Lava Caverns painting scheme

Post by falerion » Sun Sep 10, 2017 5:18 pm

Inspired by the beautiful lava painting scheme from GriffonTamer, I grabbed my remaining cavern tiles and painted them in a very similar dark scheme. I went for large areas of blackish tone to get the basaltic feel. And also to give any character is such cave enough area to step on. The tiles are placed on a preprinted gridless fabric battle mat I got from ebay.

The D&D Magma Brute miniature from the Dungeons of Dread series blends in perfectly.

Here is a step-by-step walk-through using only DF colors:

1) A wet-brushing with Lava Yellow. Only focusing on the floor section and selected wall sections of the pieces.

2) A wet-brushing with Lava Orange of the remaining unpainted wall sections.

5) Black dry-brushing on the whole tile

6) A second dry-brushing with Lava Orange to tune done the yellow a bit more. I guess if the first Lava Orange step is already sufficient one could skip this step, but I had the feel that my tiles were to yellowish. With the additional orange they got a more glow like appearance.

8) Dry-brushing with Base Gray for the ash-like appearance on the uppermost part of the walls, selected raised areas and very ligtly on the floor.

9) As final touch I tripped in some drops of Lava Yellow in the small pools on various tiles.

I'm not yet sure if I should add an additional very light Stone Edge dry-brush to the top part of the walls.
