Thank you GS for the explanation of repulsorlift tech in Star Wars.
The tech is more limited than I knew.

I have played in other gaming universes like Renegade Legion where gravitic drives can be used in a vacuum; for example the vehicles used for a planetary assault.
Anyone else play in universes where gravitic drive is vacuum-capable?

Jim, you behind the wheel of a grav car is a SCARY picture!!!
I really can see you trying to talk your way out of a citation for reckless driving.

The LCAC is cool, but a hovertank is a wonderful dream.
Think about D-Day with hovertanks rather than the amphibious Shermans, most of which never made the beaches.
Talk about making some GroPos day!!

I can see no reason a repulosr in SW couldn't work in a vacucm, and actually think there are movie sources to back up that it functions fine in a vaccum
All it needs is somthing with decent enough Mass to push against (ie something that "produces" gravity, or warps space time), my guess is the manuvering that both Obi-wan does in Attack of the Clones around the Asteroid he lands on while fighting Jango, and what the Falcon does in Empire when Han looks to hide, would be on Repulsors, becuase both of those asteroids are large enough to generate some gravity, and thus have a mass to act against, but is not big enough to capture an Atmo, so they can fly when there is no Atmo on either.

The limitation is they can't use repulsors to nip between systems becuase they no longer have enough of something to push off of, or even between a planet and say a moon, but they could most likely fly fine on repulsors over a moon that has no atmo becuase they have something to push against.

Sorry, misunderstood what you posted.
I thought you said it did not work in a vacuum.
Oh well.

I hate to worry you guys, and I'm not quite sure how to put this...

But...

You do know that all this here 'anti-gravity' 'repulsorlift' technology is fiction - don't you? It's not real. ;)

Real physicists nowadays aren't all that sure how gravity actually works - we know it does, and can quite accurately predict what will happen in a given situation between some large masses - the mathematics of it is well understood, BUT no-one really knows how the two masses each 'know' the other is there - let alone be at the stage of being able to work out how a 'gravitic' lifting device might work.

Cheers,

Awww, PHIL!!!

And JUST when we were about to order the first ten anti-grav shuttles.
Darn.

Remember, science is just man's way of explaining magic in a logical manner.
Or is that the other way 'round?

"What-ev-ver," she said.

See ya!

Phil -- OK, we're risking getting SERIOUSLY off-topic here, but I'm curious -- were you ever interested in the philosophy of science? Did you ever consider questions about the scope of scientific inquiry, the context of scientific accounts of nature, the relationship between science and language? Ever read any Kuhn, or Popper, or Feyerabend? There are others, too, but these are some of my favorites.

I love talking to physicists about the philosophy of science, I'm always curious to hear a scientist's perspective on these things....

Of course, gravitic drive is sci-fi, but philhendry, less than 40 years ago so was a book on a disc smaller than one's palm read on a computing device one could carry around like a school binder.
Star Trek-TOS remember.

How many of those devices shown from 1966-1969 are now reality including hover drive?
Far more than even the writers of that show could predict!

What other sci-fi devices and transportation shall we have in 40 more years?
Ah, the possibilities!

Okay, being seriously off-topic...

I've never been particularly interested in the philosophy of science - I always said I'd rather be doing it than talking about doing it. Maybe that makes me less of a 'compleat' scientist, but there you go. I think the same goes for a lot of 'hands on' experimental physicists. Having said that, some of the 'philosophy' may well have rubbed off on me over the years, so if there's anything you want to talk about, please feel free - but perhaps we should take if off the forum? PM me if you want to talk.

Cheers,
Phil

They kind of do PM'ing just hit the little E-mail near the posters info and it will nip off an E-mail to them....

And yes i understand that 'repulsorlift' technology is fiction, all of SW, and most of the games we are all using this stuff for is, but in many cases there is a logic to each of those universes galaxies etc that we are discussing...

Worry not, it was just that some of the posts were sounding a little too credulous so I was taking advantage and yanking your chain a bit. :D
