I have to agree that dundjinni looks really really good... Has anyone tried MapX? (It was formerly called Izandawo) - it's a free program that's rather powerful though the interface takes a little while to learn. I'd say a med learning curve. I've made some cools maps on it though.

I Have Not Seen MapX, I Have Tried a Few Other "Trials" in the Past, one of my Faovorites was GridMaster (I Think that was what it was Called), it was a lot Faster than Dundjiini for Simply Laying down Tiles, but Less Utilitarian... Sadly as of the Last time I Checked, it was No longer Being Supported so I Never Purchased the Actual Program...

Also, (And I THink that I Have Posted this Before), here is a Free, Very Simple Map Tile Maker that I Had Used for Years before Dundjinni or Similar Came out... it Is Very Straight Forward to Use and Easy to Load your Own Art Work... www.geocities.com/hulkskulker/mapmaker.htm

One of the things I like about dundjinni is that I don't have to use Windows. Works perfectly fine on my PowerBook.

Ones i have purchased, many of the ProFantasy lines (I REALLY like the Fractal Terrains for making Worlds in my SW game.... :) ), and have found that the Modern Style city actually was quit handy when i changed a design concept on the maps for modern/sci-fi cities i was making. I made them much more like the maps you buy now a days you buy a nice map of NYC and it doesn't list EVERY building and street it goes with the majors and leaves the rest blank, maybe putting in some color like green for parks etc. And oddly the players liked them more becuase they were things they could relate to.

Dungeon Crafter - a totally free one, that is still languishing in development for the next release, not bad espically for free.

Grid Master was one i tried, but never bought for much the same reasons MyLorVoid says, they no longer support it, many people who did buy it though swear by it.

Dunjinni looks nice, the free addon bits that, many have made (i like the ones that the guy Steel Rat made) look really nice, and i was able to do some decent things in the trial (no save :( ) to the point it is on my Christmass list.

The reason I like Map X is that it's just more than a tilemapper, so it allows all sorts of cool stuff... here's a map I made for my online Hackmaster game:

and the beginning's of a Keep from Little Keep on the Borderlands

Awhile back I posted pix and maps that I made with Dundjinni. Look for the Pictures from Kublacon 2005 entry in the Photos forum.

I am currently trying out the NBOS System: Fractal Mapper, AstroSynthesis and Fractal World Explorer.
I have been impressed with the Fractal World Explorer so far, but I evidently keep trying to make my map way too detailed when going down from Fractal World Explorer to Fractal Mapper.
The guy at NBOS has been helpful, but he saysI need to lower the level of detail I keep asking for.
He says I will be impressed if I just reduce the criteria slightly, but we will see.

I actually started with NBOS's AstroSynthesis and converted the data I had done there to Fractal World Explorer, which is free with both Fractal Mapper and AstroSynthesis.
I just have to get down the transition from Fractal World Explorer to Fractal Mapper.
So far, I really like I have the solar system I have done up for the campaign our group is gaming in and the world/sphere/planet; now, I just have to get down to the actual surface of the world for skirmish level battles with Fractal Mapper.
We will have to see how things go.

I've updated the Sci-Fi tileset with the half-scaled (quarter size) tiles so that bigger layouts can be made with Dundjinni (until they fix their page size limitation)

We also have a mostly bug free perl script that we'll post that will generate maps made with the small tiles to the big tiles and print out an inventory.

What we would like to do is get a large plotter and print out our maps life-size for ease of setup.
