Well I don't post here much, but I figured Id drop the dime on this one. I am pretty sure at least some of you guys here are old Dragonlance fans. Well, with the great news our river sets are finally here, I'll keep more good news comming. Margaret Weis, one of the original creators of Dragonlance had a big announcement today.

Dragons of Autumn Twilight the Movie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

I really wanted to wait until we could make the WAHOO Big Announcement on the dragonlance movie site (which is coming any day now, so keep watch!). But since Lucy Lawless gave us away, I'll let you know what's going on. Paramount Studios is making Dragons of Autumn Twilight as a full-length, adult, animated movie. I'll let the movie site provide you with details on the director, screen play writer, animation house, and all that.

Suffice it to say, Tracy and I have been working with the production team for over a year now. They've been wonderful to work with! They've allowed us to have script approval and asked for our suggestions. They've shown us all the art work and allowed us approval on that (as well as the WoTC art director in charge of Dragonlance). We've been working with the Whitestone Council people on this as well. (Thanks, guys!)

From what I've seen, it's going to be amazing! The art is great. Hopefully some of it will be up on the movie site. And Tracy and I will be talking more about the movie and maybe bringing along some art pieces on our book tour.

Tracy and I are both very excited about this!

Margaret

Now Im a huge DL fan so Im geeked up pretty good on this one......anyone else? In fact I run a pretty sweet DL campaign with all our pretty DF toys. I am running the group through the Temple of Luerkhisis (Ariakas's old stomping grounds) starting tommorow night. If I can get my damn digital camera to work I'll try to post some pics.

Oh yeah. I'm all over this. I want to hear more casting details and see some artwork before I get too excited, though. However, done correctly, this could be a really great film.

I'm happy, but I have two reservations:

1. This could be so EMBARRASSINGLY terrible, I mean really. These kind of movies, they get made properly 1 in a 100 times, and with LOTR, I think we may already have gotten the best we're gonna get. This seems ripe for disaster to me.

2. I am not sure how I feel about the "animated" thing. The problem is, the best animators tend to work at Pixar nowadays, or have other projects of their own invention. I worry this is going to feel like a knock-off, He-Man, GI Joe kinda thing, with bland animation and terrible, wooden dialogue.....

To be honest, for that matter -- while I love Dragonlance and grew up with it and tend to think that Raistlin is one of the best characters ever created, I also have to admit that the series is riddled with flaws, especially Autumn Twilight. They were just getting started, and they made a lot of mistakes. Pacing problems, cliches, wooden dialogue, and I really hope they cut or radically alter those centaurs.... And how many times do we need to be reminded that Raistlin has a whispery voice or smells like rose petals?

As a teacher who spends his time critiquing the writing of my students, I have to say that Dragonlance is not the best source to learn the craft. Still, they hit a few points very well, especially that wonderful portrait of Raistlin, torn between nobility and debasement, great stuff, especially for a young teen.

Man, I hope they do this movie well. And while we're at it, I want a Raistlin action figure. Or, more appropriate to this forum, I want WOTC to put a Raistlin figure in their prepainted line. Or three, actually -- red-robed, black-robed, and Fistandantilus. That would be COOOL....

Is that animated as in ink-and-paint-animated, or animated as in computer-animated? Are they aiming for theater release, or straight-to-video?

I'm surprised that, given the wild success of LotR, no one is doing "The Hobbit" as a PG movie for kids, or a PG-13 for teens. It's got plenty of decent action, including the encounter with the trolls (show the dwarves fighting and losing), the goblin attack in the mountains, the warg attack before Mirkwood, the spiders, the elves capturing the dwarves, the escape from the elves, Smaug's attack on Laketown, and the Battle of Five Armies -- heck, they might have to CUT some of the action sequences to keep the movie under three hours! Add to this the dramatic scene between Bilbo and Gollum, and the battle of wits between Bilbo and Smaug, and you've got a lot of really good stuff. And they've already got a ton of the preproduction out of the way already.

LotR/Middle-Earth is okay, in fact, it's a great Universe, BUT:

PERN!

Now THERE is a fantasy-going-towards-SF universe that I could sink my TEETH into (even if the partial upper DID come out as a result!)!
Picture a gold dragon, with a tiny little hottie on her back, sweeping out of a grayish sky, flame-thrower on the woman rider's back gushing at the silvery lengths of Thread, as bronze and brown dragons roar high above, breathing phosphine-gas flames at more Threads! Watch as one of the browns squeals in pain as a length of Thread sears a scar across the dragon's leg, and the dragon blinks out of sight, only to return a second later, farther ahead in it's flight path, and the frozen, blackened Thread falls off the beast's leg!

NOW, tell me that isn't a perfect topic for an excellent full-length feature film, LIVE-ACTION, with CGI dragons realistic enough to live up to Sean Connery's Dragonheart Draco? In fact, I just got an image of Natalie Portman sitting on that queen dragon's neck as Lessa, and Orlando Bloom on the lead bronze, Mnementh, as F'lar!

Damn, just writing that little blurb gave me a chill down my back, and I'm not all that much of a writer!

Anyone else here like the Pern novels?

See ya!

Are you referring to DragonLance, or Pern?
And, for that matter, if the animation is Pixar standards, or full CGI as in LotR, then it should STILL be okay.

See ya!

Animated movies can be good. Anyone remember Heavy Metal? Terrific film, lots of fun, and one heck of a cool soundtrack (and score).

One way or another, the dragons would have to be animated, unless the rumors of gene splicing are true. ;)

Always remember that the story is the main part of a film. Good animation or CGI can support that story, but won't take the place of it. There are a lot of fantasy and sci-fi tales that we'd all love to see in the theaters (or our home theaters), but we've seen too many of them butchered by Hollywood. That said, we've also seen it done right, though it's decidedly uncommon.

Keep your fingers crossed on this one. Oh, and I'd love a Pern film as well, and maybe an Elric movie while we're at it. While we're dreaming, maybe I can put in a vote for Kane the mystic swordsman from Karl Edward Wagner.

I read the "Harper Hall" Pern books, but oddly enough couldn't get into the DragonRider books.

It's ironic that the more creative and distinctive the background of a fantasy story, the less adaptable it becomes for the silver screen. The more explanation and exposition is needed to bring the audience up to speed, the less likely a studio is going to be to risk releasing the film. So "standard" sword & sorcery (or hack & slash) fantasy stories get made, and "non-traditional" fantasy stories don't. DragonLance is a specific series in a traditional fantasy setting, while Pern is non-traditional fantasy (or sci-fi, depending on which books you've read).

Broadness of appeal (also known as "accessibility") and prior/outside audience familiarity are two of the key factors in deciding whether or not a movie gets made. LotR and Narnia have both (Narnia less than LotR, IMO), so they got green-lighted -- LOTS of people read both series over a span of decades, and even people who didn't read them know OF them and what the general idea was. Pern and DragonLance were popular with a very limited audience, and have virtually no recognition beyond those audiences. Hopefully, the success of the LotR and Narnia movies will encourage studio executives to green-light more fantasy projects (like Blade and X-Men revived superhero movies).

Pern could be done pretty easy in the aspect of getting people up to speed, heck they do it now in just about every book. the little blurb in the begining about how it was human colonists how they lost there tech, and now have the danger of thread...

Think a SW type text scroll, or a Highlander type monologue over the same text, to give the back story. Sure you can't do it all, but there are ways to do it.

I have always liked Pern, and wouldn't mind a movie.

While i read Dragonlance in highschool, and would rent the movie or netflix it, i just don't see the draw it has to so many people. Parts of the Story were great but it some stuff i loath... (kinder and Tasselhoaf...)
