Re: Ruins

I keep a few boxes until I sort out some draw space to store all my DF pieces.

Right this is the last set of Ruin picture sets focusing on the Tower ruin pieces.

So first up I took out the four ruined tower levels and put them together with no Tower floors or extensions.
They are fiddly to setup but can be used for a complete tower and can hold Crenellations without a roof platform.

So I looked at what was the best way to build the complete levels, this time I added Tower floors and extensions.

These two show the Half ruin pieces forming the bottom of the tower level.

These next two show the Quarter ruin pieces forming the bottom of the tower level.

My preference was to have the Half ruin pieces forming the bottom of the tower level.
It should also allow one floor extension to be removed to allow a stair to be added per level.

So then with Tower floors and extensions I built the tower back up and topped it with battlements :)

This tower was sturdy and could be moved without collapsing. Just don't ask how you get in it!

So the point of all this ?
No idea just seemed like a useful experiment :D

I can say that Tower ruins can easily be used as full tower levels, but they are far more sturdy with floors - same for non ruined towers.
They are then solid enough to place battlements on top.

You can see how the individual tower ruin pieces can be used in the castle ruin pictures I posted previously :)

Nice build Rabbit Burner - that is more the type of ruin that i end up adventuring in... well played - clearly i need to give the design a second look

So..... what do you do with the boxes your DF comes in if you are painting them? Inquiring minds want to know.

Personally I keep about 10% to store DF and toss the rest. HAve not painted one yet.
I do keep a percentage to store small pieces in. Labelled, they make using plastic drawers v. map case drawers much faster.

No my ruins were made out of Dwarvenite-C, need a good paintjob to protect them from water.

Anychance you could post closeup pics of the front and back of the ruined tower pieces. Have not painted them yet and would like to see where to paint the cardboard.

Thanks,

I assume that building ruins to for a solid wall was for them to be 'knocked' down by the working Trebuchet.
I am not the biggest fan of this - although I do like you can have a distressed complete wall.

I wish there was more variety including spacers and crenelations/battlements.

Below is a quick build thrown together with some KS3 CBS ruins - no great thought just wanted to see it looked.

Not too shabby - with a little more effort, more CBS ruins, foliage and some non-ruins I think I could make a respectable ruin.

I think designing ruins is always going to be a little bit tricky. I'm not sure why the ruined pieces need to have the ability to reform a solid wall. I'd rather have a bunch of low (1/4-1/3, max 1/2 height) partial walls and a couple different piles of stone rubble.
