I started with only a room and passage set and a room set (prototypes) and was quite happy for many months......we added about 1-2 new sets to the dwarvenforge line every Gen Con for the first 4-5 years...I actually recommend starting with only a few sets like:

Room and Passage
Room
Wicked additions Set
Cavern Set

and then go from there if you like...once you start building, it will tell you where to go.....

Stefan,

You Rock!!! I am soooo glad that you started to release the other sets. Now not to sound a little impatient but how about a release date, preorder date, and generally more info on RoTa and any other surprises you might have in the mix.... I seem to remember a post several months back with hints about the future. I got it how about a pre-halloween announcment adjusted for the maya calendar translated with leap years. In case you are wondering that means SOON Please!!!

Shadox,

Friends,

Sorry for the delay in information on the Realm of Ancient's...... I really HATE waiting myself so i can feel your pain...As a matter of fact, Jeff and I are also waiting....to hear from the Workshop (factory)....
seems that my ridiculously complicated mosaic designs might be too much for them to hand paint...don't forget, these have to be reproduced by hand, with tiny brushes....those of you who paint miniatures will understand just how difficult my designs might be to replicate over at the factory. Every tile, 1/8 the size of a grain of rice has to be painted individually....there is no dry-brushing that can produce a pattern which ropes around itself....this is actually unprecedented in it's level of tiny detail......

I hope we don't have to scratch the whole mosaic thing, but we shall see...we may have to opt for a simpler design....the point is, while they ARE able to reproduce my design, it would require all their best painters and take up very valuable time...this would raise the cost tremendously...therefore, we are exploring various methods to arrive at something that looks great but is also not impossible to paint.....

There is still hope...

Is each RoTA set going to come with a tiny brush, paints and paint-by-numbers instructions?

Well, I for one would not balk at a $200 R&P RoTA set.......not suggesting this is the solution, but I'm just sayin....

Maybe a limited run like the DOE sets?

Stefan,

Do you have any ideas of what a compromise would look like? I love the fantastic look but what I might suggest is a compromise that work like this. Design 2 or 3 different compromises in terms of painting. Show them on the site here. Let the fans vote. Include instructions in the box that could help us repaint them to look like your original did. Then sell a run of 500 sets or something. Release a limited GOLD edition Rota later with the better paint job say 50 sets limited 1 per customer for 1.5 ~ 2x cost of original set. Jazz it up with an mayan idol or something that is also limited. The idol could have runes carved in it, maybe Dwarven Forge written in ancient Greek letters if that is possible. maybe include a few extra pieces if the set cost 2x as much. Just an idea.

HHmmm...perhaps if there is want, we could release the basic Set with more simple (yet still kool) designs and then also release just the single rooms individually or one of each in a two piece set, like a Limited Edition for whatever it would cost that way....

Have you considered alternate coloring techniques? Is it possible to create a stamp (or a set of stamps) that less skilled workers could use to color the mosaics, or would the quality fall off too drastically?

If you do something with increased costs, definitely keep it to a Limited Edition so that you can gauge the demand at that cost. Nothing prevents issuing a second run later (change the colors if you feel the need to distinguish between multiple Limited Editions).

Stefan,

If you are considering reducing the amount of detail paint work (with the mosaics) might I suggest the following:

How about simplifying (or eliminating) the mosaic design in the corner and wall pieces while maintaining the existing detail of the 4-way pieces.

You could then add a (4x4) floor piece that would also have a mosaic design on it.

In this way (larger) rooms could still have a detailed mosaic floor design available for inclusion without requiring such detailed paint work on all of the HOTA pieces.

There could then be a (4x6) floor piece designed for the expansion set, (when there are longer 6" wall segments included).

Personally I would prefer the high level of detail on a select number of pieces, rather than various levels of detail on all of the pieces. In this way the mosaics themselves may appear even more impressive -being less "common" in appearance.

I honestly believe that in this case, less-is-more.

In any event, I'm confident that the HOTA sets will be incredible -whatever the decision.

Good luck.

Bad news is in......unfortunately the pricing is WAY too high! As it stands now, we would have to sell a set of the realms of Ancients (single layer box) for around $300-400!

Obviously, we will have no choice but to revise the paint scheme on all the pieces....

The sculpting will remain the same, so there is nothing stopping anyone from creating their own personal mosaic designs if they like...

Possibly, we can release a limited edition number of painted 4x4 rooms individually...

Actually, ALL our factory prices are going up yet again! This does not bode well for the future of our entire business. I am going to be totally honest with everyone here, we may have to stop producing many of our older Sets or else raise the prices considerably...I highly recommend that if there are Sets that you are on the fence about, now is the time to get them before they either go up in price or disapear forever...

Sorry for this bad news.

Hopefully, the economy will get better next year....

Stefan,

Personally, I was thoroughly amazed at the appearance of the ROTA set from the first concept drawings that were posted and I didn't notice any of the detailing on the floors at that time.

So, as far as I'm concerned the ROTA will still exceed my greatest expectations, even without any mosaic detailing on the floors.

And thanks for the update, I will be certain to order any of my outstanding sets with my upcoming ROTA order.

Good luck to all throughout the upcoming year, (and beyond -of course).

Ouch!

I'm sure you realize that we all feel and share your pain at the prospect of Dwarven Forge not progressing forward at the wonderful rate it has over the past few years and absolutely shudder in horror at the thought that the entire business might not continue!!!

Please, please PLEASE try to adjust things so that the business can continue to exist, even if it means waiting some years for a better economy until you can grow and flourish (as you have over the past 3-4)

And everyone better heed Stefan's words, because when Aracon gets wind of this, he just might buy everything that's left!!!
