How do McFarlane's dragons do, compared to the iconic line? Better? Equal?

Kaladhan I think it is largely a matter of taste there.

I think they can work great, many of them look better, with interesting scuplts, extreme detail and good paint jobs. I would say 80% of them make good Huge with some maybe hitting Garg, but none are Col.

But there are a few things you have take into account, none are on the right base, nor are they designed to fit within the grid of d20 that a "true" mini would be. They are McFarlane "toys" which means that they are designed never to be removed from the package and played with, if for some insain reason you do open one and use it (and by McFarlane standards use means place on shelf) be prepaired for it to have bits falling off and break after about 6 months. They get major wiggle in their 26 points of articulation (none of the Dragons have that many most have i would say 9 or so) after just a few adjustments of that limb/body part, and become wobbly and likely to fall over. The stands that come with them are nice in thier own right, and can look good as terrain. If the Dragon isn't on it's Terrain Stand, many won't stand up unless you glue them in that pose.

Does this sound like i am knocking McFarlane toys, yes and no, i don't consider them toys, i have collected toys for years and worked in Toys R Us while in college/grad school (in the 90's) and saw Numerous "spawn toys" (anything by his toy company) come already broken in the package. I guess it has gotten better now, but i have bought a few of these becuase i liked the look of them (and other Spawntoys over the years). If you move or adjust the figures they will become very loose, and many bits will fall off over time. I bought a WATER DRAGON CLAN 2 becuase i thought the look would be good for some Alien monsters in my SW game, and it has had one of its arms fall off, sitting on a shelf. (and i think it came out less than a year ago, late 2005).

If you really plan to use them get some glue and just stick it into a pose you like and be done with it.

McToys look great, but don't stand up to any wear and tear, (i hate calling them toys becuase they aren't they are statues that can move once or twice that's it). If you take care in handeling they can make great creatures for your PC's to fight, some of them in the hard to find catagory og Huge and even harder Garg.

I like the MacFarlane dragons a little better -- I've had no problem with those I have on the shelf over my computer.

But you are right, they are NOT meant to come off their bases, which means that you have to match the BASE to the environment you want to play in. If the dragon is standing on rocks, then you can use it in a cavern -- if it is standing on a ruined building, then it won't look right anyplace but outdoors.

Also be aware that bits that look like they should come off, don't. The Series 1 dragon with the rider, the rider doesn't come off -- that's the one on a ruined building, so it can ONLY be used in as a "domesticated" dragon attacking a village or castle. The "deluxe" dragon from that series is spouting fire at a (way too big) knight on horseback -- the knight can be removed from the base, but the flames are fixed into the dragon's open mouth (and look odd without the knight's shield to stop them.

I've only seen a picture, but the McFarlane Series 4 Fire Dragon features the monster "stooping" -- wings braking, feet splayed with talons spread, head forward with flames beginning, on a post based on what looks like a sand pile. (Just tell your players it's a pile of ash.)

What I really want to see is a dragon doing a proper fly-by -- wings fully extended, legs back, tail trailing, and neck curled to one side (or looking back). Reference scenes of Vermithrax in "DragonSlayer".

Sounds GREAT!
Uh, do you have a big enough game room for that display?

I was thinking of a 1/72 scale model of a dragon. I'm thinking two feet long, and a two foot wingspan, tops. It would probably hang on a wall (or possibly the ceiling) when not in use.

In the full-size range, I would prefer a living, wild dragon on the loose -- it might drive up insurance premiums, but think of the excitement we'd all feel just trying to get to work without being barbecued!

Screamin' released a vinyl Red Dragon of Krynn some time ago. I had one, though I never put it together, and eventually sold it on eBay. It was a nice sculpt, and awesome size for game use, but I didn't have time for painting it.

I saw one that had been slightly converted, with elongated horns, painted up as Smaug. It looked terrific.

After spending some time with the CRD, i must say i am glad i got it for free, i am vastly underwhelmed by it.

While it is a nicely solidly built thing, of good size and proportion, it is kind of lack luster in something, and i can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's the pose and the fact that it is kind of just sitting there, it just doens't look meancing to me, the fire breath makes it a little more meancing but for the price WotC wants for it i don't think it is worth it. The GBD was a bit pricey at $30, but it was the first Gargantuan, and and i think overall looks better, it looks more threatening and more alive than the CRD.

I am soooo glad i didn't pay for the CRD, i would have felt ripped off.

Yeah not bad, and maybe a Gar, but most likely a Huge, i REALLY REALLY like the berserker

And since they say September as release i think while i am out this weekend i will go looking for it. That rock formation i think would look GREAT in the DF caverns. I think others have said it before that they like this one but got to say it is my favorite. Though that ETERNAL is good too, wow after getting the CRD in my hands, i think the McToys are better, just wished they were a bit bigger... ;)

Jim - I don't thik that Herndon is quite that bad. Of course we bought our place nerly 20 years ago so it was definatly quite a bit cheaper. However the best gaming space we have is a 3 season outdoor screened in porch where I had a custom table built that will easily accomodate 12-15+ gamers and a pretty big layout.

BTW - I used to live in the Baltimore area (eons ago) and gamed at a game club in Catonsville that met at Rolling Road ? Elementary School. You really sound like someone I used to know there - lots of crazy Vietnam Vets - Air National Guard Pilots and such...its too bad I have lost touch and forgotten everyones's names. We used to have some great Kingmaker & 3rd Reich (& other multiplayer) games and often played a really fun large scale (WWII) fighter Pilot game on the gym floor...sound familiar?

THOTH,

Sorry, no. I didn't get into gaming until '89. I gamed Battletech with a guy from SF cons who used to look like a double for John deLancie - in fact, at Shore Leave the year deLancie was a guest, Will did the Judge Q costume and he & deLancie spent all weekend yelling "Q!" every time they saw each other in the halls! By Sunday afternoon we were all ready to throw BOTH of them out of the hotel; drove us all nuts - AND we had sore ribs laughing so much.

Hit my e-mail & we can take this off-forum.

See ya!
