A smaller total price to get a little of everything... Instead of $3500 painted, make it more like $2000 max.

Some of us want a little of everything, but don't need a crapload of anything.

The "dungeon of doom lite" could of and should have been done where it only included enough walls, corners, and floors to set up one or two encounters at a time. This would have reduced the overall cost significantly BUT still would have made it a hell of a set.

You could have a "Cavern of Doom" which includes all the specialty pieces and enough walls, corners, doors, and floors to build all of the encounters 1 or 2 (or even 3) at a time. Then add a "Cavern of Doom - Floor/Wall/Corner/Door add-on" that contains enough doors, walls, etc to set up ALL of the encounters at the same time for those that truly want that capacity.

I know that DF made better money and could produce things a little more safely by forcing some of the people like me to buy a Dungeon of Doom... but sometimes it isn't about the bottom dollar. Sometimes (as in now) it is about pleasing your customer base and allowing long-time collectors with thousands of pieces to not be forced to buy another 2000 pieces in order to get 15 pieces that are not available somewhere else.

Thanks for considering my voice DF :)

I think by "no gated" pieces Stormfury may be referring to capstone pieces, or something similar, where it's impossible to get a particular piece without spending a ton of money on a set you don't really want.

Or cavern “box” unit with a removable section in the lid?

I've done something similar to the suggested roof-entrance using a mix of caverns, CBS posts and the larger (4x4, 8x8) floor pieces from erinthor mountains. I think that having more floor options than the KS2 cavern 2x2s makes the biggest difference here since larger, connected floor pieces offer a lot more opportunities for elevation.

Maybe some of the new cavern floors could include an insert like the current dungeon/CBS trap doors or the burrows, where you could place modular inserts to have the floor either be solid or descend to a lower level?

This sounds like a job for Erinthor mountains and cliff pieces on one side, and cavern elevations and stairs on the other.

Strategically placed elevation blocks (don’t forget those negative spaces!) would allow you to put some kind of cover over the underground sections of the set-up. I’m thinking stiff felt (or possibly craft foam sheet) is easy enough to cut to desired shapes, sturdy enough to hold minis and a few terrain features, and cheap enough to experiment with before going all-in.

My biggest suggestion is an upgrade path for backers of the original Caverns campaign. And NO Gated Pieces...

Wow. There's love in those builds! Very imaginative and ingenuative solutions. I respect the commitment it takes to build something of that size and quality.

Dennis and I build this table about 96 or 97. Allen and one of Dennis's army buddies at Dragon Con. The table was hard to store/ move. It was also difficult to reach and move figures.

Image

I learned over the years to leave space for your hands.

Image

Leave space to reach across.

Image

I Also like to keep components modular. The right and left sides are seperate.

Image

The bridge and Great all are also separate.

Image

This brings us to the subject of pillars. Clear plastic rod works best but you can hide wood dowel rod. Put the base for you entrance on something like this flying stand.

Image

I use clear rod for all of my flying stands.

Image

The illusion of height can be created with backdrops. This facade was created with pine bark for my Goblin Town set. The pine bark was cut into risers much like you would do for toy electric trains.

Image

I am going to bring up trees because the principle is the same. You must make them tall enough to reach under and a cross.

I hope some one can find Invincible Overlords table photo :!:
