What other pieces do I need? 7 Years, 6 Months ago
Hello all...

I've finally been pulled into the world of actually buying DF stuff rather than simply enjoy my friends many sets. I'm the DM of our long time game and also an active plasti-crack adict, so it was only really a matter of time (I held out for 2 years!)

SO....I've finally broken down and ordered 2 Cavernous Rivers & Walls and 3 Cavernous Passageways (from DF) and 1 Caverns set (bought off frined).

What other pieces do people reccomend? I was planning on 1 more Caverns set and 2 lake sets but then what? Some individual pieces, another Cavern set, or would that be "enough"?

How often do individual pieces come back into stock?

Have Rivers or Lake pieces ever been released as individual pieces?

Oh yes, I'm limiting myslef to JUST caverns right now!!!

Thanks for your advice,
JGF

I would consider planning around acquiring (eventually) at least one of each set in the genre(s) you are interested in.

IMHO, the DF sets all contain plenty of great and different pieces. It would seem quite incomplete (for me anyway) to lack all of the pieces from an entire set.

By "sampling" pieces from a wide variety of sets early on, you will soon discover your favorite pieces and buy accordingly.

That being said, if you see certain single pieces that are available and you know you need them - BUY THEM!

Just my two cents...

Caverns are definitely my favourite DF 'range.' I think you need at least 1 cavern set for every 2 of the other cavern sets OR buy a load of single pieces of extra cavern wall, corner and floor pieces. Otherwise, you will run the risk of having loads of floor and passageways and not enough wall/corner pieces to make a decent number of decent sized rooms. You can leave off buying more floor pieces if you don't mind using the water floor pieces in most of your rooms.

I have 6 Cavern, 3 Cavern River, 3 Cavern Lake, 3 Cavern Pasageways and to utilise it all I still needed to order a load more individual cavern wall, corner and floor pieces. I still need to order a load of individual entire lake pieces (when they are released!) to make a big lake work! I am not listing this to 'brag' - I am merely sharing my cavern pieces 'ratio' experience.
Hope this helps
Dave :)

If i read correct you will have

2 River and Walls
3 Passageways
2 Cavern Sets and
2 Lake Sets

It will be a fine ratio, i have the same
sets.
What you really need is some more
Conversions i would recommend
2 of each type for a total of 8 additional
Conversions. Maybe 3 of each type
(i'm right now considering this myself
for my collection).

If you have all these i would move on to
another line, i recommend DoE, cause
they are limited edition, so you
have a chance to get some before they
are out.

Harneloot -

I don't know where in the world you are, but IF your FLGS actually IS L, then I suggest you work out a deal with them to raid their DF inventory, if any, and gradually buy them out of whatever they have. This will take T&M, unless you are wealthy and retired, but it WILL be worth it! Concentrate on what you're using NOW, but grab all of it.
Once you've played Hoover there, get a start on shopping the online DF store; yes, they are also expensive, but anything free is worth what you paid for it. Here, you only need be selective as to what is limited edition, and what is shown as last call items, those that will not be restocked. Clearance pricing will be your biggest hint there.
Last resort, only because shipping and bidding can drive prices UP, is eBay. Best stuff to get there is one-of-a-kind and custom conversion stuff, and stuff such as Tony Griffon makes as fill-in pieces for the Sci-Fi line. Be picky, and use ALL the eBay buyer cautions.

That's MY opinion; I've been called a troll lately elsewhere, so you can take my postings with either a grain of salt or the entire shaker, your option.

By the way; what IS a troll, in the forum and on-line vernacular? Can someone here define it, please?

See ya!

It is off topic here, but still:

A troll is a person that is not interested in a serious discussion but merely posting stuff to provoke people.

The real problem is: Trolls exist, but in the last few months it has gotten a serious stupid habit in forums and newsgroups, simply calling everyone a troll who voices a different opinion than the majority of the community.

It's rather easy: If you can call someone a troll, you don't need to think about his arguments anymore, you just discredit his opinion and are finished with him. This is especially usefull if his arguments are uncomfortable but still somehow true or difficult to counter-argument.

In former times, people were using the word "heretic" for the same technique to keep people with other opinions silent.

bye

Thanks for all the advice.

How worth it is it to buy individual pieces b/c of the "no storage box" issue?

Green Knight - what do you mean by conversion pieces?

Thanks!~

Thanks for the definition. It settles my mind greatly. It also defines some of the people who called me that.

See ya!

The buying of individual pieces shouldn't be an issue unless you are going to have to transport pieces each week for your game. Even then, I would have thought that wrapping them in tissue paper/bubble wrap and putting them snug tight in a suitably robust box would solve this problem. As for storage in your house - you will probably find that as you acquire more and more DF you will not want to keep it all in its boxes anyway. It takes up an awful lot of space and takes a long time to get out/put away if it is all in its original boxes. That's only my opinion, anyway.
