After building my own dungeon pieces using Hirst Blocks, I've really come to see how unnecessary the bowtie connectors are IF the dungeon pieces are square. Unfortunately most Dwarven Forge pieces are not quite square, so without the bowtie connectors holding them all close to each other you end up with a misshapen dungeon with wavy walls and lots of gaps in between tiles.

The Sci-fi sets are more square than the fantasy sets so you don't really need the bowties to hold them together while you straighten everything up.

I don't know if it's an issue limited to a few pieces or if the prototypes were off, but I've got some truly crooked Dwarven Forge pieces in my collection.

From this moment, I will stand for the opposite of killing, gnodab."

IO,

As to These Points being Covered already, Although they Have it is Probably Just as well That Someone Bring it up again once in a While, as undoubtedly there are Plenty of Browsers that Will Never Look through the Hundreds of Pages of Chat for these Answers... So, here my Take on your Three Queries...

1) I Am Torn on the Bow-tie Issue, I Think that the Stuff Looks Better with it, But Since I Usually Build as I Go, (Unless there is a Complicated Layout), it is faster FOR ME, (I Stress that because Others Have Commented that Bow-ties do not Slow them Down), to not use the Conecetors... Except for Who ever it was, (Maybe Brvheart?), that suggested Using them as Debris sprinkled about where stones and such may have fallen from the Ceiling... I do use them for that Now...

2) I Have Not Painted a Single Piece of My Own Terrain since Purchasing my First Set of DF... But as Folks are already Offering, there are "Formulas" and Mehodes to doing so... (I Think that I remember some fairly Detailed Procedures being discussed on the HA site)... That having Been Said, I am With you in that I think an Official DF Color Scheme Paint Set would be Great... I Do not really Believe that it would undermine their business in any way...

3) I Guess I sorta' Covered that for myself in Number 1... I Generally Build Simple Stuff as I Go... Some times for Larger Rooms, I'll separate the Pieces I'll need ahead of Time, then Shoo everyone away when I need a Few Minutes to Build... Though I Have heard some Great Solutions to the Issue of Meta-gaming, Including the Use of Everything from Towles, to Construction Paper to Cardboard to Cover Sections... Some Folks have said that they Pre-Build, but Do Not Place any Details in the Areas until they are "Discovered", and Some one Started a Great Discussion in aPast by Suggesting that Larger Rooms can be Pre-built, BUT Changing Just a Couple of Features Heare and there to Keep people from becoming Too Complacent that they Know the Lay of the Land... Also If it is a "Known" area to the Players I will Usually just go ahead and Lay it out...

Just to weigh in, for a while I did without the bowtie clips, but now I positively love them. Dunno, just changed my mind gradually. I think it really helps with the overall stability of the dungeon.

The bowties suck and are completly unesessary. In addition the pieces in room sets are to modular. I am planning to glue 4 pieces together and greanstuff in the places where the bowties should be. the cavern set is the best set upp to date do to the fact that the pieces are bigger. the benieft of removing the bowties is also two fould since it becomes more beutifull to set upp multie-level setupps.

the fact that they have done so in the past is no reason to not change things to the better. Lets face it most companies acctualy uses this curcumstanses to "force" custumors to buy new products and i am refering to WoC who realese new D&D rules which are little modified (3,5) and games workshop who make new minis and consider it a reason to increase the prices... all togehter remove the tie connectors and consider it a reason to increase the prices do to higher "producing" cost.

Then to another topic: I want fantasy product news!!!

please

I've often thought that DF should sell "half-bowtie" patch pieces that match the color and texture of the floors and perfectly plug up the bowtie holes.

Then the DF users who don't like the bowtie connections could buy a bag of these plugs, and glue them into the bowtie holes, creating smooth floors for their sets.

Transit,

As has been discussed here before, Some ideas for that came in the form of Cutting the bowties in half. Another Idea was to use putty or similar, to plug up the Gaps... Peronally if I ever get around to the Idea of Making up some rooms and Gluing them together, (Maybe use Balsa to base them, but then I would have to Base ALL of my Pieces, which would make Stacking even less attractive), Anyway then I would certainly just glue the Bow-ties in place for added support if nothing else...

Well, like I stated I don’t use the bow-tie pieces. When we first got our DF stuff I put together a simple maze and put the ties in place. The first thing I noticed was that they all didn’t lie flat anyway. Secondly if I remember correctly reading something DF said about velvet to velvet contact that’s why the pieces have it on the bottom eliminating the need for the ties. So I upholstered our game table with black velvet, and honestly the pieces stuck like glue. I haven’t gotten around to upholstering our new table yet but will in the future. An alternative to this is just upholster a flat piece of plywood (I recommend marine grade plywood (nice and flat)) with the velvet to the size of your liking, or several small say 2’ x 3’ plates you could have set aside hidden until they hit the table.

I’m a build as we encounter DM, so again the ties are just one extra little duty my already impatient players would be waiting for me to finish before they get to smash some monsters. I have to agree; Say your party finds its way into a random cavern filled with Drow. Two leap forward and the mistress beings to weave a spell! Now stop it will take me 20 minutes to set up :? . It’s a let down and player’s grumble. So I usually have several planed encounter plates set aside to drop on the table like a  birthday cake of doom  , anything else I keep simple and quick. 8)
