Although they are painted differently, I think they work well together. The difference is nowhere near as stark as between dungeons and castles or cities, for example. The picture below has (a) some mountain floors and other mountain pieces intermixed with cavern floors and chasm pieces. It also has (b) some dungeon floors next to the city builder crenelations. It's pretty hard to pick out the differences for (a), whereas where (b) appears should be obvious.

I have both prepainted and they are slightly different but I'm picky and find they don't bother me too much. I'd say they are interchangeable.

I am not sure they will match or not myself. I do know that the Mountains are very gray and that the base unpainted color is lighter than the unpainted Caverns color. I painted both of my own to make sure that they matched up. I think they work well together.

It's definitely hard to tell from the photos in the online shop, just because small changes in lighting can make a drastic difference, especially on the brown-grey scale. I thought the mountain pieces were a bit more grey and the cavern pieces are a bit more tan-brown on average, but I do not know for sure. I also paint my own.

Surely, someone out there has a more definitive answer?

I don't know wrt paint jobs (I painted my own), but the size difference is noticeable as you build larger layouts.
