Well, I caved -- as it were -- and bought my first HA molds in quite some time. Ghengis Ska can take credit for one of them -- I got the starship wall mold after he sent me some pieces to play around with and I confirmed it really is a useful mold to supplement hte DF SF stuff.

The other is one of the cavern wall molds Bruce designed. The two cavern molds don't really make anything like the DF caverns -- Bruce has said that he isn't interested in making something that's already on the market. He wants to do something more open-ended, which makes sense since the Castlemolds in general are meant for people who want to build any crazy thing they can come up with, so having a way to just essentially make your own DF would be sorta "off." Heck, you can make your own molds of DF caverns and build as many as you want, if you decide to go that route. (and you already bought the DF caverns, of course)

At the same time, it's possible to make a mold of basic bricks and let people build whatever structures they want, but doing hte same thing for caverns is pretty hard. So Bruce compromised and made a mold that makes vaguely open cavern walls -- enough to create cover and the outlines of rooms, but not so much that the end result looks like a maze or a row of hedges.

Anyway, point is, these are stalagmites and natural looking rock formations. I passed on the first mold, which gives you a door (which I wouldn't use) and a longer wall (which, since I have the DF stuff, I would have limited use for). Instead, I got the second -- gives you some funky rock formations, and also a barrel and a crate, which is neat. (though I'm up to my ears in these things generally, Bruce's are quite nice so I won't really mind having a few extra)

What I really like about the cavern mold so far:

1. You can get everything you need in one cast. Usually, an intriguing architectural element comes in pieces, so you need 2-4 casts to get one element. A mold has half an arch, for example, so it will take two casts to get the full arch. In the case of the dome, you need to do something like EIGHT casts to complete a dome. Even if all you need is two casts, that adds up -- want ten arches on your building? Twenty casts. Want fifteen arches? THIRTY casts. Ugh. But with this mold, one single cast gives you EVERYTHING. So each additional cast just gives you more and more.

2. You get some funky accessories. I like the barrel and crate a lot. I don't NEED them, but they are nice. And for some people, they'll be very useful.

3. These are formations that should work VERY well with DF. They're great stalagmites, great ways of creating more variety and "clutter" in the open caverns many of us already have.

4. These are very low effort molds. Usually, to get the most out of Hirst Arts, you have to enjoy doing this kinda thing. It's a lot of casting, a lot of assembling, a lot of painting. It would take a month to get anything really interesting. But with these, one or two casts is going to give you a nice set of rocks, and you don't have to do much gluing and painting will be very easy. You don't have to design your own structure, either -- these assemble in pretty much only one way. No engineering, no architecturing, no interior designing. For die hard HA fans, these are all limitations, perhaps unwelcome ones. But it might also make them all the more appealing to people who DON'T like building terrain from scratch.

EDIT: 5. I didn't quite realize this, though Bruce does talk about it. The pieces are all designed to work on a grid, so while they appear natural and not "geometric," they do fit onto the DF grid perfectly -- the large stalagmite that I particularly like takes up exactly one small square on the grid -- it's funky! I'll definitely post pics later tonight (so long as the camera battery doesn't die!)

I'll be posting some pics in the "Cool Photos" thread so people can check these out. I highly recommend them.

Cool, these do look nice, i have been meaning to get these. i want them, but with Alliance and Empire comming out this month the Gaming budget is spent already and i haven't even bought anything. ;)

I saw the pics they look good, and darn it i guess i will have to get them bext month.

I guess i'll be getting some more Hydrostone as well. darn June's budget is almost spent as well... ;)
I've been on a bit of a HA kick as of late, myself. I wanted some scenery bits, like an Altar some statues etc and been using some of the random bits to make some, i hope to take the pics of them tommorrow night, when i put up my DoE contest photos.

I'm almost really interested in the newer ones, but i like them all... Agh!

Heh heh heh

I wouldn't worry about THAT - none of this stuff would be allowed...

And I'm feeling pretty handicapped by the DoE, that's why I haven't entered yet. If I can't mix DF sets and I can't use my own accessories and figures.... I'm not so sure I can be as creative as some of you guys!

Hwhe heheh heheh heee, yeah Harneloot the Limitations are very equalizing, enter this thing you can't win if you have nothing in. All of the accessories are pure DF in these set ups, but they or the lack of things did inspire me to make some stuff going
i wish i could put an X into the set up that DF had..."
