An important question about modular ships is whether they are intended to be practical gaming accessories or diorama set pieces.

As gaming accessories, I would explore a deck-based design in which one level (deck) is defined by floor pieces, and railings or bulkheads are additional (optional) pieces. Masts could be freestanding pillars instead of slotted posts. Flat coils of rope could be sculpted onto deck tiles.

As diorama set pieces, it’s going to get way more complicated. Wooden ship hulls curve vertically and horizontally, usually at the same time. The bulkhead on an upper deck may angle outward at the bottom, while the bulkhead on a lower deck typically angles outward at the top. There are decks below the waterline/tabletop that will go unrepresented unless they are set up on the side. Full height masts with booms and spars will need serious bracing, and sails present size and shape issues similar to roofs.

All for a DF modular boat :)

But its got to look like a complete boat for us. That's not saying what's being proposed wont, but at the moment cannot envisage anything but a boxy boat of straight lines which is not very boaty.

Perhaps we lack the imagination for this, but boats are all curves with only cross beams being straight and some of the main floors, this is where CBS could be used very effectively. But the hull would need to be highly sculpted to look 'real' or 'boaty' (quickly becoming our word for the week).

Not that DF could not do it, in fact I hope they do, but feels a little like Castles but with more specialised pieces.

We get that a boxy boat would do the job for an RPG where it will be a lot about the internals but we want it to look like a Caravel or Carrack or.....

The boat in the Kickstarter linked had the similar issues for us, it was just boat shaped pieces which resembled a boat, but it was not any kind of boat actually built.

The prow of a boat is a great visual piece, so I would prefer it to be one good piece. As for a boats KS, sounds like a secondary part of a KS to me, maybe outdoors.
I second this. Make the prow and stern 'capstone' pieces that determined the ship width - either three tiles or five tiles. This concept worked well for round towers. In either case, the cargo hold hatches could be the middle tile, as could the mast pieces and lots of the midline rigging attachments.

This would be a hard kickstarter to fund compared to dungeons and caverns. It should probably be expanded out to include all of the needed ship accessories: wheel, coiled ropes, etc, as well as a docks system that integrates with city builder. I'd go further than that, including a shoreline system in a 4x4 footprint that tapers down to a battlemat underneath. If possible, we could do a line of sea caves that taper down to an ocean battlemat. I'd include a coral caverns set.

That's my aquatic adventures DF wishlist. I imagine pirate miniatures that are sculpted to be onboard ships... swinging from rigging, dagger gripped by the teeth.

Still plenty of opportunity to make additional bits like figureheads and naval rams and bowsprits, but keeping the basic pieces as simple and generic as possible is frequently a good way to go.

Why not cut the “prow” (the “masthead” is the highest point on a mast, not part of the hull) into port and starboard diagonal walls with a 2”x1” footprint?

I was also in for the trees. Since I don't have a lot of other trees (and none that I like) I feel like I can put these out all the time -- whether or not there is anything hiding in them. I like the option of having miniatures in the treetops.

That said, if DF were to do a similar design (set of different trees?) I'd get those in a heartbeat.

There was a KS not too long ago for a "modular" type boat. Not quite as modular as Dwarven Forge, but it still looks pretty great.

I backed their trees - for $100 painted i found the boat to be too limited - there are better one piece ships out there for a similar price.

Still hoping for a truly modular boat that could be expanded or contracted as the need arises. Plus all those bits could be repurposed in city layouts.
