... Bards are very useful.

I'll never knock a Bard again after playing one today. :D

What game/edition?

It's damn hard to be a 1e AD&D bard, but if you can hack it, by the time you become one you're a friggin' one man army...!

We started a 9th level campaign 3ed.

I have to say though that this is belief is restricted to high level bards with 12 ranks in perform. I didn't kill nor shoot at a darn thing all session. But the bard definitely played a integral part of the team. With an AC of 35 or so and invisibility, the bard was basically a swiss army knife for the team. Cleric, medic, inspiring courage all around... I have to say I like it.

But I can see how it may get real boring to some.

Yeah, even though Gary himself said he'd have changed the bard to it's own unique class rather than the proto-"prestige" class it started out as, latter edition Bards never impressed me from the standpoint of blurring the lines between clerics, magic-users and fighters.

The preresiquites for the original bard were so nasty that no one could legitimately roll up those stats! Doug Schwegman actually designed the class back in the late 70's, and he must have had some magical dice to generate the numbers required.

Still, I cheated and made up a bard once. I had a good time, but he ended up dying -- trying to charm an ancient red dragon.

My DM said that I was turned into bard-e-que. At that time I thought it was NOT funny. Actually, I still don't.

My second character I rolled up I intended to make a 1E bard, but he was doing so well as a fighter I never made the switch to thief. They have their uses, but are not a "core" character.

For Roleplay they are Soo Kewl though... Playing in Inns for Cash, Great way to Trade Info with NPC's on the Road Etc... And I Know the Stats were Steep, I Guess that Limited (Significantly) Having too many Wacky Character Classes Running around together... (Uh Assassin Comes to Mind)...

Every time we have a bard try to entertain in a bar we either end up in a fight or someone wants to throw is in jail. Me thinks the dm doesn't like bards.

Am I the only one who hated them?

Druids!!!
Bards!!!!!!
Monks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What were they all about!
An X level monk can fall down any depth and not get hurt as long as he is within 47 miles of the edge!
Druids - with their +1 Green Fingers - I bet they used GM foods!
Bards - YUK! - Little gay twonks in puffy shorts with splits in them, singing 'hey nonny nonny' Look, I have a Magical Lute of Sleeping!! Nope - That's just because you're sooo boring mate!!
I'm not even too sure about multi-class and as for Paladins....
Hang on a minute, why have I been playing this game for 26 years?

OK Rant over!!

Well... Lets See... Best things about:

Druids... Uh... Clerics of the "Old" System that Could Use Swords (Scimetars anyway), That Made them a Nice Rule Bender...

Monks... Ok... Could Be the Ability to Fall From Low Orbit As Long as a Planet is Within Sight... Or That Death Touch Thing... Though I Have to Say the Monks in the Oriental Adventures were the Best with their "Unique" Combat Styles... Blind Fighting is Mucho Usefull...

Bards... Well I Think I Already Stated my Case for them...

Palladins on the Other Hand are the Only Class Ever Designed with the GM Being encouraged to Mess with the Players Specifically in Mind... They are a VERY Big Pain in the Arse to Play Correctly... But Annoyingly Fun...
