Rule Sets for sci-fi 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Hi,
I finally broke down an d bought a large amount of sci-fi sets. Does anyone have a favorite rules set they could recommend? I know Space Hulk will be great but looking for some other rules.
Thanks
Rob

For the sci-fi set I would really recommend using Star Wars Miniatures, as the bases fit the 1 inch tiles, while Space Hulk isn't totally perfect, as the figures need a lot more room, you would actually need floor tiles that are 1.5 inch across to accomodate the newer Terminators (if you use the original minis this is not a problem). The Genestealers arm span is pretty wide though, practically covering four 1 inch squares without touching another figure or a wall. If you 2x2 squares as the basis for movement you would do just fined with the sci-fi sets in my opinion.

I have been developing a Sci-Fi dungeon crawl for the last 2 years called "Xeno-Terror". I'm hoping to have the core rules available in the next few weeks. You can use Starship Troopers, 40K or AT43 miniatures (or subsitute anything really...)

I'll post here when they are finished if you want to check them out.

Hi, I don't play too much sci-fi, but I would say that playing scenarios for Doom: The Boardgame designed for DF Sci-Fi and with the proper minis, has to be awesome...

DragonStar - it's a D20 game, uses D&D 3Ed base rules and builds on them. ALSO uses D&D minis, plus any OTHER minis - SW, ST, and anybody ELSE you want to throw in there, because it can inhale just about any civilization and tech level you want.
It's the closest to GURPS I've ever seen in a D20/D&D game environment, and it's fully RPG. Plus, the dragons are BOTH Good Guys AND Bad Guys, split by Chromatics or Metallics.

I'll toss Alpha Omega into the mix... it probably fits into a slightly different category than sci-fi (post-post-apocolyptic with aliens thrown into the mix), but depending on your leanings may be something you might like.

you can give Fantastic Worlds a pulp-sci fi game in the style of Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers and the like
(i think the DF stuff fits nicely to retro sci-fi)

Are you looking for miniatures/skirmish rules, or for roleplaying rules?

The "Serenity" RPG has some interesting mechanics, but needs serious work in a few places to actually work. The character stats, skills, and combat systems are ready to play, but the ship creation and space travel sections don't quite track. The licensee also took a couple of liberties with the world (robots are widely available, for instance) and on their forums are very resistant to answering any questions about expanding the universe (telepathy is the only power that was induced by the Alliance experiments, so don't ask about any other psychic/psionic power).
