Who was the most dedicated player you ever met?

We had a guy, back in the late 70's who would roll up a D+D character but refuse to play it until he had found the 'perfect' figure. He'd paint it up and THEN allow himself to play it.
If he got killed, he would take the figure home and actually melt it on his cooker with a full 'ceremony'.

He always argued that because he had paid money for the fig (we were only about 13/14 and 35 pence was a lot for us), and spent the time painting it. He found that he played the character a lot more realistically, rather than the 'Gung Ho - Oh well I'm dead, I'd better roll up another one' approach that many of us did.
I can understand his idea, but waaaay to dedicated for me :)

Are you talking dedication or obsession?

I have a player that has written journal entries for all of his characters for the past 14 years!

www.nightwasp.com/daggerdale/journals For his latest

That is dedication.

My current players go the other way No Dedication. They spend little time on their characters (IMHO). Most seem to only to be interested in Ex.Pts. and Magic items.

They hate to fight or risk their PCs. Not much passion for the campain. (I have tried several diferent campains/senarios)

They are very competitive amoungst themselfs. (Nope they arent teenagers - more like 35-40)

They have a heavy computer/video game background. I'm guessing thats too blame. I don't think it's me :? as I have run these exact games before with very diferent results. (Players who really were happy)

Any thoughts????

Maybe it's Cheap but I Encourage Journal Writing by Giving "Token" Extra Experience for it, I Also Give Some Modest XP for Doing A Background and a Character Sketch before Entering a New Game Usually about 10% of the Next Level of Experience For Each... And roughly 2-5% for Journal Entries Depending on How High Level The Character (Higher Levels Get Lower Percentage)... I Just Think that it is Kewl to Have the Characters Start out with a Little Back Story, and an ongoing Story Line From the Perspectives of Each Player/ Character Can be Useful and Amusing... And it Is VERY Useful for Less Experienced Gamers...

I Guess it is a "Bribe"... But the Kewl Thing is when Someone Says "Oh man I Can't Draw, are you Really Going to Make me Do That?" And then after Grumbleing a Bit the Idea of Free XPs' Hits Home, They Do the Sketch... And BAM! It's Usually Better then they Intended, and It never Ceases to Amaze me at how those are the People Who Keep up with it, Modifying Their Drawing as They Get New Gear, Scars etc... It's Really Kewl...

Must be nice................. :? I get some players that don't care enough to buy their own dice. We end up giving out paper and pencils too. Bums.

Yes, well I Have Resigned myself to Pencils and Paper, I Keep Cheap Notebook Paper on Hand, and Buy Disposable Mechanical Pencils every So Often... As To Dice, there is One Advantage to Having Players use my Dice, At Least Less Go "Accidently" Missing...<Grin>...
