"Rooms" is an idea for expansions to the Fantasy line that enhance the existing pieces without creating an entirely new line. A "Rooms" set is not necessarily a room unto itself -- it might be just a few pieces that allow the builder to add pieces to other DF sets to evoke scenes and environments not previously available.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, I've seen the posts that say why passages aren't necessary for MBS, and for the most part I agree. After all, a building is very different than a dungeon, and simply doesn't have big empty spaces on either side of a long hallway. However, it is a convention of the genre that medieval manors, guildhalls, and other large buildings might have secret passages that allow one to move from room to room without being seen, or to spy on others.

With enough of the new MBS pieces, it should be easy enough to set up a secret passage -- it's essentially a winding room with only a couple of secret doors to get in and out. Another type of secret door piece (perhaps just a section of plaster wall between timbers that swings open) would be welcome, but a wardrobe, a large chest, or a fireplace could be used to mark the location of a secret door without having an actual (working) piece.

That passage will, however, be two squares (ten or twelve scale feet) wide. Which is why we might (or might not) want pieces that allow us to create narrow (one square, five or six scale feet) passages. These pieces would not be like the Fantasy Narrow Passages, however. Instead, I propose creating (or modding) floor tiles that are 1"x2" (half-tiles), 1"x1" (quarter-tiles, for turns in a passage), and 1"x2" with a wall at one of the short edges. This should allow us to create narrow passageways in a medieval building, but keeps the pieces fairly small (and easy to store).

(Also, the half-tiles might come in handy for another idea that is still percolating...)

Possibly not the most necessary expansion in the world, but something that occurred as a possibility. Thoughts?

That's a great idea!

A few of these pieces would really add variety and versatility to the Medieval Building line.

Great idea. Not sure if we even really need the half piece with wall, just the narrow floors should allow to do most stuff. The only need for the wall with narrow floor would be if you have two narrow passages directly next to each other.

As for the other use of half tiles - and room that is not an even 10', 20', 30', 40' etc in width, would allow creating 15', 25' 35' etc rooms.

If you want to close the ends of the Narrow Medieval Passage, you'll need a couple of walls with narrow floors. The 1" dimension would put regular pieces out of sync with each other, and leave some of them either overlapping, or turned outward (a straight wall with the floor on the outside of the building, for example).

I admit I was thinking mainly totally internal secret passages when I said walls would not be requires, and I admit here I was mainly thinking 2x1 with wall on the 2" side.
For passages along the end of the building, not between two rooms, these would be needed. Also passage to edge of building 2x1 or 1x1 with wall on 1" end would be needed.
For totally internal passages without the special wall pieces you could either make the ends into small secret rooms, or use the narrow floor pieces to make one of the adjacent rooms an odd number of squares wide, or a second secret passage parallel on the other side of an adjacent room.

I am not saying the piece with walls are not useful, but that the narrow floor pieces are much more useful, and the wall pieces can be worked around in many situations where it initially appears they are required.

I played around with cut-and-pasted shapes in Word for a while, and I don't see narrow medieval passages working without the narrow walls, both to cap the passage AND to compensate for odd wall lengths if a turn is incorporateded into the passage.

The parallel passage on the other side of the room severely limits the placement of narrow passages, and actually requires a larger number of MBS pieces. Adding half-tiles to give a room an odd number of squares (which occurs anyway if there is a turn in the passage) will require a narrow wall to compensate unless the room is actually open along some portion, but a fully enclosed room will be impossible without a narrow wall or a narrow door. And adding rooms to the ends of passages exacerbates the problem by creating even more spots where gaps will appear in the walls, or walls will stick out in odd places.

I think I like the idea of half-floor tiles better than 5' wide passages. Half-floors have a lot of extra utility in terms of stacking and building raised platforms and whatnot.
