So I have one of these but I am not exactly sure what I am supposed to be using it for. What do people ususally use these pieces for?

One of the early gripes about DF was that it was not sufficiently flexible with regard to things like door placement and so on due to it's inflexible 2" baseline footprint on all pieces. The advanced builder set lets you do things that you coulds not easily before (place a door centered in a 20 foot wall for instance), the 30 foot halls save having to plop down 3 pieces to cover the same distance. In short, the main thing in my practice the AB set allowed was dropping the minimum distance increment of construction from 10 feet to 5 feet ( scale ) without having to break out a hacksaw and make my own conversions.

Between the, The Long Corridor Pieces, The Half Walls, and the Extenders, there really Would Seem To Be some Added Flexibility... Oh... And there Are some Small Doors and Dead Ends too? Yes? (Still Don't own One of these, though it is On The List. I Do have a Few "Extra" Individual Pieces though and they are a Nice addition to my Other Pieces)... But one of my Favorite Uses for the Half Walls is For Giving some Flexability to the Use of the Alcoves...

The Advanced Builders set is one of my favorite sets because it also allows you to build more compact dungeons than you normally could build without it. While the standard fantasy sets are great for building large expansive dungeons, when you're trying to build the interior of a house or a basement they're a little too expansive to be believable (unless the house happens to be a TARDIS that's currently disguised as a house). The advanced builders set makes it much easier to build compact structures that don't have any space in between their corridors, with 5' wide doorways instead of 10' wide and a number of small niches that are great for adding details (like jail cells) to your dungeons.

Tomgar,

Good Point... How Many Sets do you Suggest one might Need to Efectively Accomplish that?

I've only got one advanced builders set as of yet but I plan on buying another one in the near future, mainly for the small doors and 1" half walls and half corner sections (which among other uses allow you to put doorways closer to corners). I've actually never had a problem accomplishing what I wanted with just the one set (plus my other sets), but it will be nice to have some extra walls sections and doors since I really don't like the 2" wide doors.

You do have to play around with a few of the pieces to figure out exactly how you're supposed to use them, but once you get the hang of it you probably won’t build another dungeon that doesn’t have at least a few Advanced Builders set pieces in it.

Interesting... You Know I am Not Sure when DF stopped Adding Printed Set up Sheets in their Sets, I Guess when they Finally Got online... But it seems like it would be a useful thing to start doing again... For just this sort of Discussion...

The Advanced Builder set is really good for filling in spots where the "normal" shaped pieces don't work. Sometimes you just need a 2" x 1" floor piece or a half wall. It also works well with the narrow passages set.

This is about my favorite set. It's not flashy, but the pieces it has allows me to concentrate on building what I want and not having to change my designs to use the sized pieces that are in the other sets.

I find the advanced builder set very useful (I have two) for making rooms, passages, etc. approximate the correct size or fit the correct shape I'm trying to create when making dungeons per a map in a published D&D adventure or when trying to make an unusual set up or combine different elements together.

The ABS is an odd duck. On the one hand, it's extremely useful, and I almost always find myself needing at least one piece from it. Until it was made, it was a legitimate flaw in the DF design that you were so limited about things like door placement. The ABS not only fixes that, it generally provides interesting options, like putting small rooms in places they couldn't have existed before.

At the same time, as has been said, it's not flashy. When I bought it, there wasn't the thrill of getting spiral staircases, or the demon archway, or the lava fountain, or the cavern passages. It's not a very exciting set, but it is a great set. I have one, because I don't have room or money for ALL the DF I want, but it's a set I daydream about getting more of....

(actually, it's one of the few sets that I would like to see in the new approach -- $50 for a smaller box instead of $120 for a huge one -- I'd like to buy SOME of the ABS again, but I can't bring myself to buy the whole thing at once again)

Why not just buy the exact pieces you need? It is sold as individual pieces. Plus that way you do not have to pay the big costs. I purchased the additional components I wanted beyond the 017 set instead of buying another whole set. Sorry, I just do not have any use for those little doors.
