And look where I land... :)

Anyway, I'm browsing some different sets, and its very obvious in some of the threads I've read so far that there is no buying "one" set. Thats fine, I can understand something where you buy a few here and there...

My question first though for the experts here...What sets and how many would be required to build something like the below pictured?

www.dwarvenforge.com/store/product_image.php?imageid=218

I really wish on the pictures of the sets it listed how many and of what sets were used...

Thanks!

For the setup shown you'll need 1 cavern set and a cavernous chasm set.
You'll need something to hold the second level in place
(you may use the spare parts for this they are sufficiend to do the job)

From both sets will be spare parts after setup.

included/needed/ name of piece
4 /4 / Curved Chasm Ledge
2 /2 / T-shaped Chasm Ledge
2 /2 / Straight Chasm Ledge1
1 /1 / Straight Chasm Ledge2
1 /- / 4”x 4” Cavernous Platform
2 /- / Small Cavernous Platform
2 /2 / Stalagmite Cluster
2 /2 / Cavernous Narrow Stairs
2 /1 / Cavernous Pillars
2 /2 / Cavernous Walkway
2 /- / Curved Cavern Wall Filler

4/ 4/ curved sections
3/ 3/ straight wall sections
2/ 2/ complex corner sections
2/ 2/ dead end sections
3/ 3/ floor sections
1/ -/ corner conversion section
1/ -/ twisted conversion section
2/ 2/ stalagmites
1/ 1/ medium flat rock
2/ 2/ small flat rocks
2/ 2/ small water "tubs"

If you can finance a initial purchase of 2-4 sets, you'll be off and running. Obviously, the more sets you own the greater the versatility, but lots of wonderful set-ups can be made with just a few sets (as mentioned above, that awesome chasm is only 2 sets - but you have a good point, each of those pictures on the web-site should show exactly which sets were used to make them!)

2 Cavern, 1 Cavernous Passageway and 1 chasm set - now that would be a sweat initial set-up!

BTW - we've had a few people in exactly your position in the last 6 months or so - I'm sure one of them will chime in with their very recent "just got into DF" experience.

Funny last night after spending about 2 hours on the site I think this is one of the final builds I came too.

From reading the forums it seems there are two schools of thought...a Cavern and a Room initial buy in. The cavern initial buy in looks like the above (much simpler to come too), but the Room one gets complicated...Rooms, Rooms and Passages, Evil Den Rooms, Wicked Additions I and II, etc...

Perhaps the Caverns set is just an easier conclusion, especially since most of the water stuff is out of stock so I don't have to think about it :)

I agree - caverns are simpler, especially without the water elements, to (intially) consider. No doorways to worry about either!

Cavern sets were my initial purchses. Incidently, I said to myself that that would be the ONLY kinds of sets I would buy....

Welcome to the party, Andozane !!

The best advice I can give is to start with buying the environment you find you adventure in the most. Pretty simple, but easily forgotten when looking at all the cool sets DF has to offer. But, yes, having a lot of it out of stock does ease the decision-making !!

Enjoy !!

Yeah, I tried to stick to that maxium of just by one type of set, I started with Sci-fi, and stuck to it a very long time, then purchased a Cavern from a local store clearing stock, and started buying cavern, Then DoE came along, Then Rivers, then MBS, then RotA.... BUT i still have No Classic, so far all i have managed to do is instead of buying just one type I can safely not buy one set. (in our game group we have a guy who buys Classic so we don't lose out but I don't buy it :) )

Andozane,

Welcome to the addiction!
As a DF-aholic, I will say this to you NOW; start saving every penny you can, because you will shortly start stealing lunch money from your kids to finance your DF habit.
I started out with the intent to get "a couple of sets" so my friends and I could run 40K battles through the corridors; this was 8 or 9 years ago. I now have Master Maze, Cavern, Sci-Fi, River, Lake, MBS, DoE, and RotA sets coming out of my ears, I've converted over to D&D gaining so I can use MORE AND MORE DF, and I haven't even played D&D in 2 or 3 years - but I'M STILL ORDERING DF! I'M HOOKED!!
But it IS very NICE stuff.
That's okay; your kids will be able to play with it too, and in about 50 years, they'll be able to sell it on eBay and pay for your nursing home care - with cash left over for their yacht!

Pick ONE environment, the one you game in MOST. Fill it in as much as you can, AS you can, THEN start to branch out to the NEXT most used environment, etc. Eventually, you'll have all there is available of DF and can sit back and relax, and just pick up whatever Stefan and Jeff crank out that's new.

So, I took the plunge, but completely ignored most of the advice. I decided I would jump into the Limited Edition fold and snagged 4 of the DoE sets while I could. Next purchase will be when they restock the Room and Wicked Editions for DoE.

Once that is done, then I am going to go the Caverns route one way or another, as they are just too cool looking!

I unboxed one box so far, and wow this stuff is cool. I'm actually pretty impressed with how much of a dungeon I was able to form up with just ONE box. Can't wait to get em all out!
