Dante,

I had the same problem in California. You might want to try what I did. I built a cart on wheels to wheel from my garage to the back patio. I could work on the cart and leave it outside if something was curing. The weather was mostly nice so this was never a problem for me. Not sure if it would work for you. Good luck in the spring.

Shadox--that's a great idea that I may very well have to explore. Maybe there's something out there I could pick up "off the shelf" cheap. Of course that wouldn't give me a chance to get out my powertools this summer... ;-}~

One thing I've noticed with some DDM sets, maybe all of them (I haven't examined this theory all that thoroughly)...

It seems like the really terrible figures, most of the time, are, frustratingly, rare. That's fine for people who are going back to eBay to fill in a collection -- expensive figures you can skip! But when you buy a booster, it's really annoying if the one rare fig you get, rather than being one of the better figs in a set, is one of the worse.

True, some commons can be pretty lame. They usually suffer from worse paint jobs, fewer paint apps, and more basic, familiar, repetitive poses. (WOTC seems to have one default dwarf pose, and when they use a different one, it's like you can hear bells chime somewhere...)

But typically, the 4 or 5 figs in a set that rank as real stinkers are in the "rare" category. This time around, we've got things like the Blood Golem of Hextor, which is just awful, and the Shield Guardian, which is pretty lame. (I suppose some Fantastic Four fans might like it as a variant on a Super Skrull, which is all it makes me think of, the villain who shares all of the FF's powers...) I also happen to hate the Ogre Executioner, but I've never been crazy about any of the WOTC ogres, the hyrdocephalic look never worked for me. I prefer the GW ogre approach, from the recent-ish updated ogres. Fat guys with underbites, tusks, and cleavers. Anyhoo, I digress. A few other rares I could do without -- the wizard of Turmish is a great idea (flying carpet!) but his pose and face sculpt look awful in the pics I've seen, he looks terribly executed. (to be fair, he counts more as "disappointing for a rare" than "worst figure in the set" -- as an uncommon, he'd be far more acceptable) And the large Astral Construct looks pretty awful, too. Is there really no way that could have been an uncommon? I suppose these things are rare, but the execution is awful. It should at least be done in clear plastic -- that's their new "thing," and it would turn a blandly messy sculpt into something kinda cool. But to cast it in white plastic and then not paint it -- ugh. It doesn't look like anything! It's just a mess -- in any category, he's a bland disappointment. If I pull it, and I can't sell it, I'll have to try to paint it up somehow, to turn it into something I can live with. I don't know how, though, honestly.

On the other hand, there are others I'm dying to own. This is a pretty solid set, I think, and DF forum-browsers can look forward to seeing many of these guys in future pics of mine... ;) But I was really surprised, when I started to notice this trend that the worst figures in the sets, for the most part, come from that "rare" category...

Great! I just bought a bunch of the Unhallowed stuff off of a guy on ebay(preorder). I don't need to buy a case of these. As L said, some of them are less desireable. I just got the ones I really want minus one or two that he didn't have listed. However, I am also also about to get a case of SWM Clone Strike! I am so excited. I figure this is a good time to stock up on plasti-crack, while we are waiting on the new DF sets to arrive. Right?

Yeah, I hear what you're saying L, there are a few of the mini's here that are just not up to par, but...there are some really cool ones too and they will definitely fit in well with my (our) DF layouts. Hey! That Orge Executioner isn't half bad. I kind of like him, as long as he's not TOO big. It's hard for me to judge the size on some of these minis.

Like all of their sets, I'll just discard/sell the ones that I don't like or can't use. I don't have the artistic talents that you do L, so I'll have to buy the prepainted ones. Overall, I feel that this is one of their best sets...plus, the price is right!

Got my Unhallowed stuff today -- pretty neat! The only real "dud" I pulled was the large astral construct -- i.e. large dull white thing.

The "Caller in darkness" is perfect for DoE, and of course all the undead are fun. For some reason, I decided to paint this set -- I've done a handful of repaints with previous sets, but I've never really approached the whole set as "only partially painted," despite the fact that they almost always are. Belts and straps are rarely painted, sheild emblems too. So besides the occasional repaint, I've also been "touching up" some of them. (case in point: the duergar is a nice dwarf figure, but he's almost entirely unpainted, despite having an elaborate belt, cool keyrings, and tons of detail on his outfit)

These guys will probably be pictured in future layouts I post, esp. the caller figure...

L,

I got my unhallowed yesterday. I agree with you that with out a doubt the worst figure in the entire 12 sets has to be teh astral construct. So after a few beers (read many beers) I decided to do my first touch up. I came up with a prismatic elemental from energy that exists between planes and on the edge of planes where they overlap. I will not be able to complete it today as I wanted to finish it with Glow in the dark paint. I ordered some from a website and it will take about a week to come in. When I finish it I will post it here probably next weekend. Good luck with your touchups. (Can not wait to introduce my players to the 20+ zombies I received, and the 2 beholder liches)

Yeah, I was thinking of repainting the construct, but I feel like it really should have been cast in clear plastic. I wonder if I can create any kind of neat effect on an opaque figure. But prismatic does seem to be the way to go -- I had the same thought, but no clear idea of what to do. I'll anxiously await your pics -- I may post mine on eBay to see if I can get my $15 bucks back, but if nobody bites at that price (and what masochist would?!) then I guess repainting is the only option I'll have.

A word or two about the zombies and liche -- the Beholder lich is SO MUCH COOLER than it looked in the pics. The pics made it look to me like it's big eye had sort of crusted over, but in fact it's just rotted out, a big cavity there. Narsty!

And the Strahd zombies -- boy, one of the best examples of great sculpt, terrible paint. Few DDM figs have sported better sculpts, IMHO, and the paint completely hides it. First, the spilled intestines are ORANGE. Second, they've been painted with a single stripe of orange that spills over onto the figure most of the time. It ruins it. Plus, though this part is understandable, there's no wash. I gave mine a light brown inkwash, and it highlights all the wonderful folds and tatters in the outfit. I'll post pics eventually -- WORLDS better! Plus, I painted the intestines a deep red, and added some red to the mouth and chin for good measure. Now THAT'S a zombie! Wicked...

The other thing I noticed is the sheer number of figures that benefit from a light drybrush -- so many outfits are riddled with studs, straps, and buckles, none of which have been given any paint at all (examples: duergar, vampire hunter, changeling rogue). A detailed going-over would make them great, but even just one basic coat of a light brown/grey drybrush gives them SOME depth. I'm also making a green version of the wild elf, and maybe I'll do a sort of mottled version, or a gold/red autumnal version. Like I said before, I don't know why, but for some reason I find myself wanting to paint/customize a lot of this set, more than I ever did with previous sets...
