I use two tables: one as a "prep" table that has the entire layout constructed and covered. Then I move pieces over to the "play" table as needed. This way I can quickly transfer DF tiles without having to look at a map or re-orientate myself. Added bonus: allowing the players to look back at all they've been through when they reach their goal, rather than seeing what all lies ahead of them.

Had my first session with my sets last night and I think it went well. We ended up only building an encounter at a time, in neither case did meta-gaming issues come up.

Encounter one: travelling down a lavaworks/canal system. [We had earlier found the control system and had turned off some flows/re-enabled other flows and were now walking from the control area back to a dwarven city that used the lava for power, and was currently under duerger occupation.]

Simple setup, a series of HS floor tiles flanked by wall pieces on each side ie a 20' wide canal with a 10' walkway on each side, straight ahead no curves, etc. (Had we thought about it more, I should have stacked something under the walls to help show the 20' drop from the walkway to teh floor of the canal (currently only a trickle of lava due to our manipulations)

My character was out ahead scouting, heard an oncoming patrol, and tried(successfully) to climb partially down the edge of the canal and hide until they passed, then we caught them between me and the party and took them out.

No meta-gaming issues to worry about, but also tactically rather uninteresting and the terrain didn't add much.

Encounter 2: Reach the occupied dwarven city, the two residential quarter were empty. Headed towards the great hall area since we saw scuff marks leading that way. While the DM was out of the room taking a bathroom break, the party assembled the encounter the way we wanted it :) He then came back and tweaked it some. A large plaza area (2 DoE:WA floor tiles), bounded by walls, two small alleyways where we started, a locked door at the far end and some raised platforms/interior walls to provide cover for their defenses. Some of the space behind the doors was built out. Again, we didn't seem to run into any meta-gaming problems, in fact we played pretty poorly -- even knowing that something bad was going on behind the locked doors, we concentrated on taking out the defenders rather than getting the doors open and then prioritizing our actions.

I'm still looking forward to a campaign, or one-off that I run and can do some preplanning and larger at once pre-build.

For some reason I have dozens of comic book backing boards left over from my comic colleccting days, and so I use them to cover my setups. They're usually big enough that by the time I have the layout covered the whole table looks like white cardboard. Plus they're rigid enough that you can't tell where there are corridors or where there are rooms so metagaming is kept to a minimum. The added bonus is that I can pull the boards off one at a time so I can control what's revealed and when. A tip for anyone who might try this is when you're covering your setup, start at the ends and work your way back to the beginning so that the boards are easier to remove as the players advance. If you start at the beginning the boards will overlap in an awkward way.

While I wait for my DF Tiles to arrive, I've been thinking about the setup. Hows this for an idea? Prebuild each area and use Velcro to attach to a base. Run corridor as needed, when reaching an area, just plop your already set Tiles down !

Welcome to the DF forum buppers!

I'm not sure I understand your proposal. For myself, I have DF pieces laying on different sizes of masonite wood board that I bring to the gaming table when needed.

Good ideas! I like the idea of having individual areas and bringing them out pre-assembled.

I've tried the preset it up and them they only get to 10% of it and it is a lot more time building and taking down so I build as I go. Been doing it so long it doesn't take that long anymore. takes them about as long to draw it out on the map which we use most of the time. I only use DF for special occasions any more.

Piecemeal assemble dungeon rooms on top of a small piece of felt, covered by felt. As dungeon reveals, slide the assembly into place.

If a group strongly prefers the tiles, threatening to run the combat purely narrative might be strong enough deterrent not to metagame too much.

And of course, until the players get line of sight, nothing is set in stone. And after that, there are illusions, sliding walls, cave ins, force fields and a host of ways of modeling non euclidean geometry.

I'm new to df, but I was thinking about putting black construction paper over the map and uncovering what they have seen as they go

I set up the whole dungeon, cover it with pieces of black cloth...1 cloth for each "area" depending on line of sight...for instance, a long corridor, 1 cloth, when it bends, another cloth, comes to a room, another cloth, etc....sometimes, a secret door is encountered, i might build that part right there when it is discovered...good time for a bathroom/cigarette/sandwich break....
