Oh, I don't know how I missed this! Well, unfortunately, I've been sick lately, so I'm somewhat stuck at home this weekend (as my frequent forum posts today show...) I'll see how I feel later in the week, though!

Thod;

You found DF in a GW store?
And the manager didn't get fired the next day? WHOA!!!! Major Announcement!!!
GW has ALWAYS been (in MY experience) EXTREMELY proprietary in their marketing; the thought of allowing ANYONE ELSE'S products in their store has always been anathema to them, at least in the US.
Only recently have I ever heard a GW employ say - in public, while wearing GW identification - something GOOD about a non-GW gaming product. And it WAS about DF; the guy actually admitted that he LIKES DF stuff!

They revived me five minutes later.

See ya!

Jim

It's true, way back when, I tried to get my local GW store here in NYC to carry our stuff to no avail...they even refused to accept free product to adorn their window display...they were all pretty dismissive of anything else...the vibe of heavy attitude was suffocating...

Stefan;

A friend of mine - in fact, the guy who got me STARTED in all this insanity we call gaming - is a GW fanatic. Goes to Games Day here in Baltimore every year, beats the pants off CORPORATE gamers at the Battle Bunker on a regular basis (he plays 'Nids and Necrons to KILL - and is starting on Chaos), and has been invited to go to work for them multiple times, as an Outrider, as a Store manager, and any other position the guys at US Corporate can think of. And he has reported that the former "GW or DIE!" attitude is starting to fade. But unfortunately, it is taking a l-o-n-g time, and the UK branch has not shown ANY progress in dropping that mindset.
But U.S. corporate has hope; none of us knows WHY, but they do.

I actually managed to walk past three of the shops - and spend some time in two of them. The Compleat Strategist was closest to my hotel. It was still closed when I passed by. I then passed by Pandemonium Books - they opened an hour later - so no luck as well. Then I spend some time in Utrecht Arts Supply (Mass Avenue, between Pandemonium and GW). Great store - loved all the stuff they had. From there I went on to the GW store. Nice dungeon underground with lots of tables and even some HA.
I spend there a while and bought two books about terrain building and painting as well as some green stuff. I went back to Utrecht to buy some bass wood and other bits to end up at Pandemonium. Got some figures there as well as the latest Knight of the Dinner table.
From there I just took the subway back - had done enough walking around.

I might go to Pandemonium tonight - they invited me for some games - and I'm not that far off. But depends how awake I feel when I'm finished here. Just leave a message in my hotel on my phone if you have time later the week.

That's great! The HA at the GW store is from me -- I'd built them a huge Osgiliath table, and it was very popular, but sadly, they never glued any of the buildings in place, and the younger players were a tad careless with them. In the end, much of the table was reduced to rubble, and some of that rubble was creatively incorporated into the store displays.

That GW shop has had some great tables over the years, but they too frequently allow things to fall into disuse and disrepair. Still, it's got some really cool stuff.

I'm still under the weather, but I may be feeling up to something later in the week.

I did ask if it was you - but either you aren't called Lawrence in real live of the shop clerc was referring me to someone else. There was a clock tower and some ruins I referred to.

I'm on my way home now. The next two days will be fully packed ...
