New to the polystone addiction... Need some advice on choices. 5 Years, 5 Months ago
I am a roleplayer( 4th edition currently, though I started in the early 80's with the red box) and I have in the last month bought several sets (I have a VERY understanding wife) and am probably going to get one more set at Gen Con this year, but I have some options and want some veteran opinions on the most versatility considering my current sets.

I currently have:

2 Room Sets
1 Room and Passage Set
1 Wicked Additions Set
1 Wicked Additions II Set
1 Fantasy Floor Set
2 Cavern Sets
1 Cavernous Passages Set
1 Den of Evil Set
2 6" Halls
3 6x6 Floors

I am planning on spending less than $200 at Gen Con and want to get some accessories for my dungeon and some basic minis as well, leaving me with around 120 ish to spend on DF.

I would kind of like to have an MBS because of the use as a tavern or shop, however I have heard lots of people raving about the ABS and the Cavernous Chasms sets, both of which would give my dungeons a different look. Additionally, those of you that have the accessory packs which do you think is the most useful, I am currently leaning towards the Tavern but I can see that the treasures would be very handy as well.

Thanks for your help in advance and keep fueling the DF machine.

Welcome!

I think the answer really depends upon your needs. I waited awhile to pick up MBS sets and instead focused on getting cavern rivers and lakes. I personally prefer those to the chasm set. However, if you are running a city-based game like Ptolus then MBS does come in handy.

I personally like the cavern river because it allows for so many adventuring options with water encounters.

Welcome!

First of all - the MBS is out of stock (back in stock this June), so you don't have to worry about that right now!

An ABS would add versatility to the way you can set-up your normal dungeon DF stuff. If you find yourself wishing you could, "put a door here instead of there" or "if only I had a 1/2 tile" then ABS is the way to go. If situations liek that have never come up, then I'd wait on it. (however, the ABS is out of stock right now too)

You have a good amount of cavern stuff, though a Chasm and/or another cavern or cavernous passageway set would be nice, especially if you find yourself doing a fair amount of cavern crawls (and so could use the passageway pieces) or you find yourself wishing you could build a bigger or more diverse cavern chamber (then go for Cavern or Chasm sets).

Hope this helps!

jw,

I too have a VERY understanding wife, but I also found out that it's a GOOD idea to wait and see what you're going to USE, and get that FIRST. I have a LOT of DF that just sits there in the boxes and looks pretty while it gathers dust. As an example, I haven't pulled the 25 Diagonal Walls set out but ONCE since I bought it, back in 2005. Same with the Fantasy Floors. Yet EVERY Game, regardless of what genre I'm playing in (Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Modern) gets Master Maze and Cavern of SOME kind. I have the DoE and DoE Room sets, but I don't think I've used them - although that may change now that RotA has come out - I look at them as mirror twins of each other.
It all depends on your gaming genre and WHERE your adventures take you and your party. Also, if you find yourself HOSTING other GM's games, you can quickly buying ALL the sets, just as I did. That's how I went nearly broke buying DF - we had a gaming group that met at our house and several different DM's all wrote adventures for the group.
Guess who tried to keep up with the scenery? Yup; ME.

Pick and choose, JW; pick and choose.

See ya, guy, and GAME ON!

To be fair Jim, by your own admission, you don't do much gaming these days - might be why some of your DF sets aren't getting used too much?

I use my DOE sets for Chaos Cultist temples in my Ptolus game so much I'm thinking about getting a 7th set!

The thing is, if you are willing to push the edges a bit and use your imagination, the sets you have can substitute for sets you don't have. Use one set in place of another, or mix and match.

Want to do a tavern, but you've got Caverns instead of MBS? The tavern is now a dwarf-owned bar situated in a natural cave -- the dwarf liked the cave so much that he never bothered to finish the walls.

Not enough RotA to go around? Use Classic pieces to make service areas, slums, and zones that have fallen into disrepair; use DoE for wizards' labs and areas of corruption; use Caverns (especially in conjunction with Cavernous Rivers) for areas that have been reduced to natural stone by time and erosion.

Not only does this allow you to "get by" without all of the sets you want, it also allows you to pull out the sets you do have more often.

Yes I must admit that I looking to buy more for myself primarily. I do get by with what I have now, but I am running the Scales of War adventure path from Dungeon magazine and I like the idea of having more varied looks. I had thought of using the dungeon tiles as a stone tavern but the dwarven bar thing is genius. The cavern sets IMHO look the best, as far as infinite, minute details, but they are also a bit more of a budget crunch on my other Gen Con spending. As I think about it I am leaning towards a MBS and/or some DF accessory packs such as the magic items and treasures and the tavern. Thanks for the advice and keep gaming.

Yeah, I use the Dungeon Accesories (back in stock in June) and the Medievil Furniture accessories sets pretty much all the time. Geret stuff.

Exactly right, Harneloot! That's why I've offered them to the Game Room chair at Shore Leave this July; if he has anyone planning to run a D&D game (or other 25mm game), he's welcome to borrow them! Might as well get some use out of them, rather than have them sitting here gathering dust while I'm working Security and videotaping Temple of Trek (DON'T ask; it'll just make you crazy!). I know Joe wil ltake care of them and keep them safe for me, and what more can I ask for?

If you're anywhere East of the Mississippi, come on over to Shore Leave July 10-12 and get into a game or two. Go to www.shore-leave.com and check out the guests, too. Hope to see you there, guys!!
