That could work, Jack. Maybe even get adjoining rooms for various set-ups / games. Or suites with living spaces.

Right you are, GS.

And, apparently with the recent Convention Center staff strikes, there are quite a few openings ...

What are you all up to next weekend ?!!!

Hey guys,

This is why I'm proposing Shore Leave 28; we ALREADY have a SECURED GAME ROOM, I'M ON the Game Room staff if I work the convention, I HAVE AT LEAST 1 of EVERY DF SET, and if I say I want a D&D/DF table for the WEEKEND, I GET a D&D/DF table for the weekend. NO questions asked.
PLUS, Shore Leave is at the best hotel for combination of affordability (room rates), parking (FREE!), accessibility (Light Rail from the Airport, the Train Station, and Downtown), Easy Road Access (150 FEET from Interstate 83 Exit 20!), and some of the FRIENDLIEST Con Staff and attendees ANYWHERE (I got a wife from one year!).
The ONLY drawback I see, other than being on the East Coast instead of the banks of Missus Hip, is that you'll have to thread your way through hundreds, if not thousands, of Star Trek fen - but if YOU can speak Trek-ese, you'll fit right in, have fun, and be accepted almost as if you were a Trekkie, too! Just mumble an occasional "Dammit, Jim; I'm a doctor, not a (fill in the blank)!" under your breath, or something like "Scotty, beam me up!" if something stupid happens, and you'll do fine. Hey it worked for me for TWENTY YEARS!
SO, if you guys want a con where all you have to do is bring your brain, your wallet, and your favorite D&D/SW/D20/GW mini (and deodorant, mouthwash, and a change of underwear !) COME ON DOWN! If you want a custom-printed D20 character sheet waiting for you, e-mail your stats to me before April 2007. I promise a rollicking adventure, and I'l take ANY legal D20 character; I've already got eTools configured for D&D 3E, DragonStar, and I've been working on the D20 Modern stats.

Any takers?

See ya!

I would love to see a DF Con! I help run a small Con out of Adrian Michigan every year but I really think with all the fans DF has we could get a great turn out and it would allow all of us to ask the DF staff any questons we have and get a chance to meet them. I also agree that 2008 would give us all a little more time to save some money...

~Norwood

I'm over in Metro Detroit and used to live in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids.
I pass Adrian on the way to visit family and friends.

I'd like to hear more information about your con over there. If it's okay, I'd love to drop in sometime.

Kradlo,

I'm at your place. ;)

It's just a matter of time off. I work weekends and have used up most of my vacation time.

If you seriously want to get something going, you or Adrian, please drop me a line. I'd LOVE to be a PLAYER again. I am burnt out on DMing and could use another DM to learn from and refresh myself with (by me playing).

Well, I'm planning on starting a campaign for weeknight gaming here. I have to construct a gaming table, but that won't be too hard. I'm either going for 8' length, and trying to decide between four, five, and six feet in width.

I hope you're not allergic to cats. We have two adorable kitties, which are friendly and cute as the dickens.

I'm also up for games of Settlers of Catan and other games. Ever play Give Me The Brain, Lord of the Fries, or The Great Brain Robbery?

This is the very problem I have written two years ago about and looks like it is still here.
Regional meetings are all fine and dandy, but a con they are not.

Jim's offer in Baltimore is great, but even he recognizes it is out of the way for most despite the fact that BWI is a nice port and Baltimore has decent public transit.

Another problem is that the New Englanders and the Ganders sound like they would rather play in their own "yards".
A very unbecoming start for a con.

With the Brits having a country the size of the state of Nevada and the Continentals being in only a slightly different boat, we Americans are not going to get any sympathy from them in trying to have a ForgeCon.
The lonely bloke in Perth, Australia on these forums will understand us because he might as well be on our moon Luna than be able to get to a con in Sydney or Melbourne.
The same but slightly greater problem will exist for the American Westerners here if we decide to officially take Jim up on his invite for his con.

The Central US has plenty of facilities for us to have a con.
Unlike in Australia's case, where if you wanted a central locale, Alice Springs is not quite the place to have a game con, Kansas City seems to have the best location and facilities that I can find in general.
The only reason St. Louis might work despite it being just a little too far east is that it is a major transportation hub; then again so is Denver which is a little too far to the west side of things.
Anywhere outside of the Denver-Kansas City-St. Louis strip, all on I-70 BTW, is going start leaning too far one direction for some folks.
St. Louis would probably be Jeff's vote since that is the closest of the three to him since he is in Illinois, but I still think KC is the better choice.

Is there any one of us that is a local to the Kansas City Area?
I used to have an Aunt Beverley in Gladstone on the Missouri side of the city that would have been glad to help us with arrangements, but she has moved to Virginia and then back to Washington State since living there.
She did that very thing for meetings of executives and stockholders for Mobil Oil for decades.
She claims it has been too many years since she lived there (~25 years ago) so most likely all of her local contacts has probably moved on or retired themselves.
So again I ask, does anyone have local knowledge of the KC Area?

Remember also that this may be a con that spotlights Dwarven Forge terrain, but we are still going to want companies that make figures and such to attend as well.
That will make the burden of the financial side of the con be able to be distributed over several more backs.

I THINK I hear another agreement-to-disagree coming on.
YES, you're right, Baltimore is semi-out-of-the-way, if you don't live on the East Coast.
LA is semi-out-of-the-way if you don't live on the West Coast (some say Left coast, but we won't go there).
KC is semi-out-of-the-way if you're not in the Midwest.

Foxman, ANYWHERE is going to be semi-out-of-the-way if the person speaking doesn't live there. it's just a fact of geography; I'm not shooting at you (you have this annoying tendency to duck, and the damn riccochet comes back and slams ME to the ground!), I'm merely recognizing a fact.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that we would be MUCH better off starting with regionals, just as the IPMS does. If we start off with smaller conventions, and work our way UP, we can - eventually, not right away - put together a national that won't bankrupt the organization, DF, or any other company that sponsors our con.
And make no mistake; too much too fast CAN and WILL bankrupt a con. Been there, done that - had to sell the shirt to pay the bills!

And also, you're right about needing multiple manufacturers and vendors in the dealers room to make it work. We also need guest speakers, guest gamers and DMs, and plenty of fellow crazies to pay good money to come have FUN!

BUT, we can organize a convention circuit IF we want to, and IF we get enough gamers willing to WORK a con, for NO MONEY, with minimum hope of making a profit. And the circuit would have to include Europe and Asia.

Just my 2 cents worth.

See ya!

Hello!
I gotta agree with the Insane DM... IF DF is going to have Forgecon, it's got to start somehow, and it's always going to be out of the way for somebody. But I don't think that just because something is regional makes it less a con. Phoenix has several cons that you all probably never heard of, but being the 5th largest city in the U.S., they get a good amount of people, and they are cons. Whoever suggested Tucson, they have cons down there too, I'm for it!!!

Here's how this starts out. We get a list of folks willing to come - it might only be 20 or so. We make an inventory of DF that they are willing to bring. We make maps and adventures. We spend the 1st night (Friday night) building maps. Saturday we run adventures. Sunday we tear down and play with new building concepts. We need a hotel and 1 large ballroom.
