I’m new around here so these points may have raised in the past, so at the expense of sounding like the uninformed new guy. :)

1. Do you feel as I that there is absolutely no reason for the plastic bow-tie clips? I guess this is why the Sci-Fi sets don’t have them?

2. Have you ever tried to color-match a dungeon accessory like the stone around a Grendel model doorway to your DF stuff? A set of color-match DF paints would be nice for adding accessories. :D

3. In a night’s adventure do you set up the entire dungeon, or do you just set up the area of the encounter as they come along?

Some of it has been up before, but you may have to look for quite awhile before you find the answers...

1. I can live without the bow-ties, although the bow-ties seem to help with the smaller pieces. The only reason why I use them for the cavern sections is to fill the holes.

2. There are a number of strategies for colour matching. I'm using the following formula: black undercoat, drybrushed Codex Gray, followed by drybrushed Rotting Flesh. I sometimes add a little brown to the mix for variety. I know that others have their own solutions.

3. Strictly for minis. No role-playing for me.

These have been discussed before, so if you browse around you can probably find a LOT more being said...but here's my two cents....

I personally like the bowties -- they give the floor a neat pattern, and I like the stability they create. True, you can rearrange individual sci-fi pieces more easily without them. But you can move whole ROOMS around with them -- just shift with your hand and most pieces stay in the right position. Without the ties, it's much harder. I don't miss them in the sci-fi sets, and the design would have made them really ugly, but I don't mind them in the fantasy sets, either. I guess I'm just noncommittal -- they're neat, but I wouldn't be too upset if they were phased out.

As for painting -- yes, some of us use a lot of our own stuff, either scratchbuilt or from other companies like Grendel. I begin with black primer, so it's nice and flat and black. Then I drybrush a mixture of grey and brown, light brown, gradually lighter and lighter. Sometimes, the top level is a mix of brown and yellow and white, just for the very, very last stage of drybrushing. It's actually not THAT hard, even though at first you may need to use some trial 'n' error. But once you get the hang of it, it's surprsingly easy to at least approximate the right color. I wouldn't say I've painted pieces that look like DF painted them, but they certainly don't leap out as wrong. If you scroll through the photos pages, you'll find a lot of Grendel in my pics (also Tom, who is the MASTER of painting Grendel pieces and using them to spectacular effect)

Well-- I like the bowties... its some sort of "I have done it feeling", because I always apply them when the dungeon/building is done...

and yes - moving structure around with them is really nice...

I paint as I like - and not always for matching colors of DF... so I dont care ;-) some of my furniture thingies I had before I bought DF

As for the building... I build the dungeons in advance and put some black sheets on the sections - then I remove the sheets as they explore them...

I use the bowties because I prefer them over the look of a bowtie hole in the floor... it seems like a simple solution to the problem of holding the pieces together and works prettygood for me.

There was one fellow who actually sawed all his bowties in half and glued the halves into the slots in a previous discussion on this topic, I'm not quite there yet, but coming up on it at a pretty good pace.
