Well, one question has been answered -- prices are in!

And I have to say -- so far, they have a hit on their hands! Clearly, a lot depends on the paint itself, not to mention the sculpts. And, yes, some of these may be so common that many people feel they can skip 'em. Still, newbies enter the hobby every single day. It's easy for me to dismiss some new DDM sculpts as repetitive, but tons of people never picked up Harbinger, Dragoneye, Archfiends, etc. With all the people coming in new, we can't assume everyone already owns these.

Anyhoo, I digress. The prices are downright OUTSTANDING. They are CHEAPER than the unpainted Reapers! CHEAPER! WTH!?!? I have no idea. Supercool price list, tho... And notice, the basic figs can be bought as 3-packs OR singles, it seems like the singles will be the same figures from the multi-packs. Even cooler! Get a basic 3-pack, and then repeat just the ONE figure that's your favorite! That's even MORE flexibility than I anticipated!

Ghengis,

You can never have too many orcs... ;)

I agree though, it is too bad they didn't focus on something like drow or races DDM are light on.

I have a Gallon of Orcs (they are stored in a Gallon jug i have so many, and it's full and has spilled over into another container, I have had some odd luck with pulls i tend to get loads of Orcs) so yeah i think that is enough, for RP purposes.
If i were trying to amass an army for a wargame, maybe not, but for me that is enough, i really am getting annoyed at all of the orcs in each D&D mini set, one of the reasons i don't buy as much any more, i want different monsters. As L said they are starting to get very repeatitive, and i suppose it has to in some respects becuase you need to get newer people a chance to get the basics. On the flip side I have to say I love the idea in SW minis becuase one can NEVER have enough Stormtroopers... ;) I just don't think the same way in D&D.
I don't think the drow are under represented either there has been at least 1 drow in every over half the sets, (yes some of them are older sets so recently they are under represented and i find them over used so i dislike them so any i get i loath... so i might be biased).
There are more and more oddball monsters i want to see, like Sea Devils (Sahugiun's or how ever you spell it) or something else like that. If DDM or Reaper were making those, the Rare to Uncommon in the Blinds' i'd go for them, I want about 10 Sea Devils but they have only made i WotC mini of it, i ended up going Deep Spawn from Mage knight, they work.
But they have made the Commons from the DDM which i have enough of. But then i don't think i am the target group so no big loss for them on my part.

All

I'm surprised not to hear anyone saying - I have enough of these thanks to DF miniatures.

For Skeletons that is actually where i got all i needed from DF, in theDoE expansion Pre-sale Bonus. I love the quality of them, and the paint but The DF minis are suffering the same problem the Reaper ones are going to for me. don't need orcs, I got loads of Good Skeletons from DF so now i don't need those either. Neither group is making the minis i want. (some of the minis i want almost no one makes, and the few i have found are not pre-painted...)

I have three warbands so far:

I started with a halfling warband. This was just ignorance of how Mordheim works when I choose them. Halflings are quite pathetic in a lot of areas - but they have one really strong bit going for them - other player feel double humbled if they loose. If you have halflings nobody expects anything else from you. So play them careful and wait for a chance (which works more often as expected) or use the first chance to retreat.
The worst I ever had - walked on the board with 18 characters. Managed to get off with three of them (I was ambushed in the middle by two other war bands. My thief got off thanks to starting at the edge of the board due to infiltrate. My Oger got off as he was fast enough and I just send him running. And my leader got off as the sole remaining character - partly due to luck, partly as I sacrificed a lot of others and partly as he crawled off the edge - down but not out.

A lizard men party is my second group. I went for Lizard Men as I could use the DF minis - and as they have more potential long term as the halflings.

Same goes for orks. I hace the DF orks, I have some painted gobbos as well as some cave worms which do nicely as squigs.

The appeal of painted minis would be:

a) as a GM to buy in monsters (and maybe key NPC players) ahead of a game / campaign

b) To buy in a Mordheim warband

Yes - I have 20 metal minis - halflings - waiting to be painted. I saw them advertised at a game show last April. Took the company 8 weeks to deliver (special order from Italy). Last weekend I finally glued some proper bases on them together with some black lava. This is as far as I'm with painting them - more or less a year after I started the war band.

Yep - they will look better eventually as whatever I will buy in plastic. But this is only once they are finished.

In regard to minis I want:

I was on a big fair last April. I just had started my halfling warband. I was going from stall to stall - loads of orcs, dwarfs, goblins with various weapons, poses - whatever you want.

Halflings - a few Lord of the Rings ones for ludicrous prices. I nearly gave up when I saw a small stall offering 3 kinds of halflings blister with up to 10 figures each - most of them different poses. It was exactly what I wanted - but I was searching for them high and low ...

And my war piggies I got as some farm animals ...

So I agree - you won't get at the start what you are really after - but I hope this will change with time if they manage to get decent sales.

GS, I know what you mean about SW v. DDM on the "common" figures. One of the reasons I'm so excited for Alliance and Empire is that we'll finally have a pure-OT set where even the commons will be figures I want, and want tons of. Ah, it'll be great.

But back onto the fantasy topic -- yeah, I would be more excited if the initial offering were more slanted towards unusual figures. At the same time, of course, it makes sense to start the way they are. If anything, I'm half-expecting them to use the DF sculpts, the descriptions are so similar!

But the price is right, for me, so if these look good, I'll grab 'em even if I already have them. As far as I'm concerned, it's always possible that the new skeletons or orcs will render my old ones obsolete, they'll be so cool looking. And if that's the case, I'm happy to make room.

And they've been pretty explicit -- if the line does well, they intend to do EVERYTHING, including the funkier stuff they've done with DH. Will WOTC give them grief if they turn to mind flayers and beholders? Perhaps. We'll just have to wait and see.

Oh, and nobody's saying anything about the ogre, troll, and minotaur -- those could be REAL neat! I've never been crazy about the WOTC versions of these, especially the ogres and trolls, which have been substandard across the board (IMHO). I'm really excited to see Reaper's take. And while I've never been crazy about Reaper OR WOTC minotaurs, the price is certainly right!

I hope the painted figs do well, perhaps even really well......but not Fantastically well....not so well, that people stop buying the metal figs....
...as you pointed out L, the prices of the painted figs are the same or better? than the metal ones...this could spell eventual doom for the metal figs...metal is expensive, plastic (even with painting) is cheaper in mass quantities...so, it will all depend on volume...as well as people getting used to buying painted figs. unfortunately, newcomers will probably go for the pre-paints rather than learning how to paint metal figs...this may go the way of the dinosaurs...I really hope I am wrong, as this may spell doom for ALL of society...

Another fear i have is that in the coming years, miniature companies may lose the ability to understand the difference between good sculpting and great, work of art level, sculpting...if eventually, all the miniatures people use are plastic, hastily painted mini's, rather than what we so often see now at convention contests, and web sites: Beautiful paint jobs and glazes by traditional hoobyists, companies may start to cut corners, or lose the ability to understand the nuances, or start to think that because the painting is done in a generc, hasty way, there is no need to take the sculpting to the greater level...It is the hoobyists, the figure painters that keep the miniature companies honest.

If the doomsayer inside me muses on this... it is countered by the optimist inside me, that says that perhaps then some new company would pop up to revive what would then be the "lost art" of fine metal miniature sculpting. Reaper has done SO much to further this hobby and so I would hope that this is not a step backward, but rather a brave step forward...

Stefan, Reaper has said that they are NOT abandoning metal minis. I certainly hope they never do!

Maybe I should change my sig to "Make Mine Metal!"

I don't think there will ever be a complete die off of the people who like to paint metal miniatures, there is always a and vocal portion of the minis people who are more painters than gamers, and they will keep it alive, it might be more expensive than the plastics, but for me price is the big issue. I am Not a war gammer, we went for YEARS with no minis (1980-1999), even around 99 when 3.0 was strong we used markers chess pawns etc if we needed them. So for me i don't NEED the minis, like i Don't need DF, i just really like to have nice visual representaions. DF (in mini and terrain) does that, WotC lines do it as well, and so do the WizKids, and for me it is not part of the hobby to paint, it is a very Tertiary if not lower order on my list of things. I run unpainted minis all the time (well i used to before i got enough DDM). I prefer Painted, just because they look better, but i don't need master level painting. I think there are/were a lot of people like me who just want a good cheap fix for thier visual needs, WotC/Wk provided that, But there are enough people who want no-blind to be heard, the question for me is will it sell, and be proftiable.

WotC and MK knock out 60 minis in a set (well WK only really does 40 or so Sculpts in a set it may be a 120 figure expansion but they use the same sculpt fpr 3-4 figures ranging from rookie to LE, and just a minor paint job and different base) you can get loads of figures fast, and make the random odd stuff becuase it all sells the same. Reaper is having to go limited production 20 or so figures in this run, non of which i am interested in, i just hope they can keep at it till they get ones i want. Don't get me wrong one of the reasons i'm in this thread is i think it's a good idea, just so far they have nothing i want.
I love the idea of Pre-painted, i just want things i can't get otherwise, so far they arent' giving me that.
If thet pop the towns folk pre-painted I would snag up a bunch at this price!

I just don't need generic monsters i need generic people, heroes, and odd ball monsters.

Stefan, the way I see it, the older gamers get, the more time they're likely to have on their hands once they get past a certain age.

Teens & 20s: Lots of time to game and paint, most likely single with no kids
30s & 40's: Busy with wife, kids, family stuff as well as career, less time to game and paint minis
50's & up: Getting near retirement, LOTS of time to devote to painting those mountains of lead you
collected when you were a "kid". ;-}~

Seriously though, I think metal figs will be around for awhile.

I think it's great that you got out of minis, Stefan -- $5 for a 3-pack of skeletons! DF would have found it very hard to compete with that....

Dante -

I'm 55 and nowhere NEAR Retirement (I WISH!); that's why I buy lots of plasti-crack.
Besides, I'm a MUCH better Engineer than I am a Painter; didn't you notice in my castle pics how it was built, and how it was painted? VERY basic paintjob, but it will take either an earthquake or me jumping up and down on it to bring THAT castle down!

Retirement; HAH!

See ya!
