Realm of the Ancients--Did I Make a Mistake? 3 Years, 3 Months ago
Some of you folks may remember my recent thread about making my first Dwarven Forge purchase.

I was originally contemplating getting some of the Classic Dungeon Sets, but I ended up purchasing Realm of the Ancients sets instead because:

(1) they look awesome
(2) the Wicked Addition sets for the Classic Dunegon line which add so many cool pieces are out of stock

Now, though, I'm wondering if I've made a mistake.

Don't get me wrong, I'm totally happy with the quality of the RotA sets. I mean, here is what I, a complete noob to DF, was able to construct on my first attempt:

It's definitely as pretty as I had hoped!

However, now that I've had a few weeks to experiment with it, I'm realizing that it's not very diverse.

I was originally put off a bit by the basic Classic Dungeons sets because they're so plain. Now, though, I'm starting to think that plainness is actually a *plus*. With the right accessories, you can turn the Classic Dungeon sets into a temple, or a castle, or a tavern, or a crypt, or a wizard's tower.

The RotA sets don't seem to have that same flexibility--primarily because they have so much extra detail.

So, now I'm thinking of returning the RotA sets and going back to the Classic Dungeon line.

What do you folks think? Does my point of view have merit, or will more time with the RotA sets reveal a flexibility that I haven't realized yet?

I agree that RotA (and DoE) sets are not as versatile as the Classic dungeon sets. I have made the same point about the stark simplicity of the Classic line more than once in the past.

But I also think you have some quaint notions about what constitutes a valid reason to return/exchange merchandise.

You have had the sets for weeks, opened the boxes and played with the pieces, praise the appearance and quality, but feel that you made a poor choice for versatility -- a personal and subjective judgement. You received value for your money, so in my book you need to live with your choice and move on.

This is not money poorly spent. RotA is a good line, and proper accessorizing should also render the environments that you want.

And if you can't make it work, and if you can't exchange/return the sets through DF, you can always sell them online and probably recoup most of what you spent.

No, I don't work for DF.

Do you see those elegant canine statues in that picture you posted? They were lithe demon statues that didn't look anything like canines at all a few weeks ago. This week, those statues are going to be indicative of a mural in a library. The well of souls from DoE:WA is going to be a fountain of swirling magical energy, too.

Imagination is an incredible thing. Don't let the visual details overcome yours. Rather, use them as place marks for what *you* envision them to be.

You bought a kick ass product. From the looks of it, you got a rather healthy start, too. Be proud, and happy with, what you got! :)

Definitely keep your RotA sets! The dungeon line is incredibly versatile (an should definitely be a big chunk of your next purchase), but nothing beats the WOW factor of using a gorgeous, detailed set like RotA or DoE when the time is right.

Well, I wish you would have made the point one more time when I was asking for advice on which sets to buy, LOL.

Hmm, not sure why you say that. Most internet-only sellers of luxury goods that can't be easily "experienced" except in person offer pretty liberal return policies.

Anyway, I've sent an email to DF for clarification on the matter so I'll at least know what my options are.

I don't think buying a limited edition set is ever a bad idea. It's better to get it now while it's
normal price than 2 years from now at probably double. Sure ROTA may lack some versatility but
it makes up for it in its unique beauty. No matter what you buy from dwarven forge it probably
wont be enough and you will be left wishing your had more of something else.

Dwarven forge is the one of the nicest, most customer friendly companies I've ever
seen. They would probably take the sets back but I personally wouldnt ask them to.

Hang in there an buy some more sets.

While we're talking RotA.

Would 2 of each sets be enough to have a goodly amount to add in some variation and handle a fair sized area?

Is there a better ratio like 2:1 set one to two or whatever?

I'm thinking my main set would be the basic, but I'd like to get enoough of this stuff before it's gone.

My rule of thumb is two sets of any limited series, unless I really like it or I want a promotional item offered with pre-order. But I try to order the same number of each set in a limited line.

Ordering in equal numbers helps out DF, as they tend to order the same number of each set in a limited line. When people buy two main sets and one wicked set, it leaves them with a stock of "leftover" wicked sets.

My vote is to keep the RotA sets and simply save up for some classic dungeon pieces - my best guess is the WA set will be back in stock in August but I have no inside knowledge of that :-)

Grab a Room Set and WA2 set now and a WA1 & WA3 set at the end of the summer...throw a R&P set in there and you are really off and running!

So Ebonsword, what did you decide to do?

I ended up returning the RotA sets.

In exchange I got five Room Sets and two Room & Passage sets from the Classic Dungeon line.

Due to a misbehaving computer over at Dwarven Forge, it took quite a while to get the replacement sets out to me, but since DF covered the shipping on the new sets and didn't charge me any sort of restocking fee, I'm sure not going to complain!

I just got the replacement sets last week, and haven't had a chance to do much other than unpack them (I now have quite a nice collection of plastic bags in various sizes, LOL).

I think that this is going to work out for the best, though. While the five RotA sets gave me just enough to build a good size dungeon, seven sets from the classic line gives me way more. I obviously need to play with them a bit, but I don't think I will be needing too much in the way of bread-and-butter pieces anytime soon!

The timing seemed to have worked out well with the appearance of all of the new individual pieces, too. It basically let me "roll my own" Wicked Additions set.
