Not sure it is the case, but with the new SciFi sets being 50% off, it suggests at least a possibilty that they are not selling as well as hoped. I for one have 22 sets: 21 fantasy and 1 SciFi. Even our SciFi gamers are not realy crazy about using it. It has stayed in the box since purchase even though we play some SciFi d20.

Well, I see a point to brvheart's answer, but I think he is rushing his fences a bit with it though.
Fantasy MM has been out since 1997 and a few here are like me that started acquiring it within the first 12 months or so.
SF MM has been out about a year.
There is no way SF MM can build the same following in just a year versus eight years!

So, brvheart has informed us that he has a 22-to-1 ratio currently fantasy to SF.
Currently, I have eight fantasy/cavern sets to one SF set.
Yes, one set a year - there have been no great sales like the current one before to speed up my acquisitions - at least that I know of.
I hope I did not miss one - that would be really depressing!
Any way, give me a week and I will own eight fantasy/cavern sets to twelve SF sets.
Gotta love your sale Jeff!
Granted, I have also pursued the individual piece course.
I have about, now:~35, in-a-week:~55, fantasy/cavern piece sets
(sorry for the approx #s - it is really early/late in the morning)
of pieces I wanted more of that I did not want the whole set of.
That is about a four-to-one ratio for cavern-to-fantasy pieces since cavern pieces fit better into a SF setting than the set stone pieces.
Please Jeff! Individual SF Pieces! Pretty Please!
I see the sale on SF sets as a marketing tool so as to get way more exposure for the SF genre MM.
That way more SF gamers can actually see them frequently used well in sufficient quantity to do something "real" with them.

Why do brvheart's SF gamers shy away from SF MM?
Because he does not have enough SF MM to do anything with!
The SF gaming community has to see the product en masse to really understand its utility.
I have an underground/cave vehicle complex I have designed that I am only waiting for the pieces to take the pics of it for here.
Creative settings like that will improve SF MM's exposure and make it much more appealing to the SF gaming community.
The "rabbit warren" scenes that too many have shown here on the Forums with their SW pieces just do not show SF MM in its best light.
Granted, I really like the utility shown in L's set-ups that used a combo of cavern and SF pieces, but they are not enough.
Is there anyone else here that has sufficient SF MM able to do a focused creative setting that would work for the SF gaming community - both for the RPs and the WGs?
It would be better than just I doing something.
Cannot one of you SW enthusiasts do some decent setting from the SW movies to show the SF MM sets capabilities?
I am talking a flight deck, a command center or some other recognizable setting from any of the SW flicks.
I am talking set-ups with X-Wings, Y-wings, speeders, etc. that can show off SF MM in its best SW light.
Anyone?

Unfortunately, because DF SF MM line is devoid of SF furnishings for it, for my setting, I will have to use paper furnishings from Worldworks' First Light set and the plastic pieces from my Platformer and Hexagon sets from Russia's Technolog plastic terrain system when I do the pics.
Platformer and Hexagon pieces are imported Stateside by Imex Model Company for use with their Robogear wargame.
i-Kore in Scotland also imports them into the UK for use with their Void1.1 wargame.
i-Kore is even having a contest to see who can come up with the best Technolog set up for Void1.1.

Sorry folks, y'all will have to wait to see the Ainsty stuff in SF MM.
It will not be here until early May at the rate things are going with some in my local gaming group.
Spouses, April tax filings and so forth are making things slow and very "interesting".
Such is life at times among friends and associates.
I will do pics then too.

My point here is that writing off SF MM already is a severe disservice to DF, SF gaming and SF MM!
I have been waiting for SF MM almost since I first bought fantasy MM, which I have been using in SF situations.
I want to see much more SF MM coming down the pike Jeff & Stefan!

Well, I've done my best to show off SF sets -- you may not recall, RF, but I used the old Galoob "Action Fleet" ships to flesh things out. Some of my older pics have X-Wings, A-Wings, AT-STs, Imperial shuttles (way out of scale, of course) and a few other ships thrown about.

But you're right that my displays are small. I have 2 starters, 2 alpha sets, and now recently 1 passage set. Sadly, I need to show restraint with the SF stuff. I have a huge toy collection, a huge fantasy minis collection, a MASSIVE fantasy DF collection, and a lot of buildings made from HA Castlemolds (including a huge modular "ruins of Osgiliath" collection)

I simply don't have room to start anything new. I plan to get at least 1 of each SF set, maybe two. But even with the recent sale, I had to show restraint. I simply don't have room to build a SF collection that rivals my fantasy one, and I prefer fantasy at the end of the day.

Plus, I have to leave room for future fantasy sets (that lake and river needs to go SOMEWHERE after all) and, of course, Dark World. If DW ever gets off the ground, and looks as good as the proto sketches indicated, I may lose my sense of restraint and go nuts. That will at least work with fantasy and SF, so it kind of adds to both collections.

Anyway, I'd love to see someone post pics of the sorts of displays the official DF folks have put up -- massive SF displays with tons of rooms and corridors. Of course, the admin. is probably unlikely to use rival companies' products to flesh out the displays, so I guess to that I say: Make some of your own! I'd be happy to get consoles, cryo tubes, maintenance bays, storage lockers, med labs, and cyber bars from DF, if only they'd make 'em! (remember, my restraint is limited to the "one of each" rule -- if you start making a lot of different things, I'll just have to buy one of each and still get to tell my wife I'm showing restraint!)

What a long post with pretty much no point. Hm.

Well I did have one of them that was going to buy 4 sets, but his sister needed her computer fixed. I don't know that it is because we only have one SciFi set though, they are young and don't have the patience to do the setups even when they are running fantasy. He is the only one of the SciFi group that really likes DF.
I don't know the reason for why the SciFi sets are on sale, but it does give that impression. For those that wish to have more I hope they do continue to make them. Personally, I don't care for the new $50 sets. You end up paying more per piece as I see it.

I did not see those pics.
Do you happen to have any 25-28mm SW models to make some in-scale pics?

But you're right that my displays are small. I have 2 starters, 2 alpha sets, and now recently 1 passage set. Sadly, I need to show restraint with the SF stuff. The idea is not massive displays, but ones that someone would really use in a role-playing or wargaming session/event.
Those huge "rabbit warrens" that DF does are not worth the time it took to think of them, let alone to build them, is a total waste of time!
Let me harp again on the need for theme again and again!

The order I ordered was showing restraint.
The list of what I wanted to get from DF was three to four times what I bought.
The sale is just SSOOO great!

The sketches just remind me too much of GW's 40K settings.
I went through my GW phase back in 1994-1998.
Fortunately, I woke and returned to quality wargaming.

I HATE DF's massive displays.
There is no theme to them and thereby pretty worthless.
All they say is, "Look what you can do if you have unlimited funds."
That sounds like a very small market to me and a good way to go out of business.
They should hire IO and Tom of France to design displays for them.
Those men understand how a theme really makes a display great!

What a long post with pretty much no point. Hm.

What do mean no point?!?
You talked of:
what you have done on this forum before;
you desire for the Dark World MM to come out;
the limitations you operate under as far as toy and DF acquisitions.

Did I miss anything?

1) I most profoundly agree that patience is lacking in the up and coming generations.
The real solution to the SF MM problem for your area is to get enough SF sets in use so that the SF group can see how cool the SF MM really is.
Gaming materials only sell well via in-person visuals.
That is why the most successful gaming stores have some seriously large displays of painted minis and models in house.

2) I firmly believe the sale is marketing tool.
2a) Remember that SF MM is not the only thing on sale.
Cavern pieces are on sale too along with a variety of fantasy pieces.
2b) As far as SF MM is concerned, I firmly believe it is an attempt to increase exposure of the product through the increased sales so as to increase sales at suggested retail price later.
2c) In addition, I think this is also a fluid capital gathering so that DF will be able pay for the order of the following sets and pieces for this Spring and Summer: Dark World, SF Beta, and the summer Fantasy restock.
Remember Stefan's comments a month or so back about DF being capital poor; a lot of gaming industry companies, epecially ones in America, have that serious problem.
The UK is more of a captive market with their TV tax, the few TV stations and the enormous cost of cable and such.
This means the UK companies are a lot less cash-strapped than the US ones because they have a much less distracted market.

3) I do not care for the $50 sets either brvheart, but I have worked in the gaming industry so I know why they exist.
The $50 sets are designed as a "parent trap."
In the gaming industry, you really have to pay attention to the people who actually hold the purse strings, which are usually the parents.
It is a lot easier for a child(tweeny or teenager) to convince their parents to spend $50 than $60+.
What would be nice brvheart, if DF had the capital to do so, that there would be two lines of sets: $50 Beginner & Intermediate sets and the $75-$200 Advanced sets.
That way DF could appeal to all of the potential customers of various economic backgrounds.

Actually, I am thinking more and more that my above #2 in its entireity is the reason behind the sale.
I just went back through the DF WEB site.
Only the few Fantasy kits still in stock and two of the accessory sets are not on sale.
Everything else in stock is on sale especially loose pieces.
Take a look!

I hope this sale is not the end of loose piece availability.
I like that choice with MM.
It could be though.

RF --
I see what you're saying. I thought you were just speaking of size. I think it would be challenging to make a themed display of SF DF right now, since there is little in the way of official accessories.

I have very few SW vehicles in scale with 25-30mm, but there are some. The Hasbro Sandcrawler, I posted pics a few months ago, is just about perfect scale, but very pricey. The Action Fleet things, some are quite right -- the landspeeder, the snowspeeder, the A-Wing. These things work very well at this scale.

I'll find some old pics and post them later tonight. And I'll post some pics of a new display I put together, I'm very happy with it. It's a kind of outpost, with tower made from passage pieces.

(oh, and I said the post had no point because it was all over the place and struck me as somewhat meandering)
