Advice re: Colour match Cavern set? 4 Years, 5 Months ago
Hi
I recently picked up some Hirst Arts cavern casts from a local gaming store, and I have some Dwarvern Forge Cavern sets.

Can anyone help me with advice on getting the colours pretty close? I use GW paints mostly, but open to suggestions.

(I figure once I get the colours right ill use water effects on the small pools.)

Thanks in advance!

Personally, I don't try to get EXACT match, it would take too long since I cast a lot.

The closest and fastest way for me is 3 steps:

-I painted them with watered down black, so it get in all the cracks
-I Painted them with something close to medium gray
-Finally, I dry brush them with a special color I mixed (gray, olive green, dark yellow, light brown). It took a while to get the right color, but I now got a big bottle of it.

It's close enough without spending hours at it.

You will have to use trial and error, I think -- but remember, to start, the grey tends to have some brown in it, even a yellow shade of brown. Also, as you drybrush, include yellow as well as white in your mix (but not too much!)

It can be easy to miss, so I wanted to flag it for you. Good luck!

Also, remember -- to take the pressure off! -- not all DF pieces are the exact same color, anyway. I have several cavern sets, as well as the cavernous lake and river sets, and there are definitely tiles that don't match up colors exactly. So if yours don't look EXACTLY like a given cavern piece, that won't necessarily make them stand out any more than any other DF piece....

I use a base coat of Apple Barrel Pewter Grey, follow with a black wash to get into all the cracks and crevices, then dry brush with Americana True Ochre. After that, I also dry brush a few places with Americana Raw Sienna and also dry brush a few other places with white, just for some different effects.
