My long term dream IS to find a big place for all my activities....but I like Seattle or somewhere near a Beach...If I was going to go for isolation, then it would have to be a private island with a nice beach:)
I lived near a beach in CA for 10 years from 5th grade into college and only went to the beach the first summer, it was boring. I like mountains 1000% more than any beach I've been to, from Costa Rica to Catalina Island. I will admit a beach view at sunset is very nice, but give me the ruggedness of white capped peaks any day and I'm a much happier man.

Spiropolous, move to Seattle (actually, move to the area north of Seattle and close to the mountains). Within an hour from downtown Seattle you can be in the mountains skiing (in winter). Within four hours you can be at:
o-Ocean Beaches
o-N America's only temperate rain forest;
o-High mountains (take your pick - a coastal range (the Olympics); or the northern part of America's backbone (Cascade mountains);
o-Altiplano desert (Eastern Washington);
o-Urban (Seattle, very hip, if that's your thing);
o-State capitol, so you can lobby (90 minutes);
o-Major river deltas (several, take your pick);
o-Islands (the San Juans, and several others);
o-CANADA.

Seattle is not, however, for the weak. Highest non-urban suicide rate in the US (or used to be). There is rain 200 days a year. That's what we tell the Californians so they don't return and Californicate our state. Truth is, it rains for PART of a day 200 times a year. Very little heavy rain...

And Seattle has a big gaming community and a fair manufacturing base. Plus much closer to your Chinese shipping input...as in just drive down to the docks.

And of course, you can watch fishtossing at the market, or get into a bar fight with Norskis in Ballard.

I took a look at it on Google Earth and it's a neat little town. The building/now home is on the corner of School St. and Prospect St. with a another street named Church angling across the junction of the two others. It's just two or three blocks east from the train tracks and highway. Then another two blocks or so west is an inlet to the river which has a bridge over the inlet and main river to the north about a block or two. It seems to have a nice view southwest on a slight hill, over the downtown.

I agree the upkeep and monthly bills would run high, but then the monthly payment would be less than we pay now for about 900 sq. ft. Our house is electrically ancient anyway and not even insulated since the time it was built in 1962. So hey, I would feel right at home, only x13. :D

I also really like that it was a Masonic Temple and it has a ceramics studio in the basement. Perfect!!!

Alas, my wife will never move from this side of the state of Washington, so poop on that idea. ;)

Maintenance costs are probably a killer.

12,000 sq ft and high-ceiling worth of heating in an over 100 year old building?
Electrical and plumbing up to code?

Buy hey, if you want your own manor-castle....

I told my wife about it and she said were not moving to NY.
I think it would be cool, only 5000 residents, nice river running through town.
And a ceramics studio in the basement. What more could you want.
Right?!? My spouse put the brakes on us buying it also :cry: It is PERFECT for a medium sized business or B&B

I keep having an image of the dwarvenaut maniacally playing that organ as he plots our wallets doom. Now Mr. Wallet, let me explain how I will destroy you with my latest invention, the Gorgonite Injection Molding Machine.....
