Anyone out there paint both Reaper AND GW? 7 Years, 5 Months ago
I may be one of the last members of a dying breed, but I find things I want to paint from just about everywhere. Sometimes I paint Reaper, and sometimes I paint GW -- a lot of GW stuff is crazy overpriced ($15 for a normal sized humanoid figure?!?!) but some of it is quite good ($35 for 20 skeletons you can easily pose how you want plus get a lot of extra bits for conversions/accessories is a great deal).

The thing is, because of the nature of the games, GW stuff is very army-oriented, and it encourages painting whole squads -- when you get some quality GW stuff, you want a lot of similar figures with subtle differences, painted in matching colors.

Reaper stuff, on the other hand, is very individual -- with a Reaper figure, you rarely see the need to get more than one, and if so, it's only because you become really attached to two paint schemes and can't decide between them. (I want him in red -- no, blue!)

But it's odd for me, I notice sometimes how different the mindset is for both. I picked up some old Dark Elves recently, to paint up as guards for my DoE, and I'm really liking them -- but it's nearly impossible for me to stop at just 4 or 5. Somehow with these figures I get into a mindset where I want to see 10 of them together. And I realize sometimes I need to stop myself. I can order just the parts I want at my local gaming store, and treat them like Reaper figures -- just one or two is all I need. But GW somehow manages to make me think I need 16.

It's not really news, of course, but I really am fascinated by how good GW is as marketing. Just glancing through White Dwarf, looking at the catalogues, it's nearly impossible to look at a GW figure you like and think "I only need one or two of that." You tend to think in twelves.

For example -- the GW dryads are pretty great. Nasty, spiky, tree-women, they look really cool. And it's really cool to have a whole army of them, a whole forest come to life, slashing and slicing and stabbing. But, really, if Reaper sold a single blister of sometihng like this, I'd probably be happy to get three, at most. Maybe four. But with GW, they do all these subtle differences in faces and arms, tiny little changes, and suddenly you need 16. You need 32. You need 15 in one shade of brown, 10 in another. 15 with green leaves, 10 with red and orange leaves. 5 or 6 should be white, birch, or dead trees in winter. Suddenly they make it seem tempting to get a ton of something that, had Reaper released it, you'd never imagine getting more than 5 at the absolute most.

It's something I'm really impressed by. The sheer genius of their marketing ability.

L--I'm with you. I'll paint just about any mini that I can get my hands on.

Right now I'm working on a bunch of Reaper stuff, a few GW pieces, some Grim Reaper Castings figures, a bunch of old Ral Partha pieces, and a few others I'm sure many folks here haven't heard of (Fantascene--the original minis company, not the terrain makers on the internet, Harlequin, Mithril, Steve Barber, Grenadier).

I pick pieces that I really like and want to add to my game and then paint them. I'm not too fond of many GW figs so I give them closer scrutiny than I do the Reaper stuff. I almost never buy more than 1 of any figure unless it's like a town guard, horde of zombies, or otherwise (and I have tons of those already!). I don't like the "chase" aspect of collectible games and GW kind of reminds me of that model with respect to their figures. You see some great posess on their website but are almost guaranteed never to get that exact pose unless you buy a box and fiddle around with the figures. I like to be able to see exactly what I'm purchasing so that I know what the end results will look like.

As far as mind set for me when painting, it's usually one mode: "Let's make this figure look really good." Almost 100% of the time I know what I'm going to use a figure for (a villain, a Player Character, an important NPC, etc. etc. etc.) so I start to let that figure's "character" come to life in my head. That helps me with the paint scheme and also often affects how good the piece comes out.

I've been cracking out the minis this winter--totally got the paint bug again this year--and have covered a lot of territory with respect to manufacturers. I think I shared the link but here it is again (shameless plug!) in case anybody wants to have a peek: www.purgatorio.com/gameroom/miniatures/painted_2006-2007/

My server has been moving pretty slowly, so be patient.

I started as more of a figure painter than a gamer. I still am, in theory if not in practice since my time is so limited. I've probably painted something from every fantasy miniature manufacturer that's been around over the last 20 years.

It's amazing to me, too, how I managed to be "brainwashed" by the GW machine into "squad-based" thinking. Sure, in the distant past (before GW) I thought having several Drow for an encounter was good but now I find myself even picking blisters of Reaper off the rack with that "GW unit mentality".

"Wow, if I get these 3 dwarves and then this one, and this one as a leader, and this one with the crossbow for ranged attacks .... " !!!! Next thing you know, I end up with another project that doesn't get finished (why I love pre-painted ... see other threads). I do try to limit my painting projects to special characters (from any manufacturer) but then I think they're too cool not to have a retinue, hirelings, subordinates ...

It really is insane but I'm okay with it :D

One thing I've noticed that GW is particularly good at -- maybe because I have a collector's mentality -- is allow for a lot of customizing in their plastic regiments. There are so many different heads you can use, different weapons, different types of armor.

So it's like "Yes, I have this dark elf painted -- but I don't have one with THAT armor, and THAT weapon, withOUT a shield, with his arms UP instead of DOWN!"

And by the time you've exhausted all the variations, you have 20 of the things.

Actually, that could be one reason why I don't object to the way Reaper re-uses their basic molds. I know I've heard complaints -- rarely, because a lot of people love Reaper, but I do hear them all the same -- from people saying "they all look alike." On the face of it, that's absurd -- I can produce HUNDREDS of completely unique, utterly distinctive Reaper figures. But I do know what these people mean, because I can also produce many many groups of probably 3-5 figures with only subtle differences that look a lot alike, too. Lots of women in robes, lots of men with swords, lots of knights, etc, that all follow a pattern. Reaper gets the most value out of tooling by releasing essentially the same figure with only minor changes sometimes. And I don't object for the same reason I like to get GW plastic regiments sometimes -- but I don't have the one with the dagger instead of the sword!!!

And I have to say, it isn't ALL marketing and brainwashing. Those GW regiments are the ones where the figures end up costing $4 or less per mini. Now, granted, sometimes you have to wonder "But do I really need 16 of these guys?" But if you decide "Sure!" you are getting a really good bargain. If you really want 12 elf archers instead of recognizing you only need 2, they're a great bargain.

I paint anything that captures my imagination at the time, or will seem like a cool encounter for my campaign. I recently painted up two badgers - one an old Ral Partha (sized Tiny to Small), and the other a Reaper (sized Small to Medium).

L is right about the GW dryads - I have a box of 'em that I'm itching to paint.

My figures come from a wide variety of manufacturers, both current and out of production. Ral Partha made some of the best minis in their day, and Grenadier had some nice ones as well. I've a ton of both. Reaper became the new source of lead (okay, pewter) for me, but I've picked up stuff from Earthdawn, Emperor's Choice, Privateer Press, Heresy, Hasslefree, Rackham, RAFM, Clan War, Chronopia, Celtos, and Dark Sword.

Now I just need time to paint my miniatures. By my calculations, I should have them all finished by the time the sun goes nova.

I too own (and paint) all of the above...and more...I still have old Ral Partha (lots) and other minis (painted and [mostly] unpainted) - some (fully lead) from the 1980s even! yeah...some maybe (assuradly) even earlier. I've never been able to keep up with all the figures I get - I literally have box fulls to someday get to...lol. But yeah - I would rather paint individual figures versus armies (though I've done more of the latter of late) - and I do have a few Warhammer & Blood Bowl guys and such (mostly special figures or Dwarves with cannons sort of thing...) - and I have nearly every LOtRs mini GW has ever made! (nearly all...and painted perhaps 1/4 of them...if that...)...including those from the 1980s when they were put out under the Citidel name! Anyway its such a shame that I am a pretty crappy painter (compared to most of you no doubt)....but I am pretty much the opposte of Myrthe - a gammer first and a painter only by necessity...though I do enjoy it...so they tend to be good enough for my uses...but yeah I do wish I could paint better and that I had the time to do so as well...

As a painter, collector and gamer I buy figures from any range that I need for a particular game or would look forward to paint. Reaper, GW and Foundry make up most of my 28mm collection.

I own large Vampire Counts and Skaven armies but also own odd boxes of units that I use for roleplaying e.g. a box of 20 Empire Halberdiers/Swordsmen make for good town guard when playing a roleplaying game.

The only issue is the time to paint them all, so I have a couple of painters who do a slow but steady turn around each year. This, added to what I paint, means I have enough to keep my interest up.

I'll paint anything I can't get my hands on (well... I meant miniatures). I even manage to get some old Ral Partha from the 70's.

Some other neat lines that you don't see too often: Old Glory's Vampire Wars has some great minis, and Magnificent Egos has some of the coolest critters. Crunch-Waffle has a giant archer fish that I'm dying to get, and they also have some awesome Gael Goumon sculpts. Eastern Front Studios have some great minis as well - I'm going to convert two of their giant seahorse riders into minis taken from the Denis Beauvais cover for The Dragon #83 (you old-timers might remember the chessboard covers).

There are some new companies out there that are putting out some sweet minis. A friend of mine sent me an orc shaman and Dwarf slayer champion from Avatars of War. And Dark Slave Miniatures in Spain looks to have a neat line of Dwarves and Chaos warriors.

We live in a wonderful age!

Have you guys seen the line by Wyrd Miniatures? www.wyrd-games.net/shop/home.php?cat=255
They have some really cool stuff. A little on the taller side (32mm), but still very cool sculpts.

There's another line also that I really like but have been hesitant to buy into because the scale is again, taller than most of the minis I have (not that I want every figure the same height but the difference here might be really noticeable and look weird at 36-40mm): www.monolithdesigns.co.uk/disturbia.htm

If you want to trade rather than sell, check out Bartertown.

www.bartertown.com/

As with anything, make sure to check references when trading. I've done three trades there, all well. A fourth trader was to send an item, but evidently hasn't done so. He was to send first, so I've not lost anything in the process.

Trading may net you more than selling on eBay and buying. Or not. I guess it's all a case of whatever the market will bear.

Best of luck!
