DarkFather,

Welcome to the Land of Obsessive GMs and our Wacky Comentary to Rationalize the Expense involved and Justify our Toy Collections... <Chuckle>... (My Six Year Old Can't wait to "Inherit" all of Daddys Kewl Gear)... So Tell us about Life as a GM Downunder...

Hi MyLordVoid;

Nothing much to tell really. I don't envision that it is too much unlike your own games. (well it won't be as soon as I get more DF scenery ;) ).

I am currently DMing a low level party through a homebrew world, and they are currently doing a homebrew adventure "Dawn of the Dead".

They have already had to find a kidnapped baby, help out a Gnome with an invention gone wrong (portal to another part of the realm), and kill an evil druid (who they never found out was working for the BBEG at the end of the adventure).

Now (next session) they have been in the hamlet long enough to experience for themselves the 'weekly mist' that fills the streets at night, and also brings with it the undead who attempt to catch late nighters, and take them away (or just kill them). The adventure is about to 'really' begin for the players. :twisted:

DarkFather,

Kewl... So this Humble lil' Hamlet Has Wayward Babies, Rascally Gnomes, Dastardly Druids and Swarms of Undead... Not to Mention Magic Mists... Just your Average village in a World Of Magic... <Chuckle>... Are these New Gamers? Or Old Hacks Starting a New Adventure? I Some Times Enjoy Getting into Games where I Get to Play a Low Level "New" Character just to get out of the "All Powerful" GM zone every now and again... Don't get to do it very Often though...<Sigh>... Any Pics of your Games to date?

Heya MyLordVoid;

The actual players are a combination of 'newer' players, and a few 'old timers', even my two sons play from time to time (they are 12 & 10 yrs old).

No photo's of any actual gameplay as yet, but when the DF scenery arrives during this week, there will be many a photo taken. :D

The Characters are lowlevel, but I am hoping that they will advance fairly quickly, as I am more of a 'Roleplay DM' than a 'Hack n Slash DM', so XP is alot less 'dangerous' to gain in my adventures, at lowlevel.

Hey Darkfather,

Welcome to Dwarven Forge, it's an honor to have a master of DDM come visit us here.

Sounds like you will have a good setup to get started and provide a home for some of your minis. Of course you will have to start using DF for skirmish set-ups. ;)

DarkFather,

Excellent On Getting the Kiddies in on the Action... I Pridefully Attest that My Daughter was Having some Problems with Reading Until we Started Playing Games Like Munchkin and Zombies about Two Years ago... Now She is a VERY Good Reader and as She Gets Older I Want to Continue to Introduce her to More in Depth Games... I Feel That Role-playing can definately Help develope Both Communication and Problem Solving Skills significantly... So I Say Kudos on the Pre-teens! Do they Enjoy it?

Willoh,

Very nice, I See that you Have Two of the Fantasy Floors Excellent! Have You Had any Brilliant Room Set Up Ideas for Doubling the Pieces? Obviously the Sarc and the Prison Cell bits are easy to incorporate, How about the Others?

Tom,

Congradulations on the Free Sets from Dwarven Forge... We Have Seen A Few Others get some complimentary gifts from them as well for contributions of one sort or another, they are very supportive and Gamer Friendly around here yay DF!... And Good Work on the Web Site and Very Cool on the Extra Gear!

Tom,

Congradulations on the Free Sets from Dwarven Forge...

Heya MyLordVoid;

The boys both love playing. Thay actually have their own campaign in which they are playing. They have just helped do their part to save a kingdom, and now they have been given an area of land. The land is located in a mountain range where there is an Orc tribe who have set up residence.

The boys, in their saving of the kingdom, befriended a different tribe of Orcs, and are owed a 'life debt' of sorts. so they have decided to 'cash in' the debt and get the Black Orc Tribe to help them vanquish the Frost Orcs (Homebrew race) from the cavern system.

Not only am I extremely impressed with the boys gaming ability, but they also showed alot of intellect in their roleplaying abilities as well. So in short... Yeah they like it. :D

I would also like to congratulate Tom on his acquirement of the free sets. That is excellent customer care shown by the DF company.

DarkFather,

Sooo... Just How Trust Worthy ARE these Black Orcs anyway? Sounds Like they have a Free Land Grant once they "Up hold" their end of the Bargain in terms of Offing the Frost Orcs... Sounds like some potential Ongoing Real Estate Secureing Quests...<EFG>... Sorry You may well be Trying to Go Easy on the Lads to Keep 'em interested of Course...<Chuckle>... But Then Nothings ever Really "Free" is it...?

Heya MyLordVoid;

(Darkfather looks around the room.. ah it's 2:00am, no boys to see the following... good.)

The Orcs are going to help the PC's clear out the caverns, as per their debt. That part I am going to do, just to be nice, and keep the interest level there. The 'fun' part for me will be later on down the track, a month or two (game time). I already know (from eavesdropping on my sons while they played PS2 one afternoon), that my Youngest son's character (A Halfling Rogue), wishes to set up an import business once they are settled into their new 'home'. Well there was nothing mentioned in the 'Orc debt' about NOT attacking caravans... ;) hehehe.

As well as this, all the wood required by the PC's (They especially wanted ALL wood to be Darkwood (hard to burn), needs to be imported from a forested region in the south of the realm they are in.... Hmmm Orcs in nice new 'highrise' housing?!?!?!?! ;) Hehehe.

I will keep the interest there, but will definitely show them that 'setting up a business, or even building a home' can be hard in many different ways. Then there is also the bartering for good prices, trustworthy tradesmen, followers (once their 'stronghold' has been built), controlling law/order, etc al.

I am planning on making this a complete life lesson (mixed with fantasy Roleplay, of course.

Who ever said you can't learn anything from D&D except how to kill. Whoever it was, needed to find a better DM obviously. :lol:

DarkFather,

Sounds Pretty Good... And I agree, those who Generalize the Lack of Intellect involved in Role-playing are likely to be either Listening to a lot of Fundamentalist Propaganda, or Have not had a Chance to Observe Really Creative People Get a Game Going... I am of Course not willing to Imply that ALL Gamers are Genius or anything, but it does take a Level of Intelligent, Communicative and Creative Effort to Play these Games... The More So I Think for the GM, but that IS biased... Players have to Exorcise the "Role-play In Character" Muscle if they want to Keep things Fresh and Interesting...

In Any Event Good Luck to the Lads as they Attempt to Tame their Bit O' the World... And Of Course I Have to Ask... Any of Those Dark Caverns have Older Less obvious, more Dangerous Residents then Frost Orcs?...<HeHeHe>....

Hmmm, you know I always say "1 of each," but I never thought of actually doing an inventory. Now seems a good time.

2 Room and passage set
1 Deluxe Room set
1 Room set
1 Narrow passage set
2 Cavern set
1 Cavernous Passages set
1 Traps set
1 Traps 2 set
1 Advanced builder set
1 Wicked Additions
1 Wicked Additions 2
2 Treasure and Magic Items
1 Lizardmen set
1 Orc set
1 Skeleton set
1 extra mermaid fountain
1 Ogre's den
1 Fantasy floor set
2 Medieval furniture
1 Dungeon accessories
various extra barrels/crates

(and of course 2 Sci-fi starter sets)

The only sets I don't have:
Curved walls and passages
Diagonal walls
Octagonal Room

(all for obvious reasons -- less efficient use of floor space with passages, and the diagonal walls without an "outside floor" can only border one room, they can't border two at once -- the new Fantasy starter only gives me two of those pieces, and as you can see from the above list, I don't need it enough to get a bunch of pieces I have by the ton for the sake of only two of 'em, heh heh heh)

Whew -- that's a lot of sets! And I look forward to the Sci-fi expansion Alpha (anxiously waiting! this week will be the longest EVER!) and the expansion Beta, PLUS the cool underground lake and river sets that I'm STILL hoping for one of these days....

:)
