I will not say anything really about the upcoming Rackham fantasy plastic until it actually arrives. But considering the detail work and paint quality of the AT-43 range I can really say that I'm quite looking forward to the game, especially since the rules have been published. One of the reasons I'm captivated by AT-43 are the rules, and the upcoming Ragnarok rules have a lot in common with the SF game.

There really is only one little problem, though... The AT-43 bases are larger than 1 inch...

I think you might be coming down just a bit hard on these new Reaper miniatures. Are they wonderful? Not really. The skeletons could use an ink wash and then they would work. But from the following perspective I think they work just fine: I have played numerous games with dice representing creatures, and many many times with unpainted metal figures sometimes representing what they are and sometimes and proxies for something else. If every miniature on my gaming table were painted to that Reaper standard, I woudl be a happy guy. Of course, PC miniatures and the BBEGs can still have high quality and hand painted, but having some acceptably painted non-random miniatures sure does help out the look of table for a guy show does not have a tremendous amount of time to spend on the hobby. Now my table can look much better and leave me more time to paint the most important miniatures, or prepare next week's adventure. So are they they "be all end all"? No, but nothing is.

Bottom line:

I'll be happy to pick up some of these and give them a shot.

Rakham is just to expensive for anyone who isn't interested in playing the War Game. I've looked at the AT-43, but at $30-40 for 1 big figure, or for humanoids $30 for 6, and i recently saw a "hero" for $15, 1 human figure for $15, What the... just WAY to expensive.

As for the Reaper, i am completly underwelmed by the grand total of 9 miniatures in the line... just 9 different minis? Only 1 of which i am at all interested in, just wow on lack of selection...

There are better alternatives to those dreadful Reaper plastics:

Better sculpts, better quality materials (ie. not bendy plastic), better quality paint jobs. Around $3 each rather than $2 for the Reaper, but much better value if you want to quickly populate your tabletop with Orcs and Skellies.

I agree, the DF stuff is far superior. Though it helps that DF lowered the price -- they were $5 each originally, the cheapest combo available was a $15 three-pack. You've already heard my rants about $15 startup costs. And while I think the figs themselves are far superior to WOTC's offerings, $15 for 3 vs. $15 for 8 is a tough call. And back when DF began this line, the WOTC stuff wasn't out yet, I believe. When it did start, it was like $12 for 10 (for the very first set) and then $12 for 8. It was a pretty cheap way to get minis.

I have also heard that the Reaper figs will be "action figure plastic," which should make them a lot less bendy than the WOTC figs. Hopefully they won't be so brittle that they become fragile, but it'll be nice if the skeletons aren't always leaning so far over they appear about to collapse....

My $.02 worth.

L,

What you need for your casual collecter is a FLGS that caters to the casual collector. My FLGS themselves will charge a "sitting fee" to play on weekends. This sitting fee is a nominal $3 charge. They keep the $1 adn with the $2 they put it in a kitty and at the end of the tourney they buy however many packs they can at their cost. The winner can choose 1 rare or 2 uncommons, or 4 commons. Second place chooses next teh left overs and so forth and so on until the figures are gone. Anything not choosen goes on sale at a very reasonable $.50 common, $3 uncommon, $8 rare. By the time teh next set comes out then they have quite a few left overs adn what they do is sell them in sets of 5, 10, or 20 for whatever they come up with. Usually $10 for a random pile that they just reach in and get out fo the box. They also will buy back figures from players albeit for low cost .25 common, .50 uncommon, $2 rares. Rarely will you have to sell any back though because almost every sat. or sun there is at least 20 folks playing. The tourney is normally a bring your band or random 2 pak band tourney. Over teh course of the 3 or 4 months it takes WOTC to produce the next set the FLGS will take teh $1 that they have been collecting extra and purchase enough figures to create a whole set with 1 rare per rare, 2 uncommons per uncommon, and 3-4 commons per common and raffle that off when the new set comes out. I am sure they are makeing money all around but with so many folks there on a regular basis there is always someone to trade with. The other item is it is nice to get your anme on the board. They have a gimmick where if you won the last tourney you get your name on the board and at the start of the next tourney you get to sit in the recliner instead of a steel fold out chair and you get to hold the "king's sceptor" I personally have had my name on the wall only 2 times in teh last 1-2 years. Oh well. Right now there is Charlie, a 17 year old local high school student. He has been on the wall for 8 weeks straight in the random pak tourney. It is fun to try to topple him off. As for the reaper minis I am really dissappointed. I was hoping for several colors in each sculpt so although I am buying a troll or orc I have a chance to get several different paint scemas. Not so. I will stick to the wotc plasticrack.

The minis were exactly what I expected after seeing Reaper leap into the plastic mini market haphazardly. No surprises for me.

I love my dwarven forge orc miniatures, but they resin is far too fragile. action figure plastic sounds dandy to me.

This line would have been great if for instance the orcs had 8 different color schemes or something along the line of that. otherwise as a DM I will most likely keep my monies with DF and DDM with the occasional reaper metal for a main boss that I will paint up.

Holy @#)&% !!

Those Reaper Legendary Encounters are anything BUT "Legendary" ... unless you factor in the legendary disappointment people, myself included, feel over this crap-tacular entrance into the pre-painted miniatures arena. Jeesh, they should have left the paint off and sold them as single piece, molded color game pieces like you get in Fantasy Flight Game's DESCENT game.

How underwhelming. How almost ... offensive ... that Reaper actually thinks these are markettable, let alone good quality. Yeah, the "non-blind, see-what-you're-buying" concept is a valid one ... but I don't want to "see" these poor quality things or spend my money on them. I'll stick to the after market DDM singles sellers online and on Ebay.

What a disappointment given how we've seen the pre-painteds evolve since early Mage Knight. Hey, even those MK figures improved over time but this first attempt to enter a growing race hasn't even left the gate. And, unfortunately, any subsequent releases will be met with even stronger skepticism.

Given Reaper's impressive catalog, they could have done so much more ...

Can anyone say Edsel ??

Wow-as I was reading this thread, I thought, maybe these guys are being a little hard on Reaper. When I was still into painting mini's I loved the Reaper-after seeing the prepainted stuff, you guys are right. Pretty disappoiting. I will say this in there defense though.

Harbinger-the first WotC pack of minis were not overly impressive-sure there were some cool rares, but for the most part, the painting and the sculpting were uninmagintive. As time went on though, they minis got much better-let's hope Reaper's does the same.
