First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone who entered the DOE contest AND Jeff and Stefan for making such a GREAT call in awarding multiple winners!

That being said, I do have a question for recent contestants (and to DF as well) regarding future contests. (fyi: I ask this as a recent spectator only.)

Did you find spectator comments helpful (and/or appreciated) during the contest?

Being uncertain, I refrained from posting comments during this initial contest. That being said I wouldn't mind possibly commenting on future enties though, so long as I knew everyone was okay with it.

I tried to stay out of reading stuff untill after i posted mine, i didn't want to be overly influeunced by what others wrote or posted for entries. After i did i enjoyed reading what others said but kept my thoughts to myself untill it was over.

I really enjoyed the feedback. I have had DF stuff for ages, but never really spent more than minimal amount of time getting a few key rooms set up for encounters (or to convey a difficult area).

I was thrilled at the contest, as it forced me to set aside time to actually set up some stuff. On top of that people spent time to look and critique the sets ups. One of the comments on mine was about color. It's something I hadn't thought about much, but makes a huge difference in appearance, themes, and for the contest, visual presentation. In that respect it will be helpful for future entries.

Ghenghis is right about the influences though. I tried not to be influenced by previous comments or sets ups, but there were so many in these forums that are just astounding, I'm sure they creep in.

As a side, after seeing how excited I was in just participating in the contest, I got approval from the wife for a HUGH setup in the dining room. I'm going to be added surface are to our dining room table with some extra saw horses. She's even volunteered to photograph it (sooo much better than I).

I actually have an idea, of how we may solve some of the influnce ideas that i got as i was thinking about this.
A seperate thread perhaps for comments on the set ups.

Have a thread for the entries, and a seperate Comments thread (with a link to vice versa in each so you can get between them easy).
I got to admit i was a bit pleased with the edits that Mr. Martin did in the current contest thread, where all off the random comments about dates and time jumpers were largely purged. A seperate thread where people can ramble a bit more could be really cool, and not stiffle people. The seperate threads could make it so people could avoid getting influences in both directions.

Unless most people feel otherwise we will probably keep the posting format as is: Posting whenever is convenient during the contest time for all to see.
The real point of the "contest" is really to stimulate ideas on what one can do with the various Sets. Since there are so many creative and ingenius "builders" out there, we surmised that by running these contests (with a small incentive) it would mostly help to sharpen and focus the creativity in a mostly casual and friendly competiton....
We could alternatively, have everyone submit the entries to us unseen by a final due date, but I think, while more "fair" it would not serve the originally intended purpose, which is really one of sharing and learning from each other.
Having people post their entries haphazardly, and being able to read the comments others make is really the fruit that we are trying to grow...it is the "prize" that we all get, posters and non posters alike...
Let's keep in perspective that the final "winner" or "winners" are chosen non scientifically by the tyrannical whims of a couple of eccentric geeks...as in the art world, who is really to say, this is better than that? After meeting certain criteria, the final descisions are really based on personal tastes, and those, vary widely within the whole community....O.K. I'm ranting and getting long winded now....sorry:)

Within this context and spirit, we are open to any promising suggestions that might make these contests better as a whole.

Meanwhile, I am eagerly looking forward to the next bunch!

I agree, Stefan -- keep the contest as is.

I know I made comments regarding every single entry...they were all great!! I know this might sound crazy, since I didn't even enter it, but... "I ACTUALLY WON THE CONTEST!"

I don't have a digital camera, so I won't be able to show-off my set-ups here, but I was able to take the coolest ideas from EVERY contestant and meld them into my own game-world. LOL...my game room IS the Den Of Evil right now and we've had some killer gaming sessions over the last few weekends. At least for me, that has been worth more to me than any cash prizes that were actually awarded, so I truly thank you all!

Good luck everyone in the MBS contest! I'm looking forward to winning that one too :)

~Cheers

If you want suggestions... make some Pre-painted tavern people so we can get them in the MBS set up ;)

I need Civillians. While i have seen a decent number now from various sources still can't get any pre-painted. I honestly feal like i wasted much of Sunday painting minis that didn't even get finished or come out that good.
I don't like to paint, i'm not good at it, and it takes way too much time. I hope either Reaper gets on the ball and maked some in their Legendary line or some one does, cause i am ready to shell out some serious cash to get pre-painted Civies in Fantasy and Sci-fi that are pre-painted, there are a few modern, but still not that many.

I have commissioned hundreds of dollars in painted miniatures.

I have been satisfied with the results.

Let me know if you want the links.

I'm trying one of our own next ;)

Harneloot,

Please send the links. I typically paint the main antagonist myself and take severeal weekends to do it. However painting townsfolk is boring and I do not spend to much time on it so they do not come out any good. I would love to find someone to do common painting for me. My email is
dm underscore horn at hotmail dot com thanks in advance.
