and so forth -- there are a TON of cool accessories here, well worth $10 in themselves. There are four books, there are (I believe) four unrolled scrolls, there are two keys, two hourglasses, two nooses, four (I believe) bells on ropes, many lengths of chain, four arms holding torches -- just lots of stuff that would be great in any DF environment, or used to spice up any number of figures. And of course there are spears, maces, flails, and so on.

I have to say, I was wary at first, I have never been too crazy about the Empire stuff from GW, including witch hunters and flagellants, but this set may be one of the best, not to say the best BARGAINS, GW has ever done. For $22 you get ten figures and an assortment of fantastic accessories. Even Reaper's Townsfolk don't provide as much value -- plus, you get a lot of freedom about how you assemble these guys.

I'll be posting pics, and I'm sure at least some of these guys will be making regular appearances in my MBS displays in the future, so you'll all probably get sick of seeing them. But I'd advise anyone who wants ragged NPCs for the MBS stuff to take a good long look at this set.

Yeah, the new flagellants look great. I just picked up a set of 20, which will give me lots of bits for conversions.

Some point down the road I need to get the plastic Warhammer giant. The accessories that come with that are great.

I'm also thinking of the Bretonnian men-at-arms for use as town militia. They also have neat accessories.

Yeah -- I had some good accessories from the wizards, but I also had a ton of stuff left over from my Bretonnians, so I had some things like lanterns etc. for my flagellants.

I've said it often, but it bears repeating: GW's plastic sets are often a darn good deal. Lots of room for customizing and individualizing, and usually a cheap per-mini price. And as they move more in the direction of including tons of accessories, some of their sets are a lot like getting 10-15 Reaper figs in one fell swoop -- you can make almost all the models unique RPG-looking types with personalities rather than having identical generic grunts. There are limits, of course, and even the best GW mini still has the distinctive WH "style" which you either like or you don't.

I'd never give up my Reaper minis, just like I'd never give up my WOTC stuff. But I'm consistently impressed with what GW can do, how once in awhile they actually don't just release overpriced, useless-for-RPG-fans stuff...

Day-um!

You guys could ALMOST convert me to buying some GW stuff.
If they keep this up, it might happen.
