32mm on 25mm - Malifaux Style - Help! 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hey guys, I wanted to use some Steampunk Malifaux Miniatures with my game tiles. They are 32mm and I know DF is 25mm (1 inch)

Has anybody had any experience mixing these two in a game?

Does it mess up the flow of combat if the mini is off by a 1/4 inch? (tactics wise?)

Has anybody tried using 25mm bases with the Malifaux Minis?

Has anybody found any similar steampunk minis that DID work?

(I'll also start a new thread on Malifaux)

Thanks =)

For reference google image search for Malifaux Brass Arachnid (or just Arachnid)

I don't really have any direct experience with Malifuax, but I tend to follow a few rules of thumb on mixing scales:

  • Mixing machines and monsters is often fine.
  • Humans and demihumans usually need to be pretty close to whichever scale is your main or they look pretty off.
  • Objects are pretty variable, they aren't even always to scale for the one they are intended for so experiment.

That is pretty much how I handle it. Hope that helps!

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

Thanks LordDust! I hadnt even considered the type of mini compared to like types. You make an excellent point! Luckily the steampunk creations/devices will likley mesh well with the other minis (even if they are off the monsters will look that much more intimidating).

I was more worried that the extra 1/4 inch would take up too much board space and throw off combat but I suppose that can be played by ear considering if the mini is centered it would only be off by 1/8th inch on each side - not that much i'd gather.

Thanks again, and as always, if anybody else has any advice I'd appreciate it!

Would it help to put the 32mm mini on a 50mm base?

Something to consider about tactical impacts is that most combat systems have rules relating to size and size differences. You can usually pick a category for a given mini based on how it compares to the ones for your main scale.

Also, as jack pointed out, rebasing can help if the figure can fit onto a different base. If not, it isn't necessarily a big deal. The bulette mini from the D&D minis for example hangs off of the base they mounted it on. All three feet that are down creep over and one foot extends out ahead. The actual head overhangs the base by a bit more than an inch and the tail by an inch.

Some combat systems also cover something along the lines of melee range or "reach", so that might be another topic you could choose to address. If the mini reaches further out perhaps the beastie it represents can reach past the meatshields to get at the tender morsels in the middle?

The main thing is to make a decision on whichever rules you want to address and then stick to them during a session for fairness and to eliminate confusion. Make adjustments between sessions. At least, this seems to be the safest bet with house rules in my experience.

Just break the humans off those 30mm Artiste bases and get them onto 25mm / 1" bases. Most of the time the figs will seat just fine on a 25mm since the round black edges of the 30mm are generally empty space.

While the figs intended for 30mm bases are often taller, it seems they are less often bow legged / wide stanced than a lot of 25mm figs I've seem. Kinda funny how often 25mm - 28mm minis are trying their feet as far apart as they are tall.
