So the new "Icon" is out from WOTC -- these are the large boxed pre-painted "minis" designed for the minis game, but not sold in blind, random packages.

The previous releases -- another gargantuan dragon, black, and also a "colossal" red dragon -- were relatively well-received, though the red took a LOT of flak for being so poorly painted, and neither had a pose people were thrilled to see.

The blue, on the other hand, looks pretty darn cool. The pose is more natural, the proportions more seemly, and the wings really look wicked. I'm pretty happy with the paint job, too -- it's the best, and most complex, of the three, though people who REALLY care about paint may want to touch it up a bit. Still, it's not a bad paint job at all.

The price is gonna make people run in fear -- $30-40, depending on where you buy -- but I got mine for free through store credit at my FLGS, so that wasn't an issue for me.

The stats on it are a lot like what we saw with the black, but since I'm more of an RPGer than a mini's gamer, that's fine with me. This guy is gonna be an NPC with a lot of unique charm to him, if I ever get around to playing him, so the "official" stats don't matter to me. They're in the monster manual.

I imagine he'll show up in the "Cool Photos" thread eventuallly. . . ;) . . . . so I suppose regular forum-goers can expect to see him soon enough.

Amazon has him cheaper than list price ($26) if that makes a difference to anyone.

Can't wait for mine to come in the mail!

Looking forward to seeing him in a huge DF set-up L!!!

True....however, the WoTC dragon will have, at least, some paint on him! And, since I have a HUGE negative modifier on my "craft: painting" rolls, its WoTC or nothing!!!

Gauth says: "plastic dragons are wimps".

Maybe, but if my job pays me 30 dollars and hour, and my time with my family is invaluable....
I would have to say spending 8 hours painting a mini I will use rarely and can buy for 40 dollars is worth between 240$ and Priceless....

I love reaper mini's, but I will save them for my PC's and such.....

So keep bringing the Plasticrac!!!

Cheers!

Actually there are some very talented painters whipping up Reaper dragons for $100-$150 (mini included). Some of my friends paint for even less than that. For under triple the cost of plastijunk you can have a real dragon :)

When I get a chance, I'll snap some pics of some of some of our gaming group and friends work. When you learn some painting techniques you can crank a Gauth out in a few hours... For $50 clearance prices (EBAY) and a few hours of time, you can wow your group with a real dragon :)

Gotta say guys, I have yet to buy either a plasticrack WoTC OR a Reaper dragon, mainly because I'm cheap, but also, because I don't normally run dragons. When I DO, they're frequently the DragonStar types; slightly larger than humanoid, well-adapted, 'civilized' dragons who just happen to be natural magicians, far more magically advanced than most wizards or sorcerers, and coppsed of the weaponry that will make anyone less than Tech Level 5 (chemical-powered projectile weapons such as automatic rifles, etc.) run for cover - fast! One doesn't take sword to these guys and gals; they WILL eat the leftovers after they complete disassembly - of you!
When I DO need a big, nasty, less-than-technologically-advanced dragon, say one in the Medieval era of sphoistication, I can always grab my McFarlane guys.
Fancy-painted dragons, of the Reaper or PROPERLY done WoTC classes, can be played by my gamers - and some of them DO. I've always used my minis for generating the images in my players heads, anyway. RPG'ing is more of a mental images thing anyway, unless you're into hack 'n' slash. Or at least, that's the way I always viewed it.
Again, just my 2 cents worth; YMMV.

See ya!

I've got a Reaper big dragon -- Marthrangul -- and several "smaller" dragons (slightly smaller than the WOTC "Huge" dragons). I've also got all of the McF dragons, several Wizkids dragons, and a bunch of random other ones.

I really like the WOTC prepainteds though. It's not just the painting -- those large dragons have to be assembled, too, and with their size that means pinning, and usually a lot of green stuff for a lot of gaps. They are a big job.

And even if you DO have someone to put it together and paint it for you, the Reaper dragons, or any other large dragon, is harder to store. They're more fragile, more vulnerable, and heavier.

So while the WOTC dragons are flawed -- though I have to say, the Blue is really pretty fantastic and minimally flawed, so superior to the previous two -- they are also somewhat headache-free.

There are so many advantages to each version, that's why I can't bring myself to ignore any of them!

I looked at this on Friday, yeah the Price tag made me go EEEEEEEEEKKKKK, While it looks nice, i just can't justify spending the cash on it at this moment. I have yet to use the Black a Bought, or the Col Red i got free. So i was sitting ther going why shell out $30 for something i have no plans on using right now. I might buy it later, but just wasn't worth the price. I have McToys dragons i haven't used, and the game doesn't look to have any in it for a while... (though i may have to add a black just to use the darn thing :) )

I actually used the Black Dragon at ConQuest last year. It was fun. He was polymorphed and showed up at a big arena event to assasinate some folks. Great fun!
