Re storage:

In my case, I store only the lake and river pieces in the styrofoam cases. Everything else has been unpacked and sit open on six sets of bookshelves located on each wall beside my gaming table.

I personally find it far easier to use my DF when I don't have to search for and unpack pieces (from multiple sets) everytime I do a build.

That being said, I do not travel with my Df stuff at all - so this may not be a suitable option for you.

Even if you use this option (of storing DF pieces outside the boxes) you may wish to keep the original packaging in storage if that is a viable option. I didn't keep any of the extra packing myself, but should you ever decide to move, pack or sell any of these -then having said packaging would be of great use.

Sam

Welcome - and a truely huge start into DF. It took me years to get a similar set together.

About storage - there are a few threads where this is discussed. For example in the Cool Photo section I show my own solution - and there is another thread in the last three month with photos.

In regard to the narrow passages - here are my comments.

Narrow passages are not crucial for most set-ups. Some people never bought them and are still happy. On the other hand - there are neat uses. A narrow passage forces a group to move into single file. There a lots of uses for the 4-way intersection - using it as extra pillars with normal set-ups etc.

And there is the biggest 'misuse'. The narrow passage is ideal to be turned over for a first level. Have a look at the Lake revisited I just posted. The bit below the Tower are two Narrow Passages turned over. While it isn't essential to have narrow passge pieces here, most have a wall and do fit upsite down as a solid layer.

But here is the real reason why you will buy the set. Looking at the sets you bought soon you will want to be able to do anything possible and you want to be complete.

I see you just went in on and got a bunch of stuff, congrats! :) I am very seriously considering jumping in as well. Can I ask what it cost for your purchase and do you feel you are able to make about anything you need?

I'm trying to figure out a cost range and how much is needed to not feel really limited in what you can build.

Thanks for the help. :)

wow.

i bet you're popular around DF's offices about now. ;)

that's the kind of money drop i only wish i could do at one time, but building up a bit at a time has gotten me quite a bit.

still need more cavern floors and straight walls, though...

and eventually, some of the regular fantasy stuff.

sam500,

Not sure if someone has posted a response to your question or not. I own 31 sets plus about 150 loose addons. (Thanks Jeff for the big sale in 2004/2005 on individual pieces.) The short passages are very useful. Most of the time I run out of hall ways for my dungeons using just the room and passages sets. The short passages pieces makes it easy to add long hallways.

However my biggest lament is not owning any narrow passages sets. I have been given the green light from the big boss to expand over the next 3 months. I will probably grow my collection to 40+ sets and close to 200 loose addons. With a bit o' luck I should be adding 2 narrow passages [from ebay :-( ] some DOE, Rivers, Lakes, and defiantly 1 more ABS. I also can not wait for the new Additions for the MBS. This stuff is very addicting. I have been collecting since Stephan used to work out of his loft. Good luck with your setups.

Shadox -

This is NOT a shot at you, because I have the same problem;
With all those sets and loose pieces you have, it's easy to understand the FIRST line of your signature...we search our whole life never finding the DF piece we're searching for!
It's the loose pieces that drive me NUTS, how about you?

All joking and kidding aside, this stuff is GREAT for gaming!

See ya!

Man,
I'm envious of the number of sets some of the long timers here own.

Just got the bug recently and lashed out with 2 x DoE (partly due to its limited nature), 3 x DoE Wicked additions and 2 x Sci Fi starters.

However, after the first lot arrived, kinda got hooked and have picked up since
1 x sci fi starter
1 x sci fi passages
1x cavern
1x room & passages
1x wicked additions #2

picked those ones up on Ebay due to the cheapish costs.....but am already looking for more. Guess my problem is too much diversity. Need to focus and plan my purchases a little more carefully rather than grabbing what looks good :)

It's an addiction..........and fueled even more by the ever friendly members of this forum and their wonderful set ups. What's worse, some of the custom pieces show by various posters are getting me sucked in even deeper ! :)

My wife is gonna kill me!!

May I humbly suggest getting the majority of your sets, as you move forward with our addiction :D be purchased directly from Dwarven Forge. By us supporting them, they can continue to provide cool new stuff (and cool old stuff restocked!) for us.

I too have bought some stuff from E-bay that you can't get direct from DF, but all my major sets (see Off the Deep End thread) I bought directly from Stefan & Jeff. I feel, strangely enough, I loyalty to them and the compnay, and I only just stared!

Happy Hollidays everyone.

hehehe

harneloot, not to worry. DF stuff is so popular that it doesn't seem to come up all that often.

I intend to make another major purchase sooner rather than later. my major problem really is postage. unfortunately, using the direct retailer option, I have to deal with international postage, which makes it extremely expensive to purchase small one off items from them. hence, i prefer to wait and do a larger order. I find that at the very least, the price of shipping per item/set is decreased somewhat.

as a result, some of the ebay stuff was just irresistable.

if given a choice of a retailer or DF, I would most definitely deal with DF given their great support and product. but when it comes to second hand stuff, where the price is the major drawcard, I cant help but go down that route. that plus the case that one of the sellers was local and postage was next to nothing compared with dealing with anyone overseas :)

the way i see it, the more i get, the more I want....so DF is going to win :) no offence to the DF guys, you have great product. lilke i have said, i love the stuff and don't begrudge the cost of the items. it just hurts spending on shipping rather than DF stuff, specially when the postage is as much as the product purchased.

harneloot, you mentioned purchasing off otherworld in the UK and was concerned about postage. that's the dilemma i am facing. my next order planned for DF is going to cost me about $ 270 US for the stuff, but postage is coming up to $ 180. I know it's not DF"s fault, but wish there could be a way around that.

Ah, I understand - you are not in the US.

That certainly does hurt - $180 in postage for $270 in product!

shipping in Canada is no picnic either... its a automatic 60 bucks no matter what it is...
Like stated it hurts bigtime when shipping is almost half of the product price when making a order...oh well thats the breaks.
