Stupid question about room edges 4 Years, 12 Months ago
I am sure this has been asked and answered before, but a quick look through topics didn't turn anything up:

With rooms, at the edge the wall takes up part of the 1" square, leaving less than a full inch inside the room. So, do people consider that to be a full 1"/5' or do they only use the full squares. It seems to me that considering it to be the full 5' has the advantage that you can more easily recreate maps from published material without running out of overall dungeon space; on the other hand, it's hard to fit a mini into it. Only considering the full squares as occupiable space means your minis will fit but that making up maps from other sources will be harder. So what do people do?

I saw a question like this before, and the answers included 1.) allowing standard use of the squares, or 2.) not allowing use of the squares at all. It has also occurred to me, because I've been running a lot of goblins, that small creatures could occupy the space while medium-sized creatures are not.

If you've got an "old-school" map that has ten+ feet of stone between every room, then you can get away with not using the squares next to the wall. If rooms share a common wall, however, you almost have to use wall-squares as full squares.

Thanks, chaps.

I am thinking that in most cases I'll have to take liberties with the layout of pre-drawn dungeons in several regards anyhow. Diagonals aren't on sale any more and no one seems to have said whether they'll come back, for example (and, as I am late to this, I am somewhat inclined to stick with the no-keystones stuff, although Stefan's tutorial on filling in those gaps is both encouraging and scary).

Still, looking forward to the first session using it. Nothing says "we can't get out of this claustrophobic place" like walls do...

I recall someone in another thread allowing use of those squares but having players take a penalty on attack rolls for being so close in to the wall.

I'm pretty new to this stuff too- I've only run one night's worth of encounters so far but it really does add a lot to the atmosphere. My players were VERY impressed.

I do not use those squares at all since the figurines can't be placed correctly.(games workshop etc)
However I use it to place shelves, treasure chests, etc

I like the "hampered by proximity to the wall" rule though in the past I have simply not used those spaces and built the room a bit bigger to compensate.

I just used my first DF sets last Friday during my first DM'ing in about 17 years. It was a fun night although I'm still learning the D&D 4e rules. We had a fun time with the sets and I'm likely to buy several more in the future.

The question came up almost immediately about the half squares by the walls, and I made an executive decision that they were simply a "part of the wall" and unplayable. The players were fine with that ruling. I think you can go either way, but just make a rule and stick with it. As long as you are consistent, then it should be good either way.

I think the penalty idea is an interesting one. I hadn't thought of that!
