TOPIC: Tried to start slow…fell in the deep end

Tried to start slow…fell in the deep end 2 Years, 7 Months ago
My original plan was to inquire on the forum as to what the best 3-4 sets are for a new collector. However, after perusing a few years of forum posts, I found a wealth of advice already posted on the topic. My thanks to the DF community for all the helpful suggestions! Ultimately, my careful research was for naught as I simply couldn’t limit myself to 4 sets. Instead, I dove head-first into “the addiction” with a larger than expected purchase.

As I anxiously await the April 19th shipment, I’m already planning a summer purchase (got to snag some RotA 2 sets as soon as they’re back in stock). To round out my next order I’m debating whether to purchase sets I know will get a lot of use in my current campaign or sets that may be out of print soon. I was hoping some of you guys who have been around a while could answer a few questions to help with my decision.

1.Is there any way to tell how many sets of a LE run are remaining? I’m particularly interested in how many DoE (room, expansion, and WA) may be left.

2.How often do re-stocks happen?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer the newbie!

Hey Feymous!
Welcome to the addiction!
I'll try to answer your questions.
1. There is really no way to tell how many of the LE sets are still available short of asking Stefan or Jeff in this forum.

2. As Jeff and Stefan wrote in another thread they are planning on getting a restock in April. They usually restock once every 6 months.

I am looking forward to seeing some of your setups.

As someone with *very* limited monetary resources, my tactic has been to get a few sets of the dungeon stuff (room and passage set, room set) so it can fit just about any "generic" need and from there I've mostly focused on the limited sets so I don't miss out. Its served me well so far- I've only missed out on the DOE room & passage set and the RotA pre-order goodies. And luckily, the new DoE expansion set comes out on my birthday!

You can sometimes figure out how many sets are left with the shopping cart. It let me put in exactly 53 sets of the DOE WA. When I tried to put in even one more, it said they would notify me when it was back in stock, so its likely there are exactly 53 sets left :-)

So - what did you end up getting for your first purchase???

Dwarf, Granpappy, and Harneloot – Thanks for the responses. Seems that if a LE set is something I’d be sad to miss out on, I’d best order it sooner rather than later.

My recent order (a.k.a. my plunge into the nerd crack addiction) consisted of the following:

- Room
- Room and Passage
- Narrow Passage (not the most visually stunning set and probably one I would have passed over if not for all the forum posts regarding the versatility it adds to basic room sets)
- Advanced Builder (another set I would have passed over if not for recommendations on the forum)
- Wicked Additions 1 & 2
- Fantasy Floor
- 6”x 6” square floors (6 pack)
- 2x Set of 2 large columns
- 2x Cavern
- Cavernous Passage
- Cavernous River and Walls
- 2x Realm of the Ancients
- Tavern and Medieval Furniture Accessories

This is technically my second order and adds to 2 each of the Woodlands and Woodland accessories I purchased last month. At the time I discovered DF almost all the Classic Dungeon sets, including Rooms, were out-of-stock. The woodland motif fit with my upcoming campaign settings and since the composition of pieces is almost exactly the same as the Classic Dungeon Room I figured it would give me a good sense of the size/shape/number of rooms that can be created with one room set.

I read every review I could find before making my first purchase and never saw a negative comment about the quality of DF. Even after all the glowing reviews I was amazed by how beautiful the pieces are; a picture simply can’t do them justice. Then I started playing around with them…took me all of 15 minutes to know this was going to become a significant investment for me :)

Just wait, the addiction gets even deeper....
Soon you will be perusing ebay and game stores for Grendel pieces and other accessories to decorate your DF layouts. Then there is the obsession for finding the out of production items like Ogre's Den.
But it looks like it is too late for you.....Stefan can add your name to his ever growing list of entusiasts. Have fun and welcome to the addiction!

I don't think you have to worry about any of the limited edition sets right now. I have to look it from the opposite site - what do I order for Europe and what will enough people buy - so I'm following all the sets very closely myself.

So here is my advice for the sets:

DoE Room and Passage Set (sold out, won't come again)
DoE Room Set (likely the next to go - this set would be my priority if you fear not to get a set anymore - watch out if it is announced that the last batch is produced, DoE Extension will likely speed up sales of this set)
DoE Wicked Addition (a later set and still enough available - still need to order this set for Europe)
DoE Extension (out in February in Europe, arriving in the US soon, still lots of time to get it)

DoE Hellscape - also pretty new set - still lots of time

RotA (possibly after the DoE Room Set the one that might go next. Should there be a RotA3 then pick one up quickly)
RotA2 (RotA will be first - so only worry once this one is gone)

Woodland Set (difficult to predict - limited to only 1000 - but still very new set so should be around a little bit longer)

Individual (collector) pieces
RotA entrance (in my view the most pretty piece yet - just gone)
Nest (seems less sought after - but better take one while they are available)
Stalagmite and Ice Dragon (specials for the Ice Cavern. Grep them when they become available)
DoE 6inch corridor (there is A LOT of demand for this. I expect it will be gone very, very quickly as this is a piece that collectors want but also that hard core users can use as multiples. I have many of my customers asking me for this one and I contemplate how best to ensure that all early customers of the DoE Extension that didn't bought 3 sets get one).

In regard to other sets - they should all come back - eventually. But some might take longer as others.

Thod,
Thanks for the detailed advice. It will be helpful in prioritizing my purchases…although there is a high probability I will simply end up overspending again rather than carefully choosing a few select sets ;)
