Storage options 3 Years, 2 Months ago
I've been looking around for the best storage option--going from 7 sets for years to 15 makes space saving more of an issue.

I see plenty of raving in old posts about the Sterilite 7 drawer carts which appear to have been available at Target up to a year ago, but they seem to be unavailable.

Sterilite doesn't even list them on their website, and instead have a new 7 drawer cart with 4 small (presumably perfect for DF like the old ones) and 3 big drawers--looks like you could stack pieces three deep in the latter. Still, would require some careful packing and as it's much bigger, not so handy for transport.

Anyone tried this new one, or are there better options out there?

So far I have been keeping my pieces in their original boxes, but that is depressing, and they are so cumbersome to get to that they don't see much daylight as often as I would like. Storage for me has to be totally accessible, and that is why I have thought about putting up shelves or a shelving unit to simply keep the pieces on. There are just so many problems with that. Transportation, room for the shelves, and my biggest one...dust! Ugh, I couldn't stand having to dust all of those pieces. As my username suggests, I have a ton of Lego sets on shelves all over my room and the basement on shelves, and dust is terrible. That Sterilite 7 drawer cart was the cart of my dreams. When my new sets arrive, I'm not sure how I am going to store them.

I currently keep mine still in their original boxes but much the same as LegoRick they dont get used as much as they should due to being awkward to get out all the time and put away.

I use some of the Really Useful Boxes boxes for storing other gaming things but haven't tried them for DF products, might have to give it a bash.

Wow those are nice. I'm going to have to do some investigating with them, so I've added that page to my 'Favorites'. Thanks for the heads up.

(wow, that is one long URL!)

I just got into DF, and I also just bought this storage rack. It is about 4 feet tall with wheels. I can roll it around the table and pull out the drawers I need. I have found it handy.

Edit: For some reason the URL is not working, despite being cut and pasted right over. If you go to www.target.com do a search for "rolling storage 15 drawer" and check out the first item that comes up.

I had been storing my pieces in bins, but from now on I'm keeping the original packaging. I moved across the country (well, from the northeast to the south) back in August, and during the move some of my boxes musta taken quite a hit. I opened a bin with a mix of cavernous pieces in it last night and -- o the horror! Many straight and cavernous walls from the river set were snapped right in half, some of my curved cavernous corners were pulverized. I was able to glue things back together, but you can still see a crack and some of the glue seeped through and left a glossy sheen that doesn't look right. There were some pieces pulverized beyond repair, like the stalagmites around the base of the large plateau that comes with the chasm set. And just about everything in the box had small chips and places where the paint had been worn away.

Luckily, many other boxes have survived. But I'm going to have to do a very methodical search through my inventory to see what needs repairing and what needs outright replacing. Which doubly sucks, because I don't really have time. Two young kids at home, full-time job, things simply aren't as they were back in 2003. :P

Dayum. Well, here's to March 2012 when cavernous things come back in stock! sigh
