I'm glad to see you recommended plywood for the spray adhesive. Back in the early '80's I was kinda heavily into Star Fleet Battles and decided to make a giant battle plate using tempered masonite. I used 3M Spray 77 Adhesive to stick down the paper maps sheets, followed by a clear acetate cover; OY!
Ever seen a 2'x4' section of Masonite curved up like a ski nose? Bob Hope would have been proud of that one!
I tried everything I could think of, including 50 lbs. of free weights from my buddy's home gym, to get that map sheet to flatten out; I finally threw it out in the garage for a couple of years of heat/cold/damp/dry cycles, in hopes that SOMETHING would flatten it back down. Never happened; it eventually went in the trash, rocking like a hobby horse.

1/2" plywood would have been MUCH better.
