Cavern Questions

With 10 sets out on a table it is a impressive cavern but less organic than I wish it was.

Wouldn't some more cake-piece-tiles from the narrow cavern set help you? I find that the shift from 90 degrees corners only to 45 degrees sometimes changes a lot and looks much more organic.

I often use caverns and dungeons on the same table. Dungeons inside caverns, caverns connected to dungeons, dungeons connected to caverns connected to other dungeons. But your right dungeon crawls are the default.

I have 10 sets of caverns and that is a good amount for the table I have if I had more table space I would want more because caverns are awesome, but what I really want is advanced builder cavern pieces, more new sculpts and a couple of entrances. I certainly agree, mainly because with KSI and KSII it was easy to build and destroy to build the next section as the characters moved across the table. KSIII and KSIV were much more diorama type builds where everything is laid out beforehand in all its glory.

And I know I am like this. I still want more KSIII even though I have enough,(Probably Empire+Capital by now) but it does not cover enough of my table, so I want more more more.

With my three sets of caverns plus a good number of add-ons I am very content.

In my experience, I think the average amount of "base" sets in KS1 and KS2 to get a decent amount of table coverage was 3-4 sets with 3-4 add-ons in order to get a large variety of builds.

In KS3, it was a different ballgame, because it seemed it was all about the add-ons. I found that I ran out of roofs and doors very quickly, even if I wasn't interested in sewers and streets and could focus solely on the buildings.

Interesting! I had a similar story as the original post: During KS5 I remembered my childhood and what I couldn't afford, back then. So I bought in with a bigger and bigger amount (ending with WAY TOO MUCH ). and I am so much looking forward to playing with those tiles. But ... they will not be with me before April 2018. Therefore I couldn't sleep anymore during the nights and had to get at least a glimpse of what DF is, before. Fortunately (me being located in EU) dwarvenforge.eu offered a lot of Cavern pieces without to much shipping/taxes/etc. I had to decide and I had some quite similar thoughts to those that were posted in this threat. E.g: Two cavern basic sets, one extra floor set, one wicked set, one narrow passages set, some mushrooms and some ledges.
And I must say, as others said before, I am quite happy with the ledges, because I really hope that they work well with the terrain trays from KS5 and that I maybe do not need the cavern river stuff. But I did not use them so much for my dungeons so far. Same goes for the floor tiles, and there it is simple mathematics: With two basic sets you do not have enough walls to build them around all floor tiles in the floor set. So this was not a clever buy, I would say.
What I used a lot is the walls with holes that lead to a little burrows-like tile from the wicked set and of course the snake-eye entrance. And the secret-door-door. (I GMed an adventure at a German RPG-Convention this weekend -- with the caverns, and everybody was sooo impressed by the secret door )
Since this all wasn't the right proportions I decided to buy another basic set, some stalagmites, another narrow passages set and some elevation. Now It works perfectly for me. I can build an interesting dungeon with this for D&D -- or a big cave with some interesting features for Otherword Fantasy Skirmish. So now I am quite pleased.
"Quite" pleased. But still I think, one more basic elevation pack and a few more elevation blocks extra would do well in my builds. And of course: Getting the KS5 stuff soon. AAAARGH!
