Hey all, I got ROTA 1 & 2. How many of each do you really need if you want to make a good layout. (otherwise, an adventure that does not mean picking up pieces every two seconds as if on a small table.

I noticed that a deal was available for those who ordered three of the ROTA 2 sets. Am I right to assume that you generally need the room sets as opposed to the passage sets?

Depends on the adventures you play.
If you like huge dunjeons and have a full bank account you can buy several sets and try to make the best board never seen.
I own a set of each and I think it's neough.I will post a photo of the rota set 1 & 2 party I've made yesterday to show you.

Depend on how you use them. Personnally, I never set up a full blown dungeon. I only use them when there is combat, so only a small setup is needed. I only have one of (almost) each set.

I have two or three of every set except Cavern (I have five) and Cavernous Passageways (four). I (and my jaw dropped players) LOVE seeing a huge layout covering the whole table!!!

edit: I bumped a bunch of old photos of extensive set-ups - check them out in the Photos Section!

The more space you want, the more basic sets you need. If you want to build a single room and the passageways just outside, you can get by with a single set. If you want to build two or three rooms at once, you need about three (IMO).

The more details you want to put in your set-up, the more accessory sets you need. (Personally, I want two of every accessory set -- it's nice to be able to put two unique pieces in relevant places (on opposite sides of the same room, back to back on opposite sides of a wall, etc.), and two-four of the other cool pieces never seems like enough.) You could probably rationalize that three accessory sets are equivalent to one basic set, in terms of providing raw space. (Give or take.)

That's for the "primary" lines (Fantasy, Cavern, MBS, Sci-Fi). For the limited edition lines, my "strategy" is to get equal numbers of each set in the line -- two each of DoE, and three each of RotA (which gets me the promotional goodies).

Check the photo section - topic title : Minotaure & ROTA
It are only ROTA 1 & ROTA 2 sets.
I didn't use every pieces but it gives you a correct idea of what you can do with it.
(of course rota entrance should be great but they don't sell it yet)

I know this isn't a new topic, but as someone who is just getting into Dwarven Forge pretty heavily, I wanted to throw in my two cents.

I thought I would only need a certain amount of certain sets, I'll use the Medieval Building Sets for this example. This stuff is expensive so I can only get a set or two each pay. I slowly built up to the amount I thought i would need which is two of the MBS and one of the MB expansion. This works for a decently sized tavern or a few small buildings. But I quickly found what i had lacking when I got bigger and grander ideas or wanted to make larger and more complex set ups.

So, the way I see it is it will depend on what you want to do. My advice would be to pick up a set or two and see how they work out. Experiment with just a set or two and you will get an idea of how much more you may need. Some people will only need a single copy of a set, but some of us will need more... way too much more.

Good luck to everyone getting into DF, it's very expensive but it is so worth it. It really has changed the shape of my weekly RPG and I can't see myself ever going back. Just be prepared to have a consistently empty wallet.

I agree with many of you that what to buy really depends upon what you're looking to do. In terms of gameplay, if you want a full dungeon you'll obviously need multiples of many sets.

On the other hand, if you only want to make the areas needed for melee you can keep it pretty basic if you're willing to compromise a bit on your layouts. I'm just starting out, and I'm keeping myself to the classic dungeon sets at first. My current weak point is the ability to make hallways, so I'll be picking up an extra room & passage set, and likely an extra narrow corridor set as well. ...And some wicked additions when they are back in stock. ...And Advanced Builder, for that matter. Who am I kidding? You never have enough, do you?

At first I was going to limit the sets I needed to just combat set ups. Then i found that having a full display for the current area actually helps with visualization, encourages role-playing, etc. I can't help it now. I just need more and more.
