So...how many 1e players? 10 Years, 3 Months ago
I used to play 1st ed. before starting our current house rules. I never did play 2nd or 3rd, ed. What did they change or do??

I hear all kinda wild stuff. I understand they have a skill system now?

Any comments would be nice.

I guess add me to the 1ed list! :D I have little intrest in 2-3ed.

2e brought in a bevy of new classes, new milieus, etc. The essential mechanic was still the same.

"3e" is a ground-up rewrite of "Dungeons & Dragons" and has very little to do with the original game beyond stats that start in the 3-18 range bracket and terminology (Armor Class, Hit Points). So much so, in fact, that it makes little sense to call it "3rd edition": there is no bridge to AD&D; nor is there a bridge to D&D. So I myself call it "d20 Fantasy" since all it really is, is another d20 based game set in a fantasy realm.

I would have to disagree with that desription of 3E. While the system has been changed to a d20 system, it is still based on D&D and is a progression from AD&D. Moreso than 1E to 2E, but still a progression. I had misgivings at first, but would never want to go back.

I too play HackMaster. It is similar enough to 1e to be comfortable but it has lots of interesting new elements to make it more exciting for me.

I do agree with the other posters here though. Dragonsfoot is an excellent resource for 1e players. I really like it because it is easy to convert stuff to add into my HM campaign. 8)

I've played 3e. I can see its appeal for some but there was something that felt "not quite right" about if for me. YMMV.

Sorry, but I looked at (and played) d20 fantasy for quite a while and find it to be crap. It's links extend backwards tenuously to late 2e, but that's about it.

There are many "nuance" issues with d20 Fantasy as well.

I used to be a member of dragonsfoot.org. I don't go there anymore. Too many people there that are downright hateful towards 3E. Calling it "crap" is way out of line as far as I am concerned. I played 1E from 1980-2003. It was my primary system, but it is 2004 and time to move on. Yes, people don't want to keep buying books, but this is a hobby. If you don't want to support it. don't complain if it goes away. They survive by selling those books.

Time for you maybe; not for me. And the "downright hateful" started flowing from 3e a long time before 1e aficianados caught wind of it. Each new iteration of D&D has brought derision from bandwagoners who jump up and yip every time T$R or We Own The Competition bring out something new. "What? You're still playing 3.5? 3.51 is out, old fogie!" etc.

This "get with the times!" mentality sucks. My "hobby" went away the minute that bitch Lorraine Williams locked Gary's office and started sneering at role-players, period. I still support it though -- just not your chosen ruleset.

(EDIT: furthermore, you sure have done a 180'...do any of these ring a bell?):

Here ! Here! It is what I call "D&D" for 12 year olds! [...] 3E responds to these grown up children by giving them almost anything they want and adding politically correctness to a game that was never supposed to have any.

But...but I thought 3e was better because it was newer and better and we need to move on or else it'll all DIE, MAN!

I have had 1E players have a few items made like magical armor, but it was VERY expensive and rare. It also took at least 6 months to create them! I agree 3E had gotten crazy over this.

But it's better - how could it not be BETTER like this? It's newer! And better!

Why are we discussing how 3E would handle this on a 1E board? The answer is no, no add to saves.

Uh-oh! You're one of those mean old 1e hardheads in disguise! Aren't you?

I want what was promised me back in 1986! I am still waiting for my refund of that abortion of a 2E PHB!

Shouldn't you have moved on? To save the hobby from freezing to death and starving in the streets? It was NEW and BETTER than 1e! You said so! We should all move on!

I remember back in 1986 when this was the promised Second Edition. Not a whole new version but a consolidation of the various books with perhaps some minor revisions. You can image the look on my face at GenCON when I opened up that piece of garbage!

...etc.

 Wow! Delver with the Vorpal Holy Sword of Truth! I'll be staying out of this one personally, cuz I'm not going to research the quotes you support your argument with...but if you are accurate (and I have no reason to believe that you aren't at this point) it very much cuts the legs off of brvheart's crusade for 3E. I also refuse to join the 3E craze and would stand by you on principal. I have no problem with folks who want to play 3E, I'd just prefer that they would admit that it is a game and system unto itself and not waste their time trying to convince me to ride the latest wave. ;)

Yes, these are my statements from the past when I understood little of 3E. Once I played it longer and the fact that 3.5 has reduced many of the excesses, my position has evolved. Even an old grognard like myself can change. I am not on a crusade, but then I am not the one bad mouthing here am I?

Right, you're not on a crusade. You said the above, in a thread that's about 1e, and you're not on a crusade. Okay.

Gotcha.
